In June, two days after the Dragon Boat Festival, Yue Qi ran into Han Junzhou after substituting a class at A University.
Recently, he had heard that Han Junzhou’s partner, Bai Chengyu, also a student at A University, had been injured in an attack. Yue Qi knew Bai Chengyu; the student had also adopted a kitten from Jasmine. He quickly stopped his old friend to ask about the situation.
Han Junzhou said that the little fish[1] was okay, just some superficial injuries. He was almost fully recovered and would be discharged from the hospital in a couple of days.
Hearing this, Yue Qi felt relieved. The two of them sat on a bench under a tree and chatted for a while. Suddenly, Yue Qi recalled the issue that Su Qing had mentioned, about his “severe congenital gonadal hypoplasia.”
When he had heard Su Qing explain it before, there had been something odd about it. But that strange feeling had passed quickly, and Yue Qi hadn’t been able to catch the problem at that time. He was a neurosurgeon, so he wasn’t as specialized in transgender studies. Han Junzhou, however, was an expert in gender studies, so Yue Qi quickly took the opportunity to ask him about it.
After hearing Yue Qi’s description, Han Junzhou also found it strange.
“You said this case is confirmed to be ‘severe congenital gonadal hypoplasia’?” Han Junzhou asked. “If that’s the case, his gonads should be nonfunctional. Normally, he wouldn’t go into heat.”
“But he really did go into heat that day. I was there, and I could smell his scent. I’m sure it had pheromones in it.” Yue Qi said a bit awkwardly. “I had a reaction.”
“Really?” Han Junzhou looked at Yue Qi in surprise. “You met an Omega who got you all riled up? Should I congratulate you?” Han Junzhou playfully punched Yue Qi on the shoulder.
Yue Qi smiled wryly. “What’s there to congratulate? He’s the owner of the cat café I often visit, and he already has a boyfriend.” He continued, “He’s a good guy, and we get along well. We were both shocked when that happened.”
Yue Qi then asked Han Junzhou, “You said that it took him fifteen years after his differentiation to go into heat. What does that mean? Is it possible that it was misdiagnosed back then and his gonads have recovered now?”
Han Junzhou thought for a moment before replying, “It’s not that the doctor misdiagnosed him, but whether his diagnosis was ‘severe gonadal hypoplasia’ still needs to be confirmed.” He continued, “Mainly, there were no further tests at that time. Based on his clinical presentation, the size of his gonads, and the concentration of neutral hormones in his serum, it did fit the diagnosis. But his recent heat contradicts that.”
Han Junzhou paused, thinking deeply. “Here’s what we can do: ask your friend if he’s willing to come to the hospital for a checkup. Medical technology has advanced a lot over the past fifteen years, so it might be possible to find out the actual cause. That way, we can treat it more accurately. There might even be a chance for treatment.”
“Okay, I’ll ask him.” Yue Qi then asked, “Now that he’s had his first heat, will there be more in the future?”
“That’s not certain. Until we get a detailed examination, I can’t say whether that heat was a sudden occurrence or if his body is beginning a regular cycle.” Han Junzhou thought for a moment and added, “But I suggest he keeps some suppressants on hand. His condition is still unclear. We don’t know what triggered that heat, nor the stability of his gonads. If it happens again out of nowhere, your friend could be in a difficult situation.”
“I understand. Is there anything else to watch out for?” Yue Qi asked.
“Let him choose a low-dose suppressant.” Han Junzhou suggested. “Based on what you’ve told me, I think his gonads are more fragile than the average Omega’s. By the way, you said you were there when he went into heat, and you had a reaction. Was it a strong reaction?” Han Junzhou noticed Yue Qi’s slight embarrassment and quickly clarified, “What I mean is, did you lose control because of his hormones? How did you both handle it? I hope you didn’t…”
“Of course not! What are you thinking?” Yue Qi replied, a bit exasperated. “I didn’t lose control at all. I brought suppressants with me that day, so we both injected ourselves, and within half an hour, everything was fine.”
Han Junzhou furrowed his brow and thought again. “You had a reaction, but didn’t lose control? That could mean either you two aren’t very compatible, or his hormone levels are low. But since you had a reaction, it suggests there’s some level of compatibility. You said it was fine half an hour after the injection? Based on that, I think his hormone levels are low, which is why things calmed down so quickly. We’ll have to see how he does in the next few days. Typically, a heat cycle lasts about seven days. But he has a boyfriend, so that’s not something we need to worry about.”
Han Junzhou then suggested, “Anyway, tell him not to use too high a dose. There are two reliable brands for low-dose suppressants,” he listed, “Let him stock up on a few. If the first dose isn’t enough to suppress his heat, he can take a second shot without exceeding the safe dose for the body. It’s safer that way.”
