Although the wolf pack had left, the fear and pain they brought didn’t vanish with their departure.

For the next ten minutes, the people gathered in the tunnel maintained a defensive, cautious posture, afraid to make any movements, not even daring to cry or call for help loudly—

Everyone feared that the hungry wolves might return for another brutal ambush.

Thankfully, Xie Tianlang spoke up first: “Once the wolves have successfully hunted, they won’t attack again, at least not tonight.

We’ll set up three campfires at both ends of the tunnel. My brothers and I will guard this entrance, while the train conductor and the four security officers will take the other side. With us guarding both ends, along with five dogs and four cats to provide early warnings, there won’t be any more surprise attacks.”

“So relax, and do what you need to do. Count the casualties and continue treating the injured. Those who aren’t hurt, rest up—close your eyes if you can’t sleep. We need to keep moving tomorrow.”

Xie Tianlang’s voice was deep and powerful, and his words clearly stated what everyone needed to do.

As soon as he spoke, it was as if the fear and danger that had frozen everyone in place were suddenly lifted, and people began reacting as if the spell had been broken.

The previously quiet sobs turned into loud cries and wails, and along with them, people anxiously called out for their family and friends.

Most of them found their loved ones and embraced each other in relief, but some families and friends, though not far apart, remained silent like strangers.

Those who hadn’t been badly hurt and still had some energy began to silently gather up the firewood scattered during the chaos of the run, while also searching for their lost luggage.

But more still were the cries of families of the injured, urgently calling for help.

“Is there a doctor? Doctor, please come check on my daughter!! This damn girl got bitten by a wolf while saving me, this old man! She’s only 26! After losing such a huge chunk of flesh from her shoulder, what are we going to do?!” The old father clutched his daughter, tears streaming down his face in pain.

On the other side, the wife and son gathered around the father, crying as well: “Doctor, please hurry! My dad’s arm is bleeding a lot! He’s in so much pain, he can’t even speak—woo…”

“Doctor, please come check on my mother! She has a huge hole in her stomach… Oh God, what are we going to do?! Oh God! Oh God!”

Soon, the entire tunnel was filled with the rising and falling sounds of crying.

Gou Fugui, while tightly pressing his lips together and using bandages to tend to Blackback’s wound, listened as Song Sanchuan reported heavily: “I just went for a round, and at least over twenty people were bitten by wolves. More than ten are seriously injured and can’t move.”

“About thirty or forty people fell while running and got lightly injured from crashing into the fire piles… There’s one idiot who was running too fast and didn’t notice the wall in front of him—he crashed straight into it and is still unconscious in the corner.”

Song Sanchuan gritted his teeth: “But only seven wolves were killed by us.”

Among them, the leader killed four, Blackback killed one, meaning that aside from the ones Xie Tianlang and Blackback killed, only two of the cunning wolves were killed.

Xie Tianlang, hearing this, remained unfazed: “There’s no need to be angry. Survival of the fittest. These wolves have survived through consecutive rainstorms. They’re the strongest in this mountain range.”

And the wolves follow orders, don’t push forward recklessly, don’t get greedy, even know how to cooperate. Compared to this mob of people who, when faced with danger, only know to scream and run, even pushing others to take the hit, it’s strange if they didn’t win.

Of course, Song Sanchuan knew this, but he couldn’t help but sigh: “So what do we do next? Are we really just going to tough it out here for the night?”

“We can survive, but after this scare, I’m afraid at least half the people in the group won’t be able to hold on and won’t be able to continue tomorrow.”

Xie Tianlang didn’t respond, his gaze fixed on the fire piles ahead, which had been reignited and were now burning once more.

Gou Fugui was beside the fire, carefully dressing the wound on Blackback’s neck.

Luckily, the bite wasn’t very deep. Although it was still bleeding, after spraying some medicine and wrapping it up, the wound finally started to slowly heal.

Gou Fugui reached out to pat Blackback’s large head and, looking up, met those deep, sharp eyes.

They stared at each other for a moment before Gou Fugui shifted his gaze. He took out the jar of honey from his pocket and squeezed a couple of mouthfuls, observing the grim scene in the tunnel.

