Chapter 18: Then Come With Me

Lin You was sitting in a café with Feng Qing, both sipping milk tea. Feng Qing had recently become quite fond of this drink. Lin You didn’t mind it, so whenever Feng Qing invited him out, he’d come along—and would often even bring back a cup for Sade.

“Are you going back to the Clerics[1]‘ Dorm this weekend?” Feng Qing asked Lin You.

It was nearing the end of the year, and the academy would soon be on a one-week break for the New Year holiday. Most students would return home to spend the festival with their families, but Feng Qing knew about Lin You’s situation—he usually stayed in the dorms alone.

“Yeah, but my heat period is coming up soon. I need to check with Sade and see how he wants to handle it.” Lin You’s monthly heat just happened to fall during the holiday. Normally, he would spend that time with Sade. Feng Qing’s question served as a good reminder that he needed to talk to him about it.

“Times like these make me realize how tough you S-classes have it,” Feng Qing said sincerely.

“Once you’re designated an S-class, your life isn’t really your own anymore. Even marriage gets forced on you. Luckily, you ended up with a top-tier Alpha like Sade. Imagine if it were some ugly, bad-tempered, loser Alpha—you’d be a beautiful flower stuck in a pile of manure. That’d be your life ruined, just like that.” Feng Qing couldn’t help but marvel at the way fate had worked out.

“I’ve never really thought about it that way.” From the very beginning, Lin You had only ever had eyes for Sade. Even before he was old enough to be romantically interested in anyone, he knew that one day he would marry Sade. The first person he ever liked was Sade, and he’d never considered anyone else since.

“You’re really loyal,” Feng Qing said. “There was even an Omega who confessed to Sade recently, said they didn’t care about status or anything. He’s super popular around here, you know.”

“I never planned to control him,” Lin You replied calmly. “And I’m not interested in anyone else anyway.”

“That’s a good attitude—makes things simpler.” Feng Qing looked at Lin You’s composed face and felt even more admiration for his emotional stability.

“Yeah. I used to think the monthly heat was a pain,” Lin You said, his gaze turning to Feng Qing’s eyes, rarely speaking so openly. “But now, I’ve come to terms with it. At least I don’t have to deal with things like mental breakdowns or dissociation.”

It wasn’t that Lin You lived without any troubles. Even humans who seemed calm on the surface still had their own burdens. Some people needed to talk to friends to vent and regulate their emotions. Lin You, however, relied on himself to absorb and digest it all. Just because he didn’t complain didn’t mean he never suffered—he simply wasn’t good at expressing it.

S-class Alphas and Omegas often experienced mental or physical issues due to their overwhelmingly strong spiritual energy and pheromones. Some even died young or became disabled because they couldn’t find proper treatment or ways to relieve the pressure. That’s why the Empire developed the marriage pairing system in the first place—so that S-class Alphas and Omegas could rely on pheromone-matching to survive in a healthier way.

“Honestly, your heat issue is already pretty well taken care of—and, let’s be real, you’re living a pretty blissful sex life too,” Feng Qing teased, flashing a mischievous grin. “Do you know how many people are drooling over Sade’s body? And yet you’ve had access to it since you were 18!”

“What nonsense are you spouting?” Lin You narrowed his blue eyes and glared at him.

“But seriously, I’ve never heard you mention Sade having any issues,” Feng Qing suddenly said.

“He doesn’t. And besides, that’s not something you just casually talk about,” Lin You replied with a hint of exasperation. Truth be told, he owed a lot to Feng Qing—when his first heat had hit, he’d been totally overwhelmed and clueless about what was happening. Thankfully, Feng Qing had been there and rushed him to the hospital. That’s how Feng Qing ended up knowing about his condition. Normally, hidden conditions of S-class Alphas or Omegas weren’t something to be shared with outsiders.

“Even if others don’t know, you should at least know,” Feng Qing said with a look of helplessness. “You’ll be living together in the future, after all.” He looked at Lin You with that usual tone of “I can’t believe I have to explain this.” Lin You was great in every way—except when it came to life experience and social awareness, where he was totally clueless. Even when he’d been bullied as a child, he hadn’t realized it was bullying.

“I really haven’t noticed anything,” Lin You replied after thinking seriously about it. As far as he could tell, Sade didn’t have any physical or mental issues at all. Maybe he was just one of those rare, genetically perfect individuals.

Before heading back to his room, Lin You did what had become a habit—he bought another cup of milk tea to give to Sade.

“Thank you, Yuyou,” Sade said with a bright, sincere smile as he accepted the milk tea. Even though he didn’t know when the whole world had started thinking he loved milk tea so much, anything given by Lin You was a favorite in his book.

“Um… I wanted to talk to you about something,” Lin You began. “This weekend is that… monthly time again, and it overlaps with the New Year holiday. How should we plan for it?”

In the past, they’d discussed such matters through their light-brain messaging system[2], always using official, detached wording. Now, talking face to face, Lin You suddenly felt incredibly awkward—he couldn’t even say the details aloud.

“Oh, right—it’s holiday time,” Sade understood instantly. He didn’t hesitate and added, “Do you want to come home with me? Do you have any plans for the break?”

“No… not really,” Lin You answered instinctively—then realized he’d replied too quickly.

“Great, then come home with me,” Sade said with a wide smile, and before Lin You could object, he followed up with: “It’s settled then!” His tone was cheerful and decisive, clearly not giving Lin You any room to refuse.

    Footnotes:

    1. Clerics: refers to a specialized role trained in both spiritual power (mental energy) and combat support. Unlike religious priests, clerics in this interstellar setting act more like tactical support units—capable of using spiritual energy for sensing, healing, and forming psychic barriers. The term is used to reflect their function within the military-like academy system, similar to support roles seen in fantasy or sci-fi games.
    2. light-brain messaging system: refers to an advanced futuristic personal digital assistant or AI-integrated device commonly used in interstellar or sci-fi settings. It functions similarly to a smartphone or holographic terminal, allowing instant messaging, calls, data access, navigation, and more. In this story, characters use it frequently for communication, scheduling, or sending messages—essentially serving as their all-in-one smart device.
