DMMY Chapter 5: Wishes
by AbyssSheng Yan was awakened the next day at noon by a call from Gou You.
“Hey, Sheng Ge, are you okay? I heard from Huang Shu Lang that you took a sick leave? How come you suddenly got sick when you were fine? Was it because of Qin Zigui?”
Sheng Yan frowned, feeling uncomfortable as he rolled over. “What sick leave?”
As he spoke, he realized his throat was sore and aching quite badly. When he instinctively reached out to grab his huge cat-shaped pillow, it was nowhere to be found.
Something didn’t feel right.
Sheng Yan slowly opened his eyes and saw the full bookshelf on the opposite wall, along with trophies and certificates, and the minimalist, somewhat cold room decor.
Wasn’t this Qin Zigui’s room?
Sheng Yan was puzzled. Then he saw throat lozenges on the bedside table, and memories slowly resurfaced like a sponge absorbing water, expanding back into shape.
It started with him quarreling with Qin Zigui.
Then it was his birthday dinner at Qin Zigui’s house.
After that, he was informed by Madam Xu that his house had been bombed, and he had to stay at Qin Zigui’s house for a month.
Finally, it ended with him being shocked by the news and choking on a mouthful of fish head with chopped chili, followed by a large glass of white wine.
And all memories ultimately focused on Qin Zigui’s “Woof.”
It was neither reluctant nor mocking, just natural, plain, and unremarkable. It lacked the satisfaction of seeing a sworn enemy embarrassed, but there was also no discomfort at all, as if…
he had been comforted.
But why would Qin Zigui comfort him?
A year ago, that would have been normal, but now, weren’t they estranged?
What kind of trick was this guy playing now?
Sheng Yan stared at the full bookshelf, lost in thought.
On the phone, Gou You said “Hey” a few times, “Hey hey hey? Sheng Ge? Are you still there? Nothing really happened, did it? Damn, don’t scare me.”
“Shut up.” Sheng Yan was brought back to his senses and said irritably, “It’s my birthday, are you being ominous?”
“Pah pah pah, I just knocked on wood. What’s wrong with you, Sheng Ge? Did I do something wrong again?”
“I’m not scolding you.” Sheng Yan couldn’t be bothered to explain. “I saw the skin you sent, thanks. I’ll treat you to dinner later. I’m fine here, I’ll be able to go to class in the afternoon.”
With that, and nothing else to say, Sheng Yan hung up the phone.
He opened Madam Xu’s WeChat profile, and several unread messages were sent at 5 am.
Probably the time Madam Xu left home.
[Mother Goddess]: Got drunk after two shots of white wine, so delicate. Don’t blame me if you become a crybaby in the future.
[Mother Goddess]: Don’t worry, I’ve arranged a sick leave for you. Just stay at home and rest, and go to class after you wake up.
[Mother Goddess]: But Mom didn’t see you before leaving, didn’t get to wish you a happy seventeenth birthday in person, a bit regretful.
[Mother Goddess]: But you have to believe, Mom will always love you, and I don’t have any other greedy requests. I just hope my son can continue to grow up kindly, bravely, happily, and joyfully in the new year.
[Mother Goddess]: I’ll check in with you when I get to London at night. Behave well at Aunt Qin’s, listen to Zigui, don’t make Mom worry.
[Mother Goddess]: Love you.
Sheng Yan lay on the bed, biting his lip, fingers moving quickly: [Mother, rest assured, wear your mask, come back early, stay safe. Our family has enough money. You can go to London and look at British hunks more, and do less work. Your son kneels down in respect.]
After sending it, he tossed his phone aside, intending to lie back down. But as he shifted, his foot hit something hard and uncomfortable. Sitting up, he lifted the covers and found the book “After Getting the Wish Fulfillment System, I Reached the Peak of Life.”
Seeing the title, Sheng Yan vaguely remembered a dream he had had last night. It was probably about a Guanyin telling him that the wish he made on his birthday last year would come true after he woke up.