After drinking three large gulps of honey, he stuffed the jar back into his pocket and, with a slight lift of his chin, his sharp eyes narrowed with a slight challenge: “This bunch of weaklings can’t carry on. I’m heading out tonight to find help. Any man here who wants to join me?”

He added with a smirk, “You up for it?”

His almost provocative words caused Song Sanchuan and Jin Mantang nearby to gasp, while even Qin Feng and Lu Hu mentally applauded their brother’s courage.

Xie Tianlang raised his sharp brows high, a massive grin spreading across his face. “Fugui, do you know what happened to the people who asked me if I could do it?”

White-haired Fugui, sensing something ominous from Xie Tianlang’s devilish smile, had a bad feeling but didn’t get a chance to decline hearing more. Xie Tianlang immediately delivered the answer.

“Half of them died, and the other half became my family.”

    Badger Fugui: “???”

He could understand the dying part, but what did “becoming family” mean???

It seemed that Xie Tianlang knew exactly what was going through Fugui’s mind. He raised his eyebrows and looked at Song Sanchuan with an exaggeratedly fake, gentle gaze.

Song Sanchuan, caught under Xie Tianlang’s stare, struggled for three seconds before he couldn’t hold it anymore and, right then and there, gave Badger Fugui a perfect explanation—

Song Sanchuan, eyes closed, shamelessly shouted to Xie Tianlang: “Dad!”

That shout of “Dad” rang out loud and clear, so much so that even Blackback, lying on the ground, turned his head at the sound.

Song Sanchuan’s lips twitched. Even Blackback was secretly taking advantage of him!

    Badger Fugui: “…”

Badger Fugui stared at Xie Tianlang, and after a long silence, he couldn’t even come up with a single word to retort.

This was seriously a wolf pack!

Also, when could he have a team like this that called him “Dad”? He’d be happy with “Boss” too!

Honey Badger Fugui just loved being the big brother!

Badger Fugui, utterly speechless from the werewolf’s show of boldness, rolled his eyes and walked toward the other end of the tunnel to find Lu Chengfeng.

But of course, Xie Tianlang couldn’t resist and followed him, effortlessly matching his pace, repeating the same sentence over and over again: “If I’m better than you, which family member will you be[1]?”

Badger Fugui was getting seriously annoyed, sneering inwardly: Becoming your family? Easy. I’ll be your dad!

Xie Tianlang narrowed his eyes. Who calls who “Dad” was still uncertain, isn’t it?

When Lu Chengfeng heard that Badger Fugui and Xie Tianlang were planning to travel nonstop through the night to the Hailan train station to seek help, he froze for a few seconds before a deeply moved and shaken expression appeared on his face.

Of course, he hoped someone would do this. After all, there were so many injured and traumatized people in the group, and with hours of walking and the inevitable rain and wind, it was likely that many would fall ill by morning.

In such a situation, continuing to march forward quickly would be nearly impossible, and they might even have to leave some people behind who couldn’t continue.

He was the train conductor, and he had promised not to abandon anyone. He wanted to bring everyone to safety, but the reality was too harsh.

He had been thinking about solutions by the fire for a long time, repeatedly considering his options.

Now, two people had voluntarily given him the best option, and the responsible conductor felt a huge sense of relief. Yet, he also felt guilty and worried:

“Is it really okay? You both exerted so much effort fighting the wolves just now. Walking through the night in the rain would be a huge strain on your bodies…”

“As a train conductor, letting passengers go out to seek help, it’s just too useless of me… How about I go with you? More people would mean more support…”

Lu Chengfeng almost spoke in a frantic manner but was abruptly interrupted by the cold-hearted Fugui: “With your weak body, don’t even think about coming with us. As the train conductor, just stay behind and keep everyone calm. Wait for us to bring the car over to rescue you.”

“Don’t feel guilty. After all, people have their differences. Just accept it seriously.”

Badger Fugui paused for a moment, then cleared his throat as he glanced at Lu Chengfeng: “…Alright, we’ll gear up and head out.”

He didn’t manage to say the line, ‘If I bring back the reinforcements successfully, you’ll call me Dad.

It was clear that Xie Tianlang had thicker skin than he did.

    Lu Chengfeng: “???”

He felt like the long-haired youth still had something he wanted to say?
