PD Chapter 16: Blind Date (Part 2)
by RAEWhat could possibly be worse than being slapped awake by a dog’s paw at six on a weekend morning?
It’s getting a call from a completely unfamiliar blind date just when you’ve finally managed to serve the little ancestor breakfast, get him to go potty, and finally drift back to sleep.
Wen Xunchuan looked at the girl across from him, who was desperately trying to keep the conversation going, and tactfully started, “Actually, this blind date was arranged by my parents.”
“I know,” the girl nodded in understanding. “In today’s society, people’s social circles are really closed off. Sometimes you just have to rely on this kind of arrangement to meet someone suitable. I was abroad for several years, and there weren’t many chances…”
Seeing that she misunderstood his meaning, Wen Xunchuan had no choice but to interrupt her, saying plainly, “Sorry, Miss Lin, what I mean is, I’m probably not a suitable partner for you.”
“…Huh?” The girl froze, hesitating for a moment before speaking, “Is there something about me that you find unsatisfactory?”
Wen Xunchuan shook his head, offering a slightly apologetic smile. “No, you’re great. With your personality, looks, and education, I’m sure you’ll find someone much more suitable than me.”
The girl stayed silent for a moment, then suddenly laughed and asked, “Did I just get the ‘good person’ card?”
Wen Xunchuan laughed too, replying sincerely, “It’s the truth.”
The girl relaxed a bit, propping her elbow on the table and resting her face in her hand. She held a stirring stick in her other hand, idly stirring the lemon tea in front of her. Tilting her head, she asked him, “Then can I ask why? After all, I spent quite a bit of time putting on makeup, picking out clothes, and doing my hair. I need a reason to comfort myself, right?”
Wen Xunchuan took a sip of soda, his tone sounding a bit casual. “I’m gay.”
“Hey!” The girl was practically laughing out of exasperation. “No need to use such a lame excuse!”
Wen Xunchuan, with a smile in his eyes, shook his head and pointed at her chopsticks with his chin. “Even if the date didn’t work out, we still have to eat, right? This place has pretty good food. Try it, see if it suits your taste.”
As He Linzhou walked in, this is the scene he saw: two people who had previously seemed awkwardly distant, now chatting like old friends, all smiles and warmth.
Did they hit it off?
He Linzhou frowned, pursing his lips as he strode purposefully toward their table.
“Ah! You’re from No.2 Hospital?” the girl said with delight. “I’ll be joining No.2 Hospital next month too, in the Neurosurgery department.”
“Really? Congratulations.” Wen Xunchuan raised his glass to her. “Looks like we’ll be colleagues. I’ll treat you to the cafeteria sometime. There’s this one stall there that serves dishes like nowhere else in A City.”
The girl clinked glasses with him, intrigued. “Is it really that good?”
“You can’t even imagine how bad it tastes.”
“Hahaha, then I’m definitely not going!”
Look at that face, blooming like a flower—disgusting.
Look at that spring-breeze-in-his-eyes expression—so fake.
He Linzhou snorted coldly and sat down unceremoniously beside Wen Xunchuan. “Where are you two going? Count me in.”
As soon as Wen Xunchuan noticed him, he scooted away as if trying to avoid the plague. But as soon as he put some distance between them, He Linzhou leaned in again.
Wen Xunchuan frowned at He Linzhou, his tone unfriendly. “What are you doing?”
He Linzhou curled his lips into a smirk, casting a half-smiling, half-skeptical look at the girl across from them, and squeezed out a few words, “I was going to ask you—what are you doing?”
The girl looked between the two of them with an assessing gaze. After a moment of hesitation, she asked, “And you are…?”
Wen Xunchuan, not entirely sure why this person had suddenly joined them, replied with a cold expression, “What I’m doing has nothing to do with you.”
“How does it have nothing to do with me?” He Linzhou raised an eyebrow, staring at Wen Xunchuan for a while. Then, out of nowhere, he grabbed Wen Xunchuan’s collar and yanked him forward, sounding like he was almost grinding his teeth as he said, “Hubby, are you really out here going on blind dates behind my back?”
The irritation Wen Xunchuan felt from being dragged forward suddenly evaporated at the sound of this horrifying “hubby,” leaving him frozen in place.
His expression turned even darker as he repeated in a voice laced with disbelief, “Hubby?”
Even if she was dense, the girl understood what was going on at this point and quickly interjected, “Uh, sir, please don’t misunderstand…”
He Linzhou’s eyes were filled with pure arrogance as he looked at Wen Xunchuan.
Just as he was basking in the triumph of saving a young woman from the potential fate of unknowingly marrying a gay man, a stern voice sounded from behind him: “Hubby?”
He Linzhou’s back went ramrod straight. He let go of Wen Xunchuan’s collar and slowly turned around. Looking at the group of people who had just finished dinner nearby, his voice instinctively held a hint of a tremble. “…Dad?”