Yue Qi nodded, feeling a bit uneasy now. He had never been in a relationship with an Omega, so he hadn’t thought about the heat cycle much. Hearing Han Junzhou talk about the duration of the cycle, he began to feel a little restless. Not to mention that Su Qing’s boyfriend was a Beta, and his boyfriend wasn’t even around. How was he handling it during these days?
“Thanks.” Yue Qi bid Han Junzhou farewell, planning to visit the Night Cat Café tonight to check on the cats.
Before going, Yue Qi decided to buy some suppressants first.
In the evening, Yue Qi returned to the café, ordered a pot of lavender-citrus calming tea, and settled into his seat. He opened his notebook, put on his headphones, and cuddled with a cat while watching movies. After finishing one movie and two short films, the café had emptied out.
“Hey, still busy?” Yue Qi casually moved to the counter as usual, watching Su Qing tidy up the tea cups while chatting with him.
“There were quite a few customers today, I didn’t have time to attend to you. Sorry about that.” Su Qing replied, washing the cups while continuing the conversation.
Yue Qi glanced at Da Wang, who was in the kitchen petting a cat and watching a show, and leaned in to quietly ask Su Qing, “By the way, are you okay after that night?”
“Oh, don’t worry, I’m fine now.” Su Qing also glanced at Da Wang and answered in a low voice.
“…” Yue Qi sighed. He was getting somewhat tired of hearing “don’t worry.” He almost developed a psychological aversion to those words. “So… that was the only heat you had? It didn’t last for a few days?”
“No, just that one time, it hasn’t happened again.” Su Qing replied quietly, then asked, “Why are we whispering like this?”
“… You’re the one being secretive.” Yue Qi raised his voice, causing Da Wang to glance outside briefly.
“If it weren’t for worrying about Da Wang hearing us, would I need to do this?” Yue Qi muttered, lowering his voice again.
“Hahaha,” Su Qing laughed, “The kitchen is separated from the outside by glass. As long as you don’t shout like just now, they won’t hear us. Besides, Da Wang knows I’m an Omega.” Seeing Yue Qi’s face darken, Su Qing quickly added, “But he doesn’t know about that night. I haven’t told anyone. Thanks for keeping it a secret for me.”
“I didn’t keep your secret.” Yue Qi shot him a glare, “I went and consulted a doctor for you.”
“Huh?” Su Qing was taken aback. He didn’t expect Yue Qi to actually go ask someone.
“My college classmate is the head of a gender clinic. I mentioned your situation to him.” Yue Qi wasn’t sure if he was being too nosy, so he glanced at Su Qing’s expression as he continued, “He thinks that you didn’t get a full examination back then, and the diagnosis might have been wrong. He suggested you go back to the hospital and get checked again.”
“Really?” Su Qing was still a bit stunned. “Was the initial diagnosis wrong?”
“Yes,” Yue Qi nodded. “Director Han said that if you really had severe gonadal hypoplasia, you shouldn’t be able to go into heat. But your current situation doesn’t match the diagnosis. You still need to go back to the hospital for a detailed checkup to understand what’s really going on with your body. Plus, medical technology has advanced a lot, so there might still be a chance for treatment.” Yue Qi handed Su Qing the paper bag he had placed on the chair earlier. “He also suggested you get some low-dose suppressants, just in case you have another unexpected episode.”
Su Qing took the bag, feeling both thankful and confused. “Why specifically low-dose suppressants? Can’t I just use regular ones?”
“Because you haven’t been checked yet, so you don’t know the current state of your glands, but he judges that they might be more fragile than those of ordinary Omegas. So, he recommended starting with a low-dose suppressant, which is less likely to overstimulate your glands.” Yue Qi took a box of medication from the paper bag and showed it to Su Qing. “I’ve checked it, and this dose is only half of the regular one. If it doesn’t suppress the heat after using it, you can use a second dose within a short time, and the dosage will still be within the acceptable range for the human body, so it’s very safe.”
Just as Su Qing was about to take the medication and thank Yue Qi, a hand suddenly reached out between them, intercepting the medication.
“Doctor Yue, your service is really thorough,” Qin Yang’s mocking voice rang out. “It’s already past midnight, and you’re still giving consultations. Not only are you making house calls, but you’re even giving out medication.” Qin Yang took the box of medicine and brought it closer to his eyes. “Let me see… Omega-specific suppressant.” Qin Yang’s expression immediately turned cold, and he couldn’t even keep up his sarcastic smile. He turned to glance at Su Qing, his tone soft yet filled with contempt. “Having an Alpha deliver suppressant to you? That’s quite the move.”
“Su Qing, your mother wasn’t wrong about you.” With these words from Qin Yang, Su Qing’s face went completely pale.
