As soon as Su Qing stepped out of the consultation room, Yue Qi approached him.
“How come you were inside for so long?” Yue Qi asked, his expression full of concern. “Is everything okay with your body?”
Su Qing smiled and shook his head. “Everything’s fine. Director Han said my glands are normal, and everything has fully developed now.”
“I told you there was nothing to worry about,” Yue Qi said, feeling relieved, but with a trace of suspicion. “But if everything’s fine, why did it take so long in there?”
“I also asked Director Han about some sleep issues, and he prescribed me some medication,” Su Qing waved the prescription slip in his hand, changing the topic. “Come on, let’s go get the medication and then have some late-night snacks.” He took Yue Qi’s hand and headed toward the counter.
Since Su Qing said everything was fine and seemed so calm and confident, Yue Qi believed him. His previous worries while sitting outside the consultation room, as well as his immoral thought of trying to secretly gather information from Han Junzhou, all faded with Su Qing’s cheerful expression.
So, when Yue Qi was caught by Han Junzhou on the A University campus and invited to dinner, he was a little confused.
“Junzhou, what are you doing here?” Yue Qi, just out of class, ran into Han Junzhou at the classroom door and greeted him cheerfully. “Are you here to pick up Bai Chengyu [1]from class?”
“I’m here to find you,” Han Junzhou said. “Do you have time tonight? Let’s grab dinner together.”
“Sure! I was just about to head to Su Qing’s teahouse; we can go there for dinner. You can also take a look at Jasmine and little Taxue, the mother and brother of your little cat… they’re staying with Su Qing now,” Yue Qi said excitedly, pulling Han Junzhou along.
“Wait a minute. I’m craving the potato stew at that Japanese restaurant near the school. It’s been a while since we’ve been there, right? Let’s go there tonight,” Han Junzhou said.
Yue Qi suddenly felt that something might be wrong and anxiously followed Han Junzhou into the restaurant.
After they had ordered their meals, Yue Qi could no longer hold it in. “Spill it. What’s going on?” He hesitated for a moment before asking, “Is it about Su Qing?”
Han Junzhou nodded.
“After his appointment that day, he said his glands were fine. Is that not true? Did he lie to me?” Yue Qi asked, a little panicked. What could be wrong with Su Qing’s body that would make Han Junzhou disregard patient confidentiality and privately approach him?
“He didn’t lie to you. His glands are indeed normal,” Han Junzhou said. “The issue is with his genes.”
“His O chromosome has an additional protein particle. The teacher mentioned this abnormal gene in class before, called ‘reserved marker.’ I don’t know if you remember it.”
Han Junzhou took a stack of documents from his backpack and handed them to Yue Qi. As fellow doctors, Yue Qi could understand the scientific literature much faster, which would help him grasp the details of Su Qing’s genetic anomaly.
“Reserved marker?” Yue Qi furrowed his brows as he flipped through the materials. “This… this is rare, right?”
“Extremely rare,” Han Junzhou replied. “Su Qing is the first case I’ve encountered with this reserved marker since I started practicing medicine. I looked it up, and there are no more than five hundred cases globally.”
It seemed that he had indeed heard of “reserved marker” in class, though he had forgotten the specific details. All he remembered was that the term was used to describe a condition where the patient had “no sexual desire,” which made the class laugh back then.
But now, he couldn’t laugh.
“What does this marker do?” Yue Qi asked. “Is it… life-threatening?” He was too anxious to sift through the documents slowly and wanted to know the key points that concerned him the most.
“No,” Han Junzhou answered immediately. “There is no clear evidence that people with the reserved marker have a higher risk of individual diseases, nor is there any indication of a significantly shortened lifespan.”
“The literature currently mentions its effects only in terms of sexual desire,” Han Junzhou added.
“Phew…” Yue Qi sighed in relief. “That’s good.”
The server brought their meals, and Yue Qi set the documents down, preparing to start eating.
“…” Han Junzhou watched as Yue Qi appeared completely unbothered and couldn’t help but wonder if perhaps he had misunderstood. Maybe Yue Qi didn’t have those kinds of feelings for Su Qing after all?