What a joke.
How would it come true?
Was he going to get a wish fulfillment system too?
But why did he faintly remember dreaming about Qin Zigui as well?
On his big birthday, dreaming such things was ominous.
And why was this guy so stingy, not even sending a perfunctory birthday wish?
Thinking about it, his phone pinged.
Sheng Yan’s eyes lit up as he hastily grabbed his phone, but the excitement dimmed as he read the notification.
It was a banner message from an app: [Happy Birthday to the Young Master Sheng Yan]
Sheng Yan tossed his phone aside apathetically.
Wish Fulfillment app?
What’s that?
When did he download such a thing?
He swiped his finger to unlock the screen, and indeed, there was a logo he had never seen before on the main interface.
With a smoky pink background and a milky-white stroke vertically across it, resembling half a heart drawn by a painter yearning for his lover, the logo was accompanied by four words below: Wish Fulfillment.
He clicked on it to see.
The screen instantly went dark, followed by mechanically typed white text: [Hello, Sheng Yan, congratulations, you have been selected as the current host of the Wish Fulfillment’s app. Click to bind to start the journey of wishes.]
What kind of scam was this that he seemed to have seen before?
Like the one where three lines could make a man spend 180,000 yuan on me?
Curious to see what kind of creative ideas this scam app had, Sheng Yan clicked to bind.
The page popped up: “User Agreement and Usage Notice of the App”
1. This app must strictly maintain confidentiality with the user, meaning neither the app nor the user may disclose any specific usage content about the app to third parties.
2. During usage, users must not make any wish requests that violate the laws and regulations of the People’s Republic of China or public order and good customs. They must not forcefully and rudely bind others’ emotions, or harm others or seek undue benefits for themselves.
3. To comply with the law of conservation of energy, any wish must be accompanied by the completion of corresponding tasks by the user. However, users must not demand any payment of money. Likewise, after making a wish, users must not refuse to fulfill their obligation to complete tasks (task scope, see clause 2).
4. The ultimate interpretation of the app belongs to the app developer. Thank you for using it.
The developers of this thing seemed quite law-abiding.
Scammers nowadays are getting more and more sophisticated.
Although he didn’t quite understand, Sheng Yan was greatly impressed.
He continued to click “Read and Agree.”
The screen changed again.
This time, it wasn’t a simple and rude interface switch, but a gradually rendered animation.
A chubby little angel with short wings, clutching a wounded kitten, stumbled and fell from the moon, landing on a thick, soft grassy ground. It hurt so much that tears welled up, but the angel still held the kitten tightly, bravely getting up.
Then, looking up at the sky, he surveyed the desolate and dilapidated garden, uttering a puzzled “Huh?”
The screen froze, and text appeared.
[Every child chosen by the main god is an angel who has saved other souls. To reward these angels, the main god decides to fulfill their wishes. Click to confirm and accept the main god’s reward.]
Confirm.
[Everything in the human world must undergo trials, and everything in the world has its causes and effects. At different stages, different levels of wishes can be made, and different tasks need to be completed. Click to scan the host to confirm the current level.]
Scan.
[The current wish level of the host is Lv.1. Available wish level: beginner. Task difficulty: easy. Frequency: twice a week (refresh on Wednesdays). Upgrade requirement: complete ten beginner tasks, fulfill ten beginner wishes to advance to Lv.2. Scan complete, click Next to enter the wish tutorial.]
Next.
[Wish Tutorial: Step One, receive ten daisy seeds; Step Two, place wishes in the garden mailbox. If approved, you will receive one flowerpot; Step Three, plant the seeds in the flowerpot, and you will receive a task letter; Step Four, click to complete the task and wait for review; Step Five, after the review is completed, wait for the wish to be fulfilled, and the daisies will bloom.]
It sounded quite artistic and romantic.
Sheng Yan became more interested in this scam app, so he actually clicked to receive the daisy seeds.
