Chapter 17: We Broke Up Long Ago

Da Wang followed closely behind Qin Yang as they headed upstairs.

“Why are you following me?” Qin Yang asked angrily.

Da Wang pulled out his phone, opened a photo, and turned the screen toward Qin Yang. “I should be the one asking you—what exactly are you doing?”

The photo showed Qin Yang embracing another man. The man had an arm wrapped around Qin Yang’s waist, while Qin Yang leaned against his chest, gazing at him with a bright and innocent smile.

Seeing his own photo, Qin Yang flushed with embarrassment and fury. “You’ve been following me?”

“I wasn’t following you. I just happened to pass by and saw you that day,” Da Wang replied, lowering the phone. “Qin Yang, the situation between you and Su Qing is none of my business, but I can’t help but meddle and remind you—Su Qing doesn’t owe you anything. He just didn’t fall in love with you.”

Da Wang looked Qin Yang in the eye. “And as for you, you don’t truly love him, either.”

“The only person you love is yourself.”

“You don’t know anything,” Qin Yang shouted at Da Wang.

Da Wang nodded. “Maybe I don’t. I’ve never been in love, so I probably don’t understand. But I do know that when I like someone, I want them to be happy.”

Da Wang stared intently at Qin Yang. “Once, I genuinely wished for your happiness.”

Qin Yang stared back in astonishment, hearing Da Wang’s voice laden with disappointment. “Now, I just hope you take care of yourself.”

“You can continue being an ungrateful wolf, but don’t expect to always come across someone as good as Su Qing.”

After finishing his piece, Da Wang deleted the photo in front of Qin Yang and turned to head downstairs.

When Qin Yang came downstairs, the three others were still there waiting for him. However, they were all sitting far apart, each holding a cat and petting it, with no one speaking.

Dragging a suitcase behind him, Qin Yang stopped in front of Su Qing at the bar counter.

“The stuff in the room upstairs—I don’t need it anymore. You can deal with it however you like, and I’ll cover the costs. Also, I’m returning this.”

Qin Yang placed the watch Su Qing had gifted him on the counter. “We broke up long ago. There’s no point in me keeping this anymore.”

It seemed Qin Yang was deliberately making a point for Da Wang to hear, trying to prove that the photo of him wasn’t evidence of cheating.

As expected, both Yue Qi and Da Wang glanced at the two of them in confusion. Neither of them had heard Su Qing mention a breakup before. How had it suddenly become “we broke up long ago” in Qin Yang’s version?

Da Wang’s mind quickly pieced together Qin Yang’s intention. Even now, Qin Yang was still concerned about winning or losing. Da Wang let out a sigh.

Su Qing didn’t seem particularly bothered by Qin Yang’s “breakup declaration.” Instead, he simply stared at the watch, filled with sorrow.

He recalled how, just a year ago, Qin Yang had eagerly shown him a picture on his phone, saying he wanted this watch, his eyes brimming with excitement and anticipation. Now, it was being discarded like it meant nothing.

“Keep it,” Su Qing said hoarsely. “After all, it’s a memento. The watch even has your initials engraved on it.”

Qin Yang chuckled as he picked up the watch, glanced at the back of the dial, and said, “Q.Y. Hey, Yue Qi, catch.”

He tossed the watch to Yue Qi and then said to Su Qing, “Turn the initials around—it’s Y.Q., perfect for him. He probably won’t mind taking something I’ve used.”

Turning to Yue Qi with a taunting look, Qin Yang added, “Right, Y.Q.?”

Da Wang suddenly stood up with a jolt, startling the cat in his arms, which meowed and jumped to the ground. Clenching his fists, Da Wang took a step forward, as though ready to punch someone. However, Yue Qi held him back by the arm, stopping him from acting impulsively.

Yue Qi carefully placed the watch on the table and asked Da Wang, “Isn’t this watch beautiful? Don’t you think it suits me?”

“…It’s beautiful,” Da Wang replied through gritted teeth. “It suits you perfectly.”

“I think so too,” Yue Qi said calmly. “Someone who once owned it didn’t know how to cherish it, so now I’ll be the one to treasure it.”

He took off the watch he was wearing on his left wrist and carefully put on the one engraved with “Q.Y.”

Qin Yang hadn’t expected Yue Qi to so calmly and openly wear the watch in front of everyone. Just as he was about to throw another sarcastic remark, Su Qing, who had been sitting quietly with his eyes closed, finally opened them.

“Qin Yang,” Su Qing said, his eyes red but his gaze clear and resolute. His voice was calm and steady as he spoke, “I won’t take this back.”

He took out the check Qin Yang had given him earlier and tore it in half right before Qin Yang’s eyes.

“These past seven years, thank you for your companionship. We owe each other nothing now. I wish you great success and a bright future ahead.”

“I’m closing up for the night. All of you, go home. Da Wang, remember to lock the door.”

Su Qing walked out from behind the bar counter, avoiding everyone’s gaze, and went straight upstairs.
