by jj.ssasipscoffeeChapter 37: Not Wanting to Become a Scumbag
Su Qing looked at Yue Qi calmly and softly asked, “Why do you feel you have to know?”
Yue Qi was momentarily at a loss for words. “Because… because we’re friends,” he replied, his tone firm, though he was well aware of how guilty he felt.
Hearing this, Su Qing chuckled. His eyes curved slightly, glistening faintly. He looked genuinely happy—or at least, that’s how it appeared.
“Thank you, Dr. Yue, for considering me a friend. I’m truly honored.” Su Qing smiled and said, “You’re a good person, and you’ve done so much for me. I’m sincerely grateful. How about this: I’ll give you a permanent VIP card for the teahouse. From now on, whenever you visit, you’ll get a 20% discount.”
He rummaged through his wallet and pulled out a business card from the teahouse. Casually, he scribbled the letters “VIP” in English on it and signed his name with a flourish.
“I’ll make sure the staff know. When you pay at the counter, they’ll apply the discount.” Su Qing placed the card in both hands and offered it to Yue Qi. But Yue Qi stood there, dazed, and didn’t take it. Left with no other option, Su Qing set the card down on the consultation table.
“Dr. Yue, I really must be going now. My friend is waiting for me.” Su Qing gave him a slight bow, waved, and left the treatment room.
Yue Qi remained standing in the room for a while until a new patient was brought in by the nurse. With a sigh, Yue Qi removed his white coat, tossed it into the laundry bin, picked up the VIP card from the table, and absentmindedly walked back to his office.
Seated at his desk, he tried to recall what he had supposedly forgotten, the thing he needed to come back and retrieve. After a moment of thought, he realized—it was just an excuse.
What he had truly lost… was Su Qing.
Frustrated, he ruffled his hair. Just moments ago, Su Qing had been so polite and composed, clearly suppressing his anger while forcing himself to smile. Yue Qi found it unbearable.
Even if Su Qing had yelled at him, that would have been better.
But Yue Qi knew: what right did Su Qing have to lose his temper at him?
Yue Qi was utterly frustrated, practically on the verge of an explosion. He felt suffocated and needed an outlet. Picking up his phone, he made a call.
“Han Junzhou, come out for a drink,” Yue Qi barked into the receiver.
Heavy breathing came from the other end of the line. “Are you insane? It’s the middle of the day—who drinks at this hour?” Han Junzhou retorted irritably before slamming the phone down.
“…What’s your deal?” Yue Qi muttered under his breath. Then why’d you even answer the call in broad daylight? Shameless.
About twenty minutes later, Han Junzhou called back.
“You’re pathetic. Couldn’t even last twenty minutes?” Yue Qi said venomously.
“From last night until this morning, that just now was the final cooldown stretch,” Han Junzhou replied lazily, satisfaction dripping from his tone like a cat luxuriating in a long stretch. “Going out for drinks is out of the question. It’s Valentine’s Day, and I belong to little fish today. If you’ve got something to say, make it quick. He only gave you ten minutes.”
Yue Qi nearly crushed his phone in anger. He was sure Han Junzhou was getting back at him for the scolding he’d given him the other day. Furious as he was, Yue Qi also knew that Han Junzhou was the only person he could vent to about his frustrations.
With a heavy sigh, Yue Qi finally spoke, his voice low. “Junzhou, I know I was wrong. I shouldn’t have scolded you that day.” Then, amidst Han Junzhou’s confused noises, Yue Qi slowly began recounting the events of that day—how he had seen the death of the Omega in the ER and the profound impact it had left on him.
“I’ve seriously reflected on what you said. You were right. If I lose control with someone else, I’ll end up hurting Su Qing.”
“It’s not that Su Qing doesn’t fulfill me; it’s that I’m afraid I can’t fight against the natural instincts of being an Alpha. I don’t want to be the kind of scumbag who makes promises and then abandons him. I’m terrified that my closeness to him will only end up hurting him. I don’t want to hurt him.”
“So… you’ve decided to keep your distance from him?” Han Junzhou asked.
“Yeah. Didn’t you tell me to do that? So, I did. But then I ran into him again today, and I felt awful. He was so polite, calling me ‘Dr. Yue,’ thanking me, apologizing to me—I couldn’t take it!” Yue Qi said, his voice thick with frustration.