As a result, in addition to the seeds, three potted daisies appeared on the screen, accompanied by a letter: [The system detected that the host currently has a trust level of 0, so in order to increase the host’s trust, the system decides to give three pre-opened daisies for trial use. Three beginner wishes can be fulfilled without tasks to establish trust between the host and the system, please accept.]
Trial use as well?
Sheng Yan felt that this was probably a common scam tactic in malls where they first let you win a prize for a free trial experience, then gradually guide you into making other purchases.
The shell was fancy, but the core remained the same.
Trying to scam him like this?
Impossible.
Sheng Yan felt quite clever.
He casually made a wish: [I want sweet and sour pork ribs for lunch.]
The screen displayed a white circle spinning.
Five seconds later: Wish approved.
Ten seconds later, Qin Ru’s voice came from the kitchen: “Auntie, Zigui is coming back for lunch. Can I make another dish of sweet and sour pork ribs? Is that okay?”
The cooking aunt responded readily: “Sure, no problem, it’ll be ready in ten minutes!”
Sheng Yan, who had been casually poking at the screen, suddenly paused: “?”
Was this a coincidence?
It must be a coincidence, right?
No, let’s try again.
Sheng Yan typed quickly with both hands: [I hope I can know the winning numbers for the next lottery jackpot in advance.]
The white circle spun again.
Three seconds later: Wish rejected.
This wish got rejected?
Stingy, can’t even handle this.
Sheng Yan sneered disdainfully and then, thinking about what non-rejected wish he should make, he heard someone entering the room outside and Qin Zigui’s clear, low voice: “Auntie, I’m back.”
Suddenly, an idea came to Sheng Yan: [I wish for Qin Zigui to immediately trip and fall.]
The white circle spun again.
Five seconds later: Wish approved.
At the same moment these four words appeared, a loud crash accompanied by Qin Ru and the cooking aunt’s panicked voices abruptly sounded in the living room: “Zigui, how did you fall? Be careful, does it hurt? Did you hit or bump anything?”
“It’s okay, I just slipped accidentally.”
Qin Zigui remained as calm as ever.
It was Sheng Yan, the instigator in the room, who was not calm.
Sheng Yan tightly pressed his lips together and quickly typed again: “[I wish that Qin Zigui chokes on cold water].”
“Cough, cough, cough…”
Qin Zi Gui’s unexpected coughing and the sound of the glass hitting the coffee table heavily rang out as expected.
Sheng Yan: “…”
Stupid.
Suddenly, he seemed to remember something. He sat up abruptly, grabbed the thick yellow book, and started flipping through it.
Being suppressed everywhere as a mediocre student.
Getting drunk on his birthday.
Receiving a wish system called Wish Fulfillment app.
And then starting to punch the academic overachievers and kick the student council president…
Damn?!
Did the novel come to life?!
Did his wish for Wish Fulfillment’s on his birthday last year also come true?!
Was it a scam app?
This world couldn’t be that magical, right?
Sheng Yan’s brain, still foggy from last night’s alcohol, was stunned.
Then the prompt message popped up on his phone again: [Three trial uses have been used up. The task cycle will be officially refreshed on Wednesday. Please be present to experience it, Master.]
Today, July 7th, Tuesday, meant that tomorrow he could start doing tasks and making wishes for real.
Sheng Yan bit his lip and tapped the screen with his fingertip. After a brief thought, he decided not to uninstall it for now. He would wait and see what tasks the app would assign him.
If it was some task about making money, selling personal privacy, or breaking the law, he would report it straight away and let the police teach these scammers a lesson.
But if it was a normal task, and the wishes were still coming true…
Thinking about himself being the top student in the class, the shooting champion, stepping on Qin Xiao Gou, punching Qin Da Mao, instructing Huang Shu Liang to criticize Qin Zigui every day, and ordering Qin Zigui to write a 5,000-word self-criticism every day, Sheng Yan couldn’t help but burst into laughter.
“What are you laughing at?”
