    “Is that funny to you?”

Fu Duqiu’s voice came from above his head — calm, unhurried, and yet it made Duan Wei shudder for no reason at all.

No matter how you looked at it, he was just an Omega. In every way, he was outmatched by Fu Duqiu, a top-tier Alpha. And now, with his back to the man and his strength blocked off, he was completely at a disadvantage.

He struggled for a bit but soon realized it was useless. A true man knows when to yield, so he muttered, voice muffled, “I was wrong.”

Fu Duqiu paused for a moment. Seeing Duan Wei’s ears gradually turn red, he finally got off him and pulled him to his feet. “Still dare to do that next time?”

Before the words even finished leaving his mouth, Duan Wei didn’t respond. His head was lowered, eyes downcast, looking a little pitiful. Seeing that, Fu Duqiu frowned — maybe he’d gone too far just now? He was about to say something when Duan Wei’s hand suddenly shot out, and the next thing he felt was a cold, sharp chill slipping under his collar.

Duan Wei had secretly balled up a snowball while he was pinned to the ground. Now, grinning shamelessly, he pressed it to the back of Fu Duqiu’s neck. “Hahaha! You still dare next time?”

This time he’d learned his lesson — the moment he struck, he bolted straight for the hotel entrance, leaving Fu Duqiu nothing but a retreating back.

Watching him run off, Fu Duqiu stood there for a moment, then shook his head with a quiet laugh.

Snow had started to fall again. Because of the weather, some of the winter camp activities had to be canceled. But the teacher, Lao Qin, couldn’t just let them run wild like yesterday, so he gathered Class Eight and took them to visit a nearby city museum.

The group was split into two teams, each led by a tour guide, moving through the exhibition halls. Duan Wei, thoroughly bored, trailed at the back with his hands clasped behind him, looking half lost in thought.

“What everyone’s seeing here,” the tour guide said through a small microphone, pointing to a display case, “is a model of the first suppressant ever developed by humans, several hundred years ago.”

Unlike the modern injectors, it was a simple, rather crude-looking tube. Because of the angle, they couldn’t see clearly what was inside. A few students leaned in curiously. “How was this used?” someone asked.

“It was taken orally,” the guide replied, smiling. “But its effect was much weaker than today’s suppressants — it only worked for about six hours.”

One student exclaimed, “But heat lasts for like three or four days! You’d have to drink it constantly?”

“That’s right,” the guide said with a laugh. “That’s why back then, when suppression wasn’t very effective, global population kept rising.”

Duan Wei barely absorbed a word of the exchange — he was too distracted. He turned to Xu Jiarian beside him and whispered, shocked, “Three or four days? That long?”

“Yeah,” Xu Jiarian said matter-of-factly. “Some even last five or six days. Why?”

    “N–nothing,” Duan Wei muttered.

As they walked, he silently calculated how many suppressants he had left. He’d already used a few extra doses this week just in case his heat came early — now his supply was running low. And this place was remote; there wasn’t a hospital for miles.

After the talk about suppressants, the guide seemed to have really gotten into the groove and started explaining more about AO biology. “Omegas are extremely fragile,” he said. “In their lifetime, they can only be permanently marked twice. And if their health isn’t good, removing a bond can even be life-threatening. So please, everyone — choose carefully. Don’t get marked lightly.”

The guide was a Beta, probably in his twenties, but spoke like a seasoned counselor, more earnest than any health teacher.

Duan Wei gave him a quick glance, eyes catching on the name badge pinned to his chest — he could only make out one character: “Fan.”

Beside him, Peng Yan snickered quietly and leaned close. “Hear that, Duan-ge? Better keep your eyes open.”

“Open your damn eyes,” Duan Wei shot back, rolling his eyes. “I’d rather live my whole life hugging a box of suppressants than let anyone mark me.”

Standing a few paces behind them, Fu Duqiu heard every word. The two had lowered their voices on purpose, but the museum was so quiet that their whispers carried easily.

His gaze lingered briefly on the ends of Duan Wei’s slightly tousled hair before he looked away.

A few minutes later, the group reached what everyone had been most excited about since they’d left — the pheromone compatibility test.

It was a newly developed attraction: a machine that could analyze two people’s pheromones and calculate their compatibility, supposedly determining whether they were “ideal partners.”

The results weren’t always accurate, but rumor had it that some couples had found their destined match thanks to it — which made plenty of people line up just to try their luck.

Duan Wei stood on the edge of the crowd, listening to the guide’s enthusiastic explanation, and came to one simple conclusion.

He had to make the male and female leads take the test.

He remembered that when he read the novel before, the author had mentioned that the male and female leads had a pheromone compatibility rate of 89%, which, in that world, was the highest possible match.

Now that there was a real machine to test it, it would practically be a crime not to take advantage of the chance.

With that thought, his previously dull mood suddenly reignited. He grabbed Xu Jianian’s hand and walked ahead with renewed excitement.

“You wanna do that one?” Xu Jianian asked curiously.

Duan Wei glanced behind him at Fu Duqiu and replied, “I want you to do it.”

“Huh? How can I do it alone?” Xu Jianian didn’t get it. “You mean… with you? But we’ll overlap in the system!”