“I like him so much. Everything about him is amazing. Even his restraint and those so-called reserved pheromones—I find them so uniquely attractive. I feel drawn to him, not just physically but emotionally. I want to pin him down, make him mine and mine alone. Junzhou, tell me—when he affects me this much, how could I possibly not find him irresistible?”
“Ugh.” Han Junzhou felt like he was going to die of exasperation. This idiot couldn’t even listen to a full sentence before flying off the handle and then fixating on half-baked conclusions.
“I wasn’t trying to tell you that at all. Forget it. Let me ask you again. Back when we were together, our scents clashed. Did you ever cheat? Emotionally, even? Did you ever think about looking for someone else?”
“Of course not,” Yue Qi answered firmly. “Didn’t I already say I’ve never had anyone else? I didn’t even think about it.”
“Neither did I,” Han Junzhou replied. “But do you realize how many temptations surrounded us back then?”
Yue Qi was confused.
“Let’s not even talk about my side. Let’s focus on you,” Han Junzhou sighed. “Do you remember that time in our sophomore year when the music department hosted a joint event with us? You got drunk and ended up with a head injury.”
Yue Qi nodded instinctively, then quickly remembered Han Junzhou couldn’t see him. “I remember,” he said.
It had been a collaboration between the music and medical departments. At the celebration banquet afterward, many people got drunk. Yue Qi had been completely passed out and woke up later with blood on his forehead, with Han Junzhou by his side taking care of him.
“That injury wasn’t from a fall. You hit yourself with something,” Han Junzhou revealed.
“What? I hit myself? Why would I do that?” Yue Qi was baffled.
Han Junzhou explained, “There was this junior from the music department, the one who always wore her hair in a ponytail. She liked you. Some of her friends tried to help her, so they kept pushing you to drink. Their plan was to get you drunk and bring you both to a hotel room upstairs. They figured that once the two of you were alone and the Omega went into heat, things would naturally progress.”
“I… I had no idea,” Yue Qi said, horrified. “What happened? Did I do something to her?” His voice shook with panic. “I vaguely remember her. She kept following us around during the event. It was so annoying I couldn’t even find a chance to talk to you alone. Wait, didn’t she end up dropping out? Did I cause that?”
On the other end of the line, Han Junzhou shook his head. “No, you didn’t do anything to her,” he reassured. *”After I came back from the restroom and realized you were missing, I started looking for you everywhere. Then I noticed the ponytail junior was also gone. I caught a faint whiff of an Omega’s pheromones in heat and realized something was wrong. When I pressed her friends, Da Zhuang and Xiao Lin almost started a fight. Under pressure, they finally handed over a spare key card to the room.
“When I got there, the Omega was lying on the bed almost completely naked. The scent in the room was so strong that even someone like me, who’s not sensitive to pheromones, could feel stifled.”
“And me? What about me?” Yue Qi asked anxiously.
“You had locked yourself in the bathroom, holding a brass desk lamp. You knocked yourself unconscious with it,” Han Junzhou said.
Yue Qi let out a long breath of relief.
“That Omega didn’t drop out voluntarily. She was expelled,” Han Junzhou continued. *”Her family had some issues, and her upbringing gave her skewed ideas, making her determined to latch onto an Alpha no matter what. After you, she tried to target a senior from the law department. That time, she even drugged him. Luckily, the senior’s friends acted quickly and found them before anything happened.
“The senior was furious and reported everything to the school. There was clear evidence, and while she didn’t face legal charges—mainly because the senior didn’t want to create a huge scandal—her actions were undeniable. The school decided to expel her.”
Yue Qi listened intently, his expression growing serious.
“Look,” Han Junzhou continued, *”that senior from the law department didn’t have an Omega partner, and he was even drugged, but he still resisted.
“And you—back then, when we were in that ambiguous phase—not only were we not in a relationship, but our pheromones were completely incompatible. You were drunk and barely conscious. Yet, even in that state, you chose to knock yourself out rather than lose control.”
“Both you and that senior are Alphas, and neither of you lost control.”
Han Junzhou paused, giving Yue Qi a moment to process his words before continuing: “Yue Qi, back in those reckless days of our early twenties, we were able to resist temptation. Why do you think you can’t do the same now?”
