    Chapter 44: Vengeance in Motion

    Upper Council.

Vice Speaker Roger declared, “All scheduled matters for today’s session have concluded. We will now proceed with any emergency motions. If you have something to raise, please speak.”

“I have an emergency motion,” Councilor Jerry raised his hand.

Vice Speaker Roger said, “Councilor Jerry, you may proceed.”

Councilor Jerry stood and addressed the room, “Chairman, esteemed councilors, I stand before you today to impeach Senior High Priest Lin You of the Temple. His recent paper titled ‘How Spiritual Power Can Influence Cognition’ constitutes a serious violation of human rights. Should this research move forward into human experimentation, it would blatantly contradict humanitarian ethics. Therefore, I call for Senior High Priest Lin You to appear before this Council for investigation. If any of these allegations prove true, the experiment must be halted immediately, and those responsible must be held accountable under Imperial law.”

Vice Speaker Roger responded, “In that case, it is only appropriate to dispatch someone to summon Senior High Priest Lin You so that he may speak in his own defense. While we await his arrival, we shall recess for now.”

Following the announcement, the Vice Speaker motioned for a small unit of the Council’s Guard to be dispatched to the Temple.

The chamber instantly broke into a buzz of activity—some voices indignant, others gloating, and still others clueless. Regardless of the actual content or merit of the research, the act of targeting the Crown Prince’s consort was, in itself, a provocation.

Hearing this, Sade slightly raised his eyes and glanced at General Allen. Their gazes met, and in the depths of his father’s expression, Sade saw something telling. His heart sank slightly—they were making their move at last

As soon as the Vice Speaker declared the recess, General Allen and Sade quietly withdrew to the royal family’s private lounge.

“They made their move after all. Pretty fast reaction, I’d say,” Sade remarked irritably.

“The past few days, several of Roger’s strongholds have been taken down one by one. It’s no surprise they’re running out of patience,” General Allen replied calmly.

Jerry had always belonged to Vice Speaker Roger’s political faction. His actions clearly weren’t just personal—they represented the will of Roger’s entire camp.

That day, after learning of the potential intentions behind the Zerg’s biological research, General Allen immediately ordered covert agents to investigate. During the probe into the Zerg’s suspected use of regenerative technology to engineer enhanced soldiers, they unexpectedly uncovered that Roger had secretly smuggled Zerg genetic material and had already established a private laboratory, conducting experiments in secret for some time.

As the spies delved deeper into the facility, they gradually pieced together the full scope of the situation.

It turned out that Roger’s youngest son had become a vegetative patient due to a traffic accident last year. Desperate after seeking help through every medical and spiritual avenue to no avail, the family had heard rumors that Zerg regenerative genes might awaken vegetative states. Whether true or not, Imperial medicine indeed had no solution. With nothing to lose, they took a gamble—initiating contact with the Zerg and trading Imperial military intelligence for experimental genetic material and related technology.

Just days ago, Sade and his team successfully raided two of Roger’s hidden strongholds—one of which was a cryogenic gene vault[1]. The gene bank was completely destroyed, dealing a devastating blow to Roger’s plans. No wonder he had become unhinged and resorted to such desperate measures.

“But of all things, they dared to come after Lin You?” Sade’s face darkened. “They’ve really got some nerve.” His Yuyou was someone who poured himself solely into research, kind, well-behaved, and never meddled in politics. And yet those despicable insects dared try to slander him—unforgivable.

“Rumors say your relationship with Lin You is strained. That’s why they dared go after him—they figured you wouldn’t protect him. Maybe you should reflect on yourself a little. How did those rumors even start?” General Allen said with a trace of displeasure.

“Hmph. As if I wouldn’t protect him.” Sade’s tone turned cold. “They’ve gone too far, touching what’s mine. I’m going to the Temple to get him right now! No one lays a hand on my people and gets away with it.”

He stood abruptly, ready to storm out.

“Go ahead… wait, the High Priest just sent a message.” General Allen’s terminal chimed with an alert. When he checked, it was a direct encrypted message from High Priest Heather.

