    Chapter 9: Foolish Egotist!

On the other side, the campus queen and king weren’t having the romantic interaction everyone might have imagined. Instead, the atmosphere was uncomfortably tense.

“What do you want from me?” Liang Yuchan couldn’t bear it any longer. When they reached a corner near an empty classroom, she grabbed the strap of Bai Chengyu’s side bag to stop him.

In truth, Bai Chengyu didn’t even know why he had called her out. Seeing her and her friends crowding around Han Junzhou after every class had been irritating him. Acting on impulse, he had dragged the instigator out to confront her.

“Say something,” Liang Yuchan demanded as Bai Chengyu stared silently at her. Internally, she felt a bit smug: Finally, he’s reacting. Let’s see how long he can keep his cool now.

Her little game of playing hard to get was paying off. While her face remained indifferent, she was secretly delighted. The idea had struck her suddenly—getting close to the handsome teacher to provoke Bai Chengyu’s jealousy and awaken a sense of urgency in him. Maybe then he’d stop acting so cold and distant toward her.

“You’re being disgraceful,” Bai Chengyu finally said.

“Disgraceful?” Liang Yuchan instinctively touched her face, only to realize that he wasn’t referring to her appearance.

“It’s not about your looks; it’s your behavior that’s disgraceful,” Bai Chengyu bluntly criticized. “As an Omega, you should have self-control instead of flaunting your pheromones openly in front of Alphas. It’s no longer subtle—it’s blatant.”

Liang Yuchan froze in disbelief at his harsh words, her face turning red from both shame and anger.

“I didn’t—” she started to defend herself, but Bai Chengyu cut her off impatiently.

“Do you know why, as soon as the bell rings, all the Alphas and Omegas leave the classroom except for you and your little group? It’s because everyone else feels uncomfortable. Forcing others to smell your pheromones is unpleasant. Some Alphas even take sedatives to avoid being triggered, while other Omegas, embarrassed by association, leave the room. You say you’re not intentionally releasing your scent, but because of others’ lack of restraint, you’re being lumped in with them. How does that make you feel? Angry? Ashamed to be an Omega?”

Bai Chengyu’s frustration poured out, unfairly directed at Liang Yuchan.

Finally, she snapped. “That’s not true! I’m not ashamed to be an Omega, and neither are the others. You Alphas don’t understand us at all! Some Omegas nearing their cycles can’t fully suppress their hormones, even with medication. It’s not something they can control! Those who leave early aren’t being dramatic—they’re avoiding anything that might throw off their hormonal balance.

“As for the Alphas, their reaction is just prejudice! If an Omega was intentionally releasing an arousing scent, do you think anyone would have time to take a sedative? They’d already be in full heat!” Liang Yuchan’s voice trembled with fury.

“You see a few Omega students surrounding an Alpha teacher and immediately assume they’re seducing him. Why don’t you actually go check? You’d see they’re seriously asking questions about classwork and leaving right after!”

She continued angrily, “Ever since our second gender manifests, Omegas are constantly lectured to behave, to control our pheromones. But what about you Alphas? What are you told to do?”

Even the most basic respect was beyond them. A hint of pheromones, and they lost all control, blaming Omegas for “inappropriate behavior” when they succumbed to their primal urges.

Omegas were always cautious, always careful, but who could be flawless all the time? They tried their best, but had Alphas ever made an effort to understand them? Never! Alphas only carried their arrogant prejudices.

Liang Yuchan, still fuming, continued, “Class President, as an assistant instructor in Secondary Gender Studies, I also have a duty to remind you: I suggest you and your Alpha friends pay attention in class. Take time to understand the genders different from your own—their biological structures, the innate challenges that Omegas face. Then, when you criticize Omegas in the future, maybe you’ll realize just how ignorant you sound.”

She glared at Bai Chengyu one last time, spat out the word “Egotist!” and stormed off. He thought he caught the sound of a choked sob as she muttered under her breath, “…I must have been blind.”

Was it really prejudice? Liang Yuchan’s accusations rang in his mind, muddling everything into a confusing blur. His head throbbed. Bai Chengyu didn’t even know who he resented more—Omegas, Alphas, or himself.

He didn’t want to be an Omega, but he couldn’t be an Alpha either. Trapped in between, he was suffering more than anyone else.

He refused to admit it, but Liang Yuchan was right in some ways. He had never taken the time to understand an Omega’s condition. He had always assumed every uncontrollable moment was a deliberate seduction.

Even now, he believed his judgment wasn’t wrong—at least, he had always managed to maintain control over his own pheromones. He never lost control outside of his heat. And when his heat did come, he locked himself away, refusing to disrupt or provoke anyone unnecessarily.

Thinking this through, Bai Chengyu’s expression grew darker. To him, the so-called “lack of control” was nothing more than an excuse for weak-willed Omegas who couldn’t manage themselves.

He walked to the library with a stormy face, skipping lunch entirely.
