DMPSA CH 38
by jj.ssasipscoffeeChapter 38: Never Let Go Again
After leaving the emergency treatment room, Su Qing spent a long time wandering around before finally finding the payment counter. By the time he completed the billing process, collected his medication, and walked out to the hospital parking lot, it was already past noon. The sun was warm on his skin, making him drowsy.
He wandered around for a bit but couldn’t spot his car. Left with no choice, he found a shaded pavilion nearby and sat down to rest. Ever since he’d left the treatment room, he had worked hard to maintain a positive mood, keeping a smile plastered on his face. But now, sitting alone, he could no longer hold on, nor did he want to.
The moment he lowered his head, tears fell to the ground.
For two months, he had held it all in, thinking that his fervent feelings would eventually cool with time. He believed that the next time they met, he would be able to greet him properly and part ways with dignity.
But their reunion turned out to be utterly humiliating. He hadn’t even had a chance to appear as the calm and graceful person he’d rehearsed.
Instead, he had been like a drowning dog, chased off by strangers. And the other person? He descended like a hero from the heavens to save him, effortlessly uttering the words: We’re friends.
As if the two months of pain and torment he had endured were nothing but a joke.
Yue Qi really is such a softhearted person. He’s willing to be friends with just any random stray.
But sadly, I don’t want to be his friend. No, that’s not right. I don’t want anything from him anymore. To hell with being friends. Who needs to be friends with him?
“A toad lust*ng after a swan’s meat,”[1] Su Qing thought of this phrase and felt even more aggrieved. I’m not a toad, and I don’t even want to eat swan meat. Please, almighty swan, just leave me alone.
Yue Qi walked out of his office, and as he did, he started running. He couldn’t wait any longer. He wanted to dash straight back to the tea house and back to Su Qing’s side. He wanted to win him back.
Han Junzhou had hung up a while ago, but his words continued to echo in Yue Qi’s mind, over and over again.
“What is an Alpha’s instinct? Is it just wild, savage plundering? But don’t forget, we’re not just creatures driven by animalistic urges; we also have human rationality. That rationality allows us to maintain control even in the most chaotic moments of our consciousness.”
“Those Alphas who claim they can’t control themselves—it’s not that they can’t, it’s that they don’t want to. Indulgence is always more enjoyable than self-discipline, and secret trysts are always more exciting than stable, domestic lives. Those are the ugly facets of human greed, not Alpha instincts. Don’t confuse the two.”
“What I said that day wasn’t to tell you to leave Su Qing. I just wanted you to think it through, to make sure you’re not rushing into a relationship out of a fleeting impulse, only to later use his shortcomings as an excuse for a breakup. That would be too cruel.”
“Su Qing’s genes make him want to sleep under sunlight. He’s always felt that something was wrong with him and has tried to force himself to stay awake during the day and sleep at night. He says he wants to be like a ‘normal’ person. But what even is normal? Su Qing living his life according to his genetic predispositions—that’s normal. He can’t see it for himself, but as a doctor and someone who wants to protect him, how could you not understand this?”
And finally…
“Yue Qi, Su Qing has always been trying to get closer to you.”
Yue Qi was overwhelmed, his thoughts a jumble, but ultimately, he felt a surge of joy. It was as if a gust of wind had swept away the fog before him, revealing his true desires with clarity.
He wanted Su Qing.
And now, he knew he could have him—without hurting him. He could be bold enough to pursue him.
Yue Qi ran out of the emergency room and took a few steps before stopping. Turning back, he noticed Su Qing’s car still parked in the same spot.
“…?” It had been over two hours since Su Qing left the treatment room. Why was his car still here? Could it be that he hadn’t left yet?
Yue Qi circled the parking lot and finally found Su Qing resting in a shaded pavilion on the other side. Approaching slowly, he saw Su Qing leaning against one of the pavilion’s pillars, sound asleep.
“…Su Qing, wake up.” Yue Qi softened his tone as he noticed the faint furrow in Su Qing’s brow, even in sleep. He couldn’t help but call out gently, “Why are you sleeping here?”
He touched Su Qing’s hand to check if it was cold, then removed his own coat and draped it over him.
“Mm…” Su Qing, roused by the voice, was still groggy. Rubbing his eyes, he saw Yue Qi in front of him, holding his hand. A flash of irritation crossed his face.
“What are you doing?” Su Qing grumbled, rudely trying to yank his hand away. Still half-asleep, he had completely forgotten to put on the polished demeanor of an adult. Right now, he was just an annoyed and groggy mess.
“I came to find you—take you home to sleep,” Yue Qi said.
Slap! Su Qing smacked Yue Qi’s hand away, glaring at him in both panic and anger.
“What the hell are you talking about, you p*rvert!?”
“No, no,” Yue Qi quickly realized the ambiguity in his words and chuckled at himself. “I mean I came to take you back to the teahouse so you can rest a bit more.”
“There’s no need. I have to open the shop by two…” Su Qing suddenly remembered that the teahouse had been vandalized today. He couldn’t open it.
Picking up his phone, he prepared to post on the teahouse’s fan page about temporarily suspending operations. But upon checking, he found that Da Wang had already taken care of it. Putting his phone away, Su Qing stood up. “I’m leaving now.”
Yue Qi held onto him and gently pulled him back to his seat. He had also seen the update about the teahouse’s closure. “You don’t have to rush to open the shop this afternoon, right? Can we talk for a bit? There’s something that’s been bothering me lately, and I wanted to share it with you.”
