He shut his eyes tight, bracing himself for death. But what came before the sharp bite of wolf fangs was… an explosion of fierce barking, followed by a heavy, furry paw stomping down on his stomach—and then, a bushy tail whipping across his face.

The ticket inspector’s eyes flew open. He turned his head just in time to see a husky standing protectively over him, barking madly at two wolves that were trying to lunge at him….. But the real fighters was four very determined cats.

Oh, and possibly a half-bald parrot too—

“Scratch it—right in the face! Xiao Hei, don’t hold back! Da Ju, move faster! Smack it like you’re fighting for your dinner!”

“Oh, watch out for its big mouth! Kick it when you roll! Let’s go, athletes! I believe in your final victory!!”

With the squawking encouragement of the balding parrot and the husky’s relentless barks, the four cats worked together in perfect sync, two teams of two. One swiped at a wolf’s nose, while the other clawed at its eyes. The wolves were much bigger, sure—but all they could do was bite. As long as the cats kept moving and striking fast, the dumb wolves couldn’t land a single hit.

The final result? While the cats didn’t defeat the wolves, they were absolutely annoying enough to force them to give up on the now-protected, downed ticket inspector and look elsewhere for easier prey.

As the wolves turned away, retreating to seek other targets, the husky finally puffed itself up and charged forward a few steps, barking triumphantly like it had just won a one-on-two duel.

    The ticket inspector: “……”

Then he felt a warm sensation on his hand and saw the Labrador trying hard to push against his arm, trying to lift him up.

At this moment, the animal team that he had mentally scolded countless times was almost entirely gathered around him. They rubbed their half-dry fur against him and protected him.

The ticket inspector’s eyes instantly turned red, and with the help of the Husky and the Labrador pulling on his clothes, he managed to get back on his feet. Surrounded by the animals, he headed once again toward the safe zone where the crowd had gathered. Though his pace was slow and one leg was dripping with blood, not a single wolf showed any intention of wasting time on him.

From a professional standpoint, he knew he shouldn’t think this way, but as he walked forward with the animals by his side, he truly felt from the bottom of his heart that he was glad—so glad—that he hadn’t noticed them boarding the train, that he had let them come here with the crowd.

By the chaotic light of the bonfire, he once again saw the large police dog protecting the girl ahead and thought again—he was so glad they were here.

Just then, he heard a piercing scream from up ahead. He instinctively looked in that direction and saw the young lady who had knocked him down earlier being dragged away by the neck by a massive grey wolf. In the dim light, he couldn’t see the expression on her face clearly, but he heard her dying, blood-choked voice, changed by pain:

“Song Bo! Song Bo—why did you push me? You—cough cough—killed… me—”

The young lady’s boyfriend, Song Bo—who had previously been so deferential toward him—was now hiding behind a man holding a telescopic baton, his face pale. A flicker of guilt passed through his eyes upon hearing those words, but his expression remained sorrowful and pained:

“Feifei! Feifei’s been taken by a wolf! Somebody save her! Please go save her! She’s talking nonsense out of fear—she’s so young, she can’t die!”

At this moment, everyone was still in a state of panic. Almost no one was paying attention to anyone outside of their own family or close ones.

Naturally, few heard Wang Feifei’s final scream, her resentment, or Song Bo’s utterly hypocritical words.

But suddenly, Song Bo heard a cold female voice whisper in his ear:

“Aren’t you her boyfriend? If she’s so young and shouldn’t die, then you go save her!”

Immediately, Song Bo felt a powerful force against his back—the man who had just been standing in front of him to protect him suddenly reached out and shoved him forward!

In that instant, every hair on Song Bo’s body stood on end, and his fear peaked. He let out a shrill scream he couldn’t control and scrambled back to the safe zone in a panic.

When he finally made it back, shocked and furious, he turned to glare at the person who had pushed him—only to meet the cold, glasses-framed eyes of Dr. Liu Jin and the contemptuous expression on Hua Yingchun’s face beside him.

“What kind of trash are you?!”

“Using your girlfriend as a shield against wolves and then refusing to admit it afterward. So this is your idea of ‘principles’ and ‘character’?!”

“Open your damn eyes and look at the people walking over from there! You’re worse than the animals you keep talking about!!”

Song Bo’s face turned bright red in an instant, but what burned more in his chest was the rage and spite of being exposed.

Still, this was not the time to go against a couple who could clearly fight. He lowered his head, putting on a submissive act, but still stubbornly insisted, “I didn’t push Feifei. You must have seen it wrong.”

Hua Yingchun let out a cold laugh, but now wasn’t the time to argue right from wrong. She turned away to face the wolves again, focusing on what needed to be done.

When the ticket inspector made it into the safe zone, those without fighting ability were already surrounded by those who could still fight.

Gou Fugui, Xie Tianlang, Qin Feng, Lu Chengfeng, four train security officers, and several people from the crowd with martial arts or fitness training had formed the outer ring, standing between the group and the dozens of wolves surrounding them.

The wolves, fresh from ambushes, had blood staining their fangs and fur. Their eyes were locked onto the people in front of them, still itching to strike.

At that moment, Xie Tianlang narrowed his eyes slowly and took a light step forward with his right foot.

And just then, the wolf king—who had been standing motionless on the outer edge—suddenly howled again.

It was its third howl, but this time, it was no longer a command to attack.

Almost the instant its cry echoed out, the previously aggressive wolf pack turned and fled without a moment’s hesitation.

They moved at full speed, dragging away whatever prey they could, and in mere moments, vanished into the pitch-black, rain-soaked night.

Just as silently as they had arrived, they disappeared—leaving behind only blood and scattered limbs all over the tunnel floor.

Only after the last grey wolf disappeared into the woods did the wolf king finally move its gaze away from Xie Tianlang. It glanced briefly at Gou Fugui, whose white hair glowed faintly against his forehead.

No one knew how much time passed before the silence of the rainy, black night was finally shattered—by a piercing, grief-stricken cry.