Sheng Yan, happily imagining Qin Zigui pitifully pulling his sleeve and calling him brother, suddenly heard a cold, crisp sound coming from the door. With a reflex, he sprang up from the bed and sternly said, “How come you don’t knock before entering someone else’s room!”
Qin Zigui leaned against the door frame, arms crossed, scanning the little master wearing his pajamas and stepping on his quilt in his own room, menacingly saying, “This is my room.”
“…” Sheng Yan, realizing the problem, stiffened slightly, then reluctantly climbed down from the bed and said, “It’s not like I don’t have a room or pajamas. You let me stay here.”
“Yes, You asked for it.” Qin Zigui nodded, “You said my pajamas smell good, the room is big, the bed is soft, and it’s close to the bathroom, so you refused to leave.”
Sheng Yan: “…”
Qin Zigui: “Do you need me to call Auntie to confirm?”
Sheng Yan: “Hmmph!”
Feeling that staying here for another second was unlucky, Sheng Yan, with a grimace, picked up the thick yellow book and his phone, grabbed his backpack, lifted his head proudly, and walked past Qin Zigui without looking at him, intending to return to his own room in a dignified manner.
However, as soon as he stepped out of the room, Qin Zigui reached out and grabbed the back of his pajamas, pulling him back.
Sheng Yan slapped his hand away angrily, “What are you doing!”
Qin Zigui didn’t answer, just bent down to pick up a slipper from beside the door, then another one from under the table, and placed them in front of Sheng Yan, “Put them on.”
Sheng Yan reluctantly slipped on the slippers, grumbling, “You’re such a mother hen.”
Qin Zigui didn’t deny it, “If I weren’t a mother hen, you would have spent last night stinking in the bathroom.”
“…”
Damn it!
Feeling trapped and unable to argue with Qin Zigui for now, Sheng Yan angrily glared at him, then stormed back to his room opposite, slammed the door shut, threw his backpack down, and was about to take out his specially customized “dartboard for annoying Qin Zigui” from his pocket when his phone buzzed.
He took it out and saw: [Wish Fulfillment APP: Detected that the host’s current trust level is thirty percent, and since it’s the host’s birthday today, the system has decided to temporarily grant one beginner wish, valid until midnight on July 8, 2020.]
Was there such a good thing?
Sheng Yan’s attitude towards this app was a mixture of belief and disbelief, but upon seeing this message, he had a sudden inspiration and typed directly: [I wish for Qin Zigui to obediently be my Xiaodi (little brother) today.]
Wish approved.
Then he opened the door, shouted loudly to Qin Zigui, who was tidying up the table in the opposite room, “Qin Zigui! Come here!”
Qin Zigui stopped what he was doing, walked to the door of the opposite room, leaned against the door frame, and looked at him with lowered eyes, “What’s up?”
So arrogant.
Sheng Yan snorted coldly, “Call me Gege.”
Qin Zigui raised an eyebrow slightly, his expression not particularly friendly.
He naturally had a somewhat cold and unapproachable appearance, and at this moment, with his eyebrows slightly raised and looking down from a higher vantage point, he seemed especially unapproachable.
Sheng Yan, on the other hand, was never afraid of him.
But…
Could that wish app really be a scam?
As Sheng Yan was thinking, he heard a cool “Gege” above his head.
“?”
Sheng Yan looked up.
Qin Zigui frowned slightly, looking very reluctant, but it seemed as if he was being forced by some invisible force to speak. His throat rolled, his lips parted slightly, and he reluctantly uttered the two words again, “Gege.”
At that moment, the sky cleared, the rain stopped, and Sheng Yan felt like he had succeeded again.
He tilted his face upwards, his eyebrows and eyes relaxed, and he smiled proudly, revealing a confident smile of a young man, “Hey, good didi.”
Abyss : “Xiaodi” is like calling someone “little brother,” “gege” is like saying “big brother,” and “didi” is like “little brother,” but even younger and cuter.