“She says she will attend the Upper Council’s hearing in Lin You’s place,” General Allen informed Sade.

“Perfect. Then Lin You doesn’t need to waste his time there,” Sade said, visibly relaxing. Knowing that the High Priest would be present put his mind at ease.

“Since she’s there, let’s see what show they’ve prepared for this afternoon,” Allen mused. It was better to keep Sade out of the spotlight for now to avoid unnecessary complications.

“In that case, Father, I’m off to pick up my wife from work.”

In high spirits, Sade boarded a sleek black starship arranged by his security team and discreetly headed toward the Temple. On the way, he sent a message to Achille:

    “Blow up Roger’s last lab.”

That final lab had held the best chance of pairing with Roger’s son and had been hidden the deepest. Sade originally intended to leave it intact—both as a lifeline and a bargaining chip for future negotiations.

But now? That chance was gone.

They’d dared touch his person. He had no patience left for diplomacy. Let everything burn.

He also sent a message to Lin You:

Sade: Baby, I’m waiting at the back gate. Black starship. Come out quickly.

    Yuyou: Okay.

Not long after, Lin You peeked out from the back gate. He looked around cautiously, even swept the surroundings with his mental power to ensure he wasn’t being followed before boarding the starship.

As soon as he stepped inside and saw Sade sitting in the backseat, arms open with a warm smile on his face, all the tension he had been suppressing suddenly melted away. What surged up instead was a flood of grievance and confusion.

“Sade… what’s going on?” Lin You asked. He just couldn’t figure out what warranted him being investigated. Was it about the incident on Ice Tungsten Star? But no one knew about that secret… or was it related to his research?

“Baby, I’m sorry. This time, you got dragged in because of me,” Sade said, pulling him into a hug. “It’s because we uncovered Roger’s illegal operations. So now they’re targeting you to get back at me, trying to put me in a tight spot.”

“So, to put it simply, Roger’s underground lab and genetic samples were mostly destroyed by you—months of effort and his last hope gone in flames—so now he’s taking revenge?” Lin You said, frowning.

“That’s how it looks on the surface, but I think his real goal is to divert our attention,” Sade explained.

“He’s trying to make us scramble so he can quietly relocate his final lab. We were actually planning for that. Even if he hadn’t done this, we were going to pretend we didn’t find that lab so he could act freely. That way, we could lower his guard and follow the trail to find proof of his dealings with the Zerg.”

“But now… he’s out of chances. He made the mistake of targeting you.” Sade’s grin turned mischievous, like a kid who had just pulled off a prank.

“I already had someone set off some fireworks at that last lab. I really wish I could’ve seen his face when he found out everything had gone up in flames. Must’ve been quite a sight.”

“I’m not concerned about that,” Lin You said calmly.

“But the matter of my impeachment still needs to be handled. Since my research is being questioned, I should be the one to defend it myself.”

“The High Priest already went to the Council in your place. Those councilors wouldn’t dare touch her,” Sade reassured him.

“That’s not the point. What matters to me is academic autonomy,” Lin You said, his tone resolute.

“This is supposed to be an era of freedom. If the Upper Council dares to question and impeach me so casually today, what’s stopping them from doing the same to every researcher tomorrow? I need to stand up for my research—and for the Empire’s academic freedom. Let’s go home and grab my files. I’m going to the Council.”

“Ah… Yuyou, you really…” Sade sighed.

“Alright, alright, I’ll listen to you.”

How could he say no? His Yuyou wasn’t a fragile Omega who hid behind others waiting to be protected. If this was what he wanted to do, then Sade’s role… was to stand firmly at his back—as his strongest support.

    Footnotes:

    1. cryogenic gene vault: refers to a secure storage facility where genetic material—such as DNA samples, tissue, or cells—is preserved at extremely low temperatures using cryogenic technology. This method ensures long-term viability of the samples, allowing for future research, cloning, or regeneration efforts. In sci-fi contexts like this, such vaults often store rare or experimental genes, including those used for medical or biological enhancement.
