Chapter Index

Shen Ci’s interrogation was like a catalyst, instantly making that corner of grievance in Yan Yuzhou’s heart even more aggrieved.

If it weren’t for this wretched omega body, why would he have suffered from being harassed by a pervert? Yan Yuzhou had lived for 25 years outside the book and had never had anyone dare to touch his waistline.

“This has nothing to do with you,” Yan Yuzhou bit his lip, trying his best to hold back the tears that were about to burst forth, not wanting Shen Ci to see his vulnerability and helplessness.

Shen Ci frowned slightly at Yan Yuzhou’s clear attempt to separate their relationship. The air was filled with the scent of his kind—desire, dominance, and the urge to conquer—all mingling on Yan Yuzhou’s clothes, making Shen Ci’s heart sink.

Terrifying images flooded his mind—nightmares from his youth of an omega caught cheating, reeking of other alphas, personally killing his own legal alpha spouse. Shen Ci was nearly driven mad by these nightmarish memories.

Looking into Shen Ci’s eyes, Yan Yuzhou saw many emotions swirling in a moment—complexity, fear, hatred, sorrow. These negative emotions mixed together in Shen Ci’s pupils, swirling like turbulent seawater, almost drowning him.

For a moment, Yan Yuzhou even thought Shen Ci might hit him.

However, after a brief moment, Shen Ci’s eyes returned to clarity, the complex emotions vanished as if they had never appeared. In their place was a faint loneliness that Yan Yuzhou would not have noticed if he hadn’t observed closely.

Lonely without self-awareness, making one feel… heartache.

Clearing his throat, Yan Yuzhou lightly coughed, feeling it necessary to explain himself to avoid Shen Ci coming up with something unpleasant to say.

“The bus was too crowded. Those scents got on me by accident.”

After saying this nonchalantly, Yan Yuzhou looked up to observe Shen Ci’s reaction, seeing a look of scrutiny in his eyes, as if carefully discerning whether Yan Yuzhou was lying.

Ha, Yan Yuzhou knew Shen Ci wouldn’t easily believe him. He shouldn’t have expected Shen Ci to trust him at all. Lowering his eyes, Yan Yuzhou pursed his lips, blinked his sore eyes, and turned away.

“Tomorrow…” Shen Ci suddenly spoke, his voice hoarse and low.

Yan Yuzhou’s heart trembled, his steps unconsciously halting. With his back to Shen Ci, he stood there, waiting for what would come next.

“Tomorrow,” Shen Ci continued, “let Driver Xiao Wang take you.”

Yan Yuzhou’s heart pounded fiercely. He slowly turned around, looking at Shen Ci, who was three or five steps away, and spoke lightly,

“Didn’t you say you didn’t want to see me? So what does it mean to take your car?”

Shen Ci looked at him, taking a deep breath, with a slightly compromising expression, and said, “I said, unless necessary, don’t appear in front of me. But clearly, this matter has exceeded the scope of non-necessity.”

Yan Yuzhou was convinced by his argument, laughing lightly with self-mockery and defiance, “Really? It’s just getting some other alpha’s scent on me. It’s not like another alpha did anything to me. Mr. Shen, there’s no need to make such a fuss, right?”

Seeing Yan Yuzhou’s indifferent attitude, Shen Ci felt a weight on his heart, suffocating him. He lightly parted his thin lips and uttered a few words, “Even getting someone else’s scent on you is unacceptable.”

Yan Yuzhou’s lips twitched. He always felt that the world in the book he had entered was like an animal kingdom, where alphas had a strong sense of possession over their omegas. Even the slightest scent of another person would be considered infidelity.

    Ridiculous.

Yan Yuzhou was not really anything to Shen Ci. The prenuptial agreement was very clear; they were merely in a contractual relationship with no emotional involvement.

He felt it was necessary to remind this alpha, who couldn’t distinguish right from wrong.

“Mr. Shen,” Yan Yuzhou gathered his courage, crossing his arms in a negotiating stance, “I believe you remember the terms of our prenuptial agreement, correct?”

Shen Ci’s eyes flashed with sharpness, as if he had guessed Yan Yuzhou’s intention, but he still nodded, his tone neutral, “I remember.”

“In that case, Mr. Shen, you must agree that our relationship is merely a matter of paperwork. In name, I am your spouse, but in reality, once the conditions are met, we will divorce.”

As soon as he mentioned divorce, Yan Yuzhou could clearly feel Shen Ci’s gaze change. His eyes narrowed slightly, exuding a penetrating intensity, “So?”

“So,” Yan Yuzhou forced himself to remain calm, “since we are bound to divorce sooner or later, I believe we should give each other some freedom. I am not your true omega, and you are not my destined alpha. We won’t have any emotional or physical relationship, and you don’t need to bear any obligations or responsibilities towards me.”

After saying this, Yan Yuzhou paused to observe Shen Ci’s reaction. Shen Ci’s expression remained stern, without a trace of a smile. Without him speaking, it was impossible to tell if he agreed or disagreed with Yan Yuzhou’s words.

However, the increasingly cold atmosphere made it clear that he was in a bad mood.

A faint scent of cold snow entered Yan Yuzhou’s nostrils, making him feel cold, but his lungs felt clear and refreshed, as if all the dust particles he had inhaled on the bus had been cleaned out.

Yan Yuzhou greedily took a few breaths, feeling the nausea in his stomach ease significantly, as if a snowfall had cleared the smog, making everything bright and clean.

Regaining his composure, Yan Yuzhou looked directly into Shen Ci’s eyes. The sharpness had faded, replaced by a calm indifference, completely devoid of warmth.

Then, Yan Yuzhou finally heard Shen Ci speak.

“Since you understand that you are my nominal spouse, you should also understand the duties of a spouse,” Shen Ci said, his tone low but unmistakable. “As my spouse, you must maintain your honorable reputation and not bring shame to the Shen family by being tainted with other alpha pheromones.”

After saying this, he watched Yan Yuzhou’s face turn pale, a hint of cruelty flashing in his eyes. “So, as my nominal other half, I remind you to uphold the responsibilities you should bear.”

Yan Yuzhou felt his head buzzing, partly because Shen Ci’s pheromones were too strong, and partly because Shen Ci’s words felt like a harsh wake-up call.

It turned out that Shen Ci wasn’t really worried about him being bullied by other alphas. It was all about family honor, and he was just imposing behavioral standards and demands on a nominal spouse.

Thinking back, why had his heart raced when Shen Ci said, “Let driver Xiao Wang take you home”?

    Absolutely ridiculous.
