“I want you—will you give yourself to me?” Qin Yang asked directly.
Su Qing let out a heavy sigh. He thought to himself, This has gone on long enough. It has to stop.
“Xiao Yang, I’m sorry, but I think we should—”
“Is it because of Yue Qi?” Qin Yang cut him off mid-sentence. Having spent so much time with Su Qing, he could predict exactly what he was about to say—and he didn’t want to hear it. Even if they were going to break up, it wasn’t going to happen now. And he definitely wouldn’t let Su Qing bring it up first.
So, Qin Yang interrupted, picking a topic that would hit where it hurt most. “Is it because he’s an Alpha? Does he attract you?” He squinted his eyes, scrutinizing Su Qing. “Or… can you sense his pheromones?”
“This has nothing to do with Yue Qi,” Su Qing replied. “It has nothing to do with any Alpha.”
Qin Yang clearly didn’t believe him. “Your actions say otherwise. You don’t even try to avoid suspicion when you’re with him.”
“What’s there to avoid?” Su Qing gave a bitter smile. “I don’t need an Alpha. And in his eyes, I’m nothing more than an utterly ordinary Beta. We have no connection whatsoever. We’re completely unrelated, so what suspicion is there to avoid?”
His tone was light and nonchalant, but his heart felt like soft flesh wrapped around sharp grains of sand—aching, raw, and relentless.
Su Qing had accepted his flaws years ago. He treated himself like the most average person, living a life without yearning for some perfect, compatible partner.
But that didn’t mean he could remain indifferent whenever his shortcomings were brought up. Each mention was like a fresh wound. His grains of sand had yet to be polished into pearls.
Qin Yang, knowing Su Qing inside and out, wielded his pain like a weapon, mercilessly turning the blame around. Su Qing, still smarting from the blow, met Qin Yang’s accusing gaze. A sour ache bubbled quietly in his chest.
During that long period, Su Qing, in a haze of confusion, foolishly embarked on a misguided romance with Qin Yang, someone he considered family. Even so, he had never betrayed this relationship.
Su Qing considered himself upright and sincere. On the contrary, it was Qin Yang who had never concealed his closeness with Jiang Manling. He had even allowed her to call him her landlord.
But Su Qing no longer wanted to dwell on it. Whether there was any ambiguity between Qin Yang and Jiang Manling—truthfully, he cared a little but not to the point of heartbreak. In fact, he thought that if Qin Yang could truly fall in love with someone else, he would come to understand that his feelings for Su Qing weren’t love. Then, Su Qing could regain Qin Yang as a family member.
However, Jiang Manling was not the right person. She was scheming and far from an ideal match. Su Qing didn’t feel jealous of her, but he couldn’t help worrying that Qin Yang, in his blind stubbornness, might leave him only to fall into an even bigger trap.
The evening’s argument unexpectedly helped Su Qing clarify the nature of his relationship with Qin Yang. The mental strain of grappling with these emotions left Su Qing utterly drained. Explaining things clearly to Qin Yang was inevitable, but considering how the evening’s misunderstanding—a mere visual misperception—had spiraled into this chaos, Su Qing didn’t think it warranted Qin Yang storming off in a fit of rage.
Su Qing wanted to call for a truce, to let them both calm down. Whether what existed between them was familial love or romantic love was not something to be resolved in heated arguments.
Just as Su Qing hesitated, trying to find the right words to soothe Qin Yang, a disturbing realization struck him—he recalled Jiang Manling’s earlier remarks.
When Qin Yang had come home earlier, he hadn’t said a word before storming upstairs with a dark expression. So how had Jiang Manling known what Qin Yang planned to do upstairs? It seemed they had already discussed it beforehand. Qin Yang’s return had always been about packing up to leave.
As Su Qing pieced it together, he felt a chill spread through his chest. “Your manager is waiting for you downstairs,” he said abruptly. Then, with a cold edge in his voice, he asked, “You came back this time just to pack your things, didn’t you? You were afraid I’d try to stop you, so you made an excuse to lash out at me first—hurling baseless accusations about me and Yue Qi.”
The thought made him sick. That Qin Yang would stoop to using Jiang Manling’s manipulative tactics against him… Su Qing couldn’t believe it. “You casually smeared me and Yue Qi, but it was all just a pretense to make your exit easier. Isn’t that right?”
Seeing the guilt flash across Qin Yang’s face, Su Qing’s heart sank further. How could this be the boy he had raised? Full of sorrow and disbelief, he asked in a hoarse voice, “How could you do this?”
Su Qing’s eyes were filled with unmasked hurt and confusion, but Qin Yang stubbornly refused to back down. “What did I do?” he shot back. “You know perfectly well whether that Alpha was just an excuse or not. Yes, I came back to pack my things. Originally, it was just to attend two months of training, not to move out. But you’re the one who’s been fixated on me leaving, so the moment you saw me packing, you overreacted.”
Qin Yang twisted the situation, his reasoning flimsy and self-serving. “Fine, since you want me to leave so badly, I’ll make it easier for you—I’ll move out immediately!” Finally, Qin Yang revealed his true intention. “The company has arranged housing for me. Whatever’s left of my stuff, I’ll send someone to pick it up in a few days.”