Logically, Su Qing didn’t want to waste time listening to this man ramble. But his Aquarian curiosity got the better of him.[2] Plus, Yue Qi’s grip was firm, leaving him with no choice but to reluctantly sit back down and listen.
Yue Qi told him the story from the emergency room.
“That Omega really died?” Su Qing blinked in shock. “What about the child?” His expression showed genuine surprise.
“I heard that the child’s grandmother and the Alpha are fighting for custody, but we don’t know what happened after that,” Yue Qi replied.
After hearing the story, Su Qing fell silent, his mood dampened. The unexpected loss of such a precious life always left one with a sense of regret and sorrow.
“Don’t blame yourself too much. Not being able to save them isn’t the doctor’s fault,” Su Qing said, unexpectedly offering comfort. He assumed that Yue Qi had been part of the resuscitation team and was feeling guilty about not being able to save the Omega. “If there’s anyone to blame, it’s that car accident and the unfaithful Alpha.”
Yue Qi nodded. “Yes, it’s definitely the Alpha’s fault. He scared me to death.”
As he spoke, Yue Qi boldly reached for Su Qing’s hand again. “He made me think… I might end up like him.”
“Hmm…?” Su Qing was momentarily distracted by Yue Qi’s cryptic words and forgot to shake off the hand of the shameless man in front of him. “Why would you end up like him?”
“Before this happened in the emergency room, Han Junzhou came to talk to me about you—about your reserved marking,” Yue Qi said.
Feeling Su Qing begin to struggle, Yue Qi tightened his grip, firmly holding onto Su Qing’s hand that was on the verge of slipping away. “At the time, I was angry with you. Angry that you didn’t tell me about something so important yourself and had Junzhou explain it instead. I thought you were hinting at breaking up, that you didn’t want to continue with me anymore.”
“I wasn’t!” Su Qing immediately refuted him. However, he quickly realized his reaction was a bit too intense and felt embarrassed. “I… I just wasn’t confident I could explain those medical terms properly. That’s why I asked Director Han to help.”
After some thought, Su Qing looked puzzled. “Did Director Han try to persuade you to break up with me? But he told me he was neutral…”
Could it be that Director Han didn’t actually want him to be with his friend?
“It’s my fault. I didn’t listen carefully to Junzhou’s meaning before I lost my temper and even scolded him,” Yue Qi explained to Su Qing. At the time, Han Junzhou had tried to analyze what might be going on with Su Qing, suggesting that Yue Qi think carefully about whether he could accept it. Unfortunately, Yue Qi had been too quick to judge and ended up taking his frustration out on both Han Junzhou and Su Qing.
“Later, I encountered that Alpha in the emergency room. That’s when it suddenly dawned on me what Junzhou meant. Though that wasn’t really his point, I just… I guess I was scared,” Yue Qi said, looking up at Su Qing. “I saw that regretful Alpha kneeling on the floor and the Omega lying motionless under a white sheet. I couldn’t bear it. I was terrified, terrified that one day, that could be the outcome for us. I feared that I might be the one to harm you.”
At that moment, Su Qing understood. Yue Qi wasn’t keeping his distance to leave himself an escape route, nor was he unwilling to be with him because he thought there might be someone better out there.
He just… didn’t want to see a bad ending happen.
“So, you’ve decided then. You don’t want to start anything with me, right?” Su Qing’s eyes stung. Hearing Yue Qi’s decision so clearly made him realize that it wasn’t because Yue Qi disliked him. This made his heart feel a little lighter, but he still couldn’t help feeling sad.
He wanted to tell him that it was someone else’s life, and they didn’t have to end up in such a tragic way. But right now, he was the one with flaws, and he couldn’t bring himself to say it.
“I understand. Thank you for telling me,” Su Qing took a deep breath and slowly exhaled. Though the outcome was regrettable, it couldn’t be helped. He tried to give Yue Qi a sincere smile. “I hope you’ll meet someone great in the future.”
“I already have. I’ve already met him.” Yue Qi covered both of Su Qing’s hands with his, his voice full of joy and delight.
So soon? Su Qing’s mood hadn’t yet turned gloomy when he heard Yue Qi’s cheerful voice. “You’re the one. You’re the great person.”
“I’ve met you, and I’ll never let you go again.”

Footnotes:
- “A toad lust*ng after a swan’s meat,”: The phrase "A toad lust*ng after a swan's meat" (欲求不满的癞蛤蟆想吃天鹅肉) is a Chinese metaphor used to describe someone desiring something unattainable or beyond their reach, often implying that the person is unworthy or unrealistic in their desires. In this context, Su Qing reflects on the metaphor but quickly rejects it, indicating his frustration with being compared to something so unrealistic. He humorously clarifies that he's neither a toad nor interested in the metaphorical "swan meat," signaling that he doesn't want to be seen as someone with impossible or foolish desires. This moment highlights his internal conflict and resistance to feeling unworthy of his feelings. ↑
- But his Aquarian curiosity got the better of him.: is a reference to the traits commonly associated with the zodiac sign Aquarius. Aquarians are often stereotyped as being highly curious, open-minded, and inclined to seek out knowledge or understand things that intrigue them. In this context, it means that despite any reservations or self-control, Su Qing's inherent curiosity, which is linked to his Aquarius personality, led him to give in to the urge to explore or find out more about something that caught his attention. Essentially, his natural curiosity overwhelmed any hesitation he might have had. ↑
