HMT Prologue

Thud, thud, thud.
The sound of flesh being crushed and split echoed through the darkness. Only after seeing red blood splatter across the man’s cold cheek in small drops did Ji-woo finally let out the breath he had been holding in.
What had once been a face slowly turned mushy, breaking apart as it became soaked in blood. From the end of the hammer clenched in the large hand, blood dripped down in a long trail onto the floor.
“Thought someone was peeping around like a little rat.”
He had to run. But the thought stayed as nothing more than a thought. It was as if invisible cords had tied his body tight, leaving him unable to move a single step.
The smell of blood swept over him from up close. His stomach churned. The man stared down at Ji-woo’s face, now drained of all color.
Strength left his legs. Ji-woo collapsed to the ground, and the man crouched down with him, lowering his upper body. Blood-soaked fingertips brushed against his pale cheek. The warm, sticky liquid left a bright red line across the white skin.
“You’re a real pain in the ass, hoobae.”
It was the smile that always made his heart flutter. Ji-woo didn’t know whether his heart was pounding like crazy from fear or from something else.
The man’s hand lifted again toward the air. As the hammer rushed toward him, Ji-woo finally shut his eyes.
