Three years ago, Han Mingxiu was twenty-four, had completed his master’s degree a little over a year ago, and was working as an assistant vice president at Yunbang Group Headquarters under his father’s guidance. Meanwhile, Xia Ye had just turned twenty-one and was in his senior year of college.
That day, Han Mingxiu had just returned from a business trip. While his driver was taking him back to the company, they stopped at a red light one street away from the office. There, he noticed Xia Ye walking out of the company-affiliated hospital, looking rather serious. Xia Ye didn’t notice Han Mingxiu’s car and got into a taxi. When Han Mingxiu called him, Xia Ye’s voice was quiet, saying he was at home resting.
Back at the office, Han Mingxiu couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off. He called Han Junzhou, his cousin who was the son of his grand-uncle. Although, strictly speaking, Han Mingxiu was supposed to address him as “Uncle,” the two had grown up playing together and were only four or five years apart. They’d stayed close over the years, with their workplaces nearby.
“Uncle, I need you to check someone for me,” Han Mingxiu said, dropping the usual formalities. His sudden use of “Uncle” took Han Junzhou by surprise. “Whoa, easy there! You gave me chills calling me that all of a sudden.” Han Mingxiu chuckled briefly, trying to find a casual way to explain. “It’s about a good friend of mine. He’s been looking out of sorts lately, but every time I ask, he says he’s fine. Just now, I saw him coming out of the company hospital. Could you help check if he’s alright?” He provided Xia Ye’s nine-digit ID number.
After a short wait, Han Junzhou replied lightly, “The patient’s name is Xia Ye, right? Don’t worry, he’s fine. He’s just… pregnant.”
Pregnant? Han Mingxiu felt as if lightning had struck him. His Omega was actually pregnant.
Han Junzhou continued, “Ah, so he’s a young Omega. I noticed on his record that he came in alone. Why wasn’t his Alpha with him? Pregnancy is tough on Omegas, and he’s already experiencing some early symptoms.”
“What symptoms?” Han Mingxiu asked, still in shock.
“Insomnia, nausea, weight loss, and a lack of appetite…” Han Junzhou read off the report. “But it’s manageable. These are all normal symptoms that don’t require medication. As long as his Alpha is attentive, doesn’t let him overexert himself, and provides some pheromone comfort, he should get through it.”
“Oh, right—an Alpha’s pheromones are crucial. Not only does the Omega find comfort in that familiar scent, but it also benefits the fetus. The fetal gonadal cells are rapidly dividing, which can stimulate the Omega’s body. You know how marked Omegas can only accept their own Alpha’s pheromones. If there’s any other hormone present in the system, even from an undifferentiated fetus…”
This pheromone conflict can make sensitive Omegas feel increasingly uncomfortable, especially as pregnancy progresses. In severe cases, this hormonal imbalance can become intense enough to disrupt the Omega’s body, causing serious discomfort and even putting the pregnancy at risk for weaker Omegas. Therefore, it’s best if the Alpha stays close by throughout the pregnancy.” With a physician’s compassion, Han Junzhou, a specialist in differentiation studies, began his usual lecture to family members on prenatal care.
Han Mingxiu absentmindedly nodded. He remembered his mother once telling him that during her pregnancy with him, his father would come home immediately after work to be with her. There were a few occasions when he had to go on extended business trips, and he’d been incredibly anxious. Luckily, his mother had a strong constitution and was well-cared-for by several housekeepers, allowing her to manage until his father returned.
“Hey, are you even listening? Are you so happy you’re speechless?” Han Junzhou teased, having received no response from Han Mingxiu. “Am I going to be an uncle soon? You’re his Alpha, aren’t you? Congratulations—you’re going to be a father! Do your parents know yet? This is huge! The ninth generation of the Han family line! We should hurry and plan the wedding. Can I be the best man?”
“No, I…” Han Mingxiu’s voice came out stiff and hoarse. “I’m not the father.”
“Ah?” Han Junzhou barely had time to react before the call abruptly ended.
At twenty-four years old, Han Mingxiu stood as Yunbang Group’s eighth-generation heir, the eldest son of his lineage, and the most outstanding Alpha in his clan. He was at the very top of the social hierarchy.
But he had a secret that no one else knew.
Han Mingxiu was infertile.
The Han family’s eldest son of the eighth generation could never make anyone pregnant.
Han Mingxiu sat frozen at his desk.
He had never dared to mark Xia Ye, not just because the Han family tradition dictated that the mark should be given on the wedding night as a solemn vow, but also because he wanted to confess the truth before marking him: the fact that they would never have children. He selfishly hoped that, by the time he revealed this, their love would be so deep that Xia Ye couldn’t bear to leave him, that he could accept this flaw of his.
So he did everything he could to treat him well, willing to give everything to gain Xia Ye’s acceptance. He admitted he was somewhat despicable.
“But why…? Why would you do this to me?”
His young, adorable, innocent, mischievous lover—Xia Ye—had betrayed him.
Han Mingxiu’s face was wet with tears as he looked at the photo frame on his desk, carefully decorated by Xia Ye. In the photo, the two of them were leaning close, smiling happily. Xia Ye had placed a set of matching mugs on his desk, claiming one spot for himself. The painting on the wall was something Xia Ye had chosen when they vacationed on Mula Island last year. He and Xia Ye had shared many joyful moments together, and his office was filled with traces of Xia Ye’s presence.
He stood up, walked to the corner, and picked up a golf club. Gripping it tightly, he raised it high and smashed it down, destroying everything in the vice president’s office.
By then, the workday had ended, but no one in the outer office dared to leave. The furious noise continued for twenty minutes, with the cold, oppressive pheromone filling the entire floor.
Finally, the office fell silent. Ten minutes later, Han Mingxiu walked out, looking calm and composed. He instructed his secretary to arrange for cleanup and left, showing no visible signs of distress aside from a slight weariness.
That night, Han Mingxiu did not go home. And after the third call from Xia Ye, he deleted Xia Ye’s contact and smashed his phone.