At that, Duan Wei frowned, pulling her along. Then he realized that dragging someone into a two-person compatibility test would look… weird. It might not even work the way he imagined.

After thinking for a bit, he turned to Peng Yan beside him and said, “This looks fun. Let’s do it together.”

Peng Yan looked at him like he’d grown a second head. “Now you’re all fired up? Where was this enthusiasm earlier?”

“Shut up!” Duan Wei cut him off, then looked toward Fu Duqiu, who stood not far away. “Wanna join?”

With three people, it wouldn’t look so awkward compared to a one-on-one test. Duan Wei figured Fu Duqiu wouldn’t refuse.

Sure enough, after a moment’s thought, Fu Duqiu nodded. “Alright.”

The four of them went inside. The pheromone compatibility lab looked completely different from the other exhibition rooms they’d passed earlier—it resembled more of a futuristic research facility, filled with a strange mix of colors and high-tech design.

The moment Duan Wei stepped in, his eyes were darting everywhere. He looked, touched, and finally sat down, completely captivated.

A lab-coated Alpha greeted them with a warm smile. “Welcome,” he said, registering their basic info before taking out four test tubes that looked like vials. “Just extract your pheromone samples and we’ll take care of the rest.”

“Oh, okay.” Duan Wei nodded calmly, but once he stepped into a private restroom stall, he froze.

He’d only just learned how to control his pheromones recently. Extract them? He could barely even retract them without needing several minutes to focus.

Forget it. He wasn’t here for his own pairing result anyway.

He was about to walk out with the empty vial when there was a knock knock on the door. Fu Duqiu’s voice came from outside:

“Do you know how to extract pheromones?”

    Duan Wei paused. “…No.”

As if expecting that, Fu Duqiu’s voice remained calm. “Open the door. I’ll help you.”

    “…Oh.”

Though reluctant, Duan Wei still obeyed. When he opened the door, he saw Fu Duqiu standing there holding a transparent test tube. “You’re done already?”

“Mm.” Fu Duqiu handed him the tube, stepped into the stall, and locked the door behind them. “Hold this for me.”

Duan Wei obediently took the test tube and stood against the door. The cap was tightly sealed, but he could still catch a faint trace of white pine—clear and cool, exactly like Fu Duqiu himself.

When Duan Wei froze up, Fu Duqiu took the vial back from his hand and said in a low voice, “Lower your head.”

There was a commanding tone in his voice—one that made Duan Wei think that if Fu Duqiu ever went into management, he’d do brilliantly. Slowly, Duan Wei lowered his head, exposing the back of his neck beneath his jacket.

It was as smooth and unmarked as before—completely untouched, pure as a blank page. Fu Duqiu’s eyes lingered on it for a long while before he finally looked away, recalling what he’d heard earlier—

“Even if I have to rely on suppressants all my life, I’ll never let anyone mark me.”

Fu Duqiu’s gaze flickered slightly before he pressed the cool test tube gently against the back of Duan Wei’s neck.

Instantly, the honey-orange scent burst through the small stall, twining with the white pine until the air was saturated with something both sweet and crisp.

What would their compatibility rate be, he wondered?

The glass felt icy against Duan Wei’s warm skin, making him shiver. He pressed both palms against the door, grimacing. He’d sacrificed enough for the sake of the plot already!!

The process didn’t take long. Fu Duqiu sealed the sample and handed it to Duan Wei before tidying up. They left the restroom together.

By then, Peng Yan and Xu Jianian had long finished and were sitting outside watching videos. When they saw the two of them walk out together from the restroom, their expressions couldn’t have been more different—Xu Jianian looked like she’d just witnessed a ship sail, while Peng Yan looked like someone had stolen his cabbage.

The Alpha doctor, seeing everyone done, carried the four samples into another room for analysis.

The four waited, chatting idly. Everyone seemed indifferent—except Duan Wei, who sat like a devout believer awaiting divine revelation.

Luckily, the results came quickly. The doctor stepped out, eyes wide with disbelief.

“I’ve never seen compatibility this high before…” he said in astonishment.

Duan Wei, fully aware of the script, thought smugly, You just haven’t read enough novels.

The doctor composed himself and began announcing the results:

“Peng Yan and Xu Jianian — compatibility 78%.”

“Fu Duqiu and Xu Jianian — compatibility 89%.”

Peng Yan’s eyes went wide. “Whoa, you two scored high!”

Duan Wei, satisfied, glanced at the pair. But both of them looked utterly expressionless.

What the hell? Weren’t people supposed to be thrilled when they found their destined match?

Then he noticed the doctor still staring at them strangely, and an uneasy thought hit him. “Wait… don’t tell me my match with Peng Yan is also super high?”

“Please spare me, Duan-ge,” Peng Yan groaned, equally disgusted.

The doctor said nothing, merely handed the last two sheets to Peng Yan with a mysterious look.

Duan Wei leaned over curiously to peek—and then muttered in disbelief.

    “Holy sh*t…”

Peng Yan & Duan Wei — compatibility 56%
Fu Duqiu & Duan Wei — compatibility 99%

Looks like little Duan must’ve read a pirated version of the novel.