But seeing how concerned he was for Su Qing—actively helping him arrange appointments, accompanying him to follow-up exams, and Su Qing mentioning that they had kissed before—Han Junzhou knew that Yue Qi wouldn’t have engaged in such intimate behaviors unless there was a certain level of affection involved.
While eating, Han Junzhou thought for a while and finally couldn’t resist asking, “What’s your relationship with Su Qing? Just good friends?”
“We’re good friends,” Yue Qi smiled and replied. “But I’m pursuing him, so we won’t just be good friends for long.” He raised an eyebrow at Han Junzhou with a smirk. “It’s not just you who gets a little fish, I’m going to get a little Qing.”
“…” Han Junzhou was speechless.
Although speechless, he still had to clarify things.
“So, you don’t have any thoughts about his ‘reserved marker’?” Han Junzhou decided to ask more directly.
“Thoughts?” Yue Qi looked confused. “Isn’t it just that he’s a bit reserved? Hey, let’s not discuss this, it’s impolite.” Holding a fork, Yue Qi pointed at Han Junzhou. “I haven’t pried into your little one’s private life, so don’t start gossiping.”
“Who’s gossiping about your private life?” Han Junzhou was a little frustrated, muttering under his breath. “I’m a transgender specialist, and now I’m just giving you professional advice.”
“I didn’t ask for your advice.” Yue Qi said, visibly annoyed. “And how dare you mention being a specialist? You’re leaking patient confidentiality! Be careful, I might file a complaint against you.”
Forget it, I don’t care about other people’s partners being indifferent to intimacy, as long as it’s not mine. Why should I care!
Han Junzhou, irritated and not wanting to speak to Yue Qi anymore, just focused on eating. By the time he finished his meal, all the heartfelt words Su Qing had shared with him in the clinic had replayed in his mind three times. He sighed. A request had been made, and as a trusted person, he had to relay the message.
“Yue Qi, Su Qing asked me to talk to you,” Han Junzhou said seriously. “He’s afraid he might not explain it clearly himself, so he asked me to help. I hope you’ll listen carefully.”
Seeing Han Junzhou’s serious demeanor, Yue Qi couldn’t help but focus and listen intently.
Han Junzhou explained the reserved marker and went on to share the analogy Su Qing had used, the “high threshold, low boiling point” metaphor. As Yue Qi listened, he furrowed his brows.
After hearing Han Junzhou’s full explanation, Yue Qi believed he now understood the concept of Su Qing’s reserved marker. However, he still couldn’t figure out why Han Junzhou seemed so worried.
“So, what’s the point? What exactly do you want to say?” Yue Qi asked.
“Su Qing is going to have a hard time finding a partner who truly matches him,” Han Junzhou replied.
“I think,” Yue Qi paused thoughtfully, “he’s already found someone. I’m the one who’s compatible with him.”
Han Junzhou nodded. “I guessed as much. Su Qing told me that there was an incident where things almost went too far, but he passed out.” Han Junzhou then asked Yue Qi, “Do you remember his state before he passed out? Also, what was your condition at that time? Were you caught in a hormonal frenzy, losing your mind and pushing him to faint?” Han Junzhou looked serious. “Did you lose control?”
“No. Neither of us lost control,” Yue Qi quickly answered. “Before he fainted, everything was calm. We… we kissed a few times, talked for a while, and then suddenly, he fainted. I hadn’t released much, the tide hadn’t even really started…”
As Yue Qi continued, he began to realize something was wrong.
“Do you know what it means that he passed out?” Han Junzhou asked.
Yue Qi bit his lip and didn’t respond.
Han Junzhou continued, “I believe he passed out because of you. Your hormones were too overwhelming for him, and he couldn’t handle it, so he fainted. And you just said that the tide hadn’t even started.”
Yue Qi furrowed his brows tighter, his face becoming more serious.
“Do you understand now?” Han Junzhou asked. “When Su Qing encountered you, he was knocked out by the hormonal tide. He was already boiling. But when he was caught in that storm of desire, you only felt calm.”
“He will never burn hot.”
