ROT CH 32
by jj.ssatranslatesChapter 32: Success in Love and Exams
After completing the circuit of thirty exam stations without any mishaps, Bai Chengyu walked out of the examination hall, calm and composed. Outside, he saw his classmates who had already finished the test gathered in the corridor, quietly consoling each other, their faces full of disappointment.
Liao Sheng and Li Wenting were comforting Wen Yuyi, who had red-rimmed eyes from stress.
“It was really difficult. You weren’t the only one who missed it; we didn’t catch it either, right, Bai Shao?” Liao Sheng said, signaling to Bai Chengyu as he approached them. “That question on the femur was so tricky—it actually asked for three specific points, and we all missed one…”
“The femur?” Bai Chengyu thought back. “That question required identifying five points in total. Besides marking left and right sides, you had to include the Caput femoris, Collum femoris, Trochanter major, Condylus lateralis, and Condyli tibiae.”
The classmates standing nearby groaned upon hearing Bai Chengyu fluently list all the answers. They hadn’t expected the professor to pack five sub-questions into a single long bone analysis within the one-minute response time. In their rush to scribble down answers, they barely glanced at two or three stickers, leaving no time to inspect the bone further.
“One minute! How could anyone finish in just one minute?”
“I couldn’t even finish copying from the reference material in that time.”
“Xue Ba, was that femur question really about five parts?”
“I only wrote down four,” Xue Bingsheng admitted dejectedly. “I didn’t have time to include the Trochanter major.”
Hearing that even Xue Ba couldn’t finish the answer completely, the students collectively cursed the professor’s cruelty.
“Actually, the response time for each station was one and a half minutes. Didn’t you notice?” Bai Chengyu said, surprised at how imprecise his classmates’ internal clocks were.
“…” His classmates seethed in frustration at Bai Chengyu’s remark, feeling as if he was kicking them while they were down. The problem wasn’t the response time; the real issue was the professor’s mercilessness!
Liao Sheng and Li Wenting, who had been busy comforting others, also turned pale after hearing Bai Chengyu list the answers. Wen Yuyi, overwhelmed, burst into tears—she had only written one answer for the femur question and had mistakenly marked the sides incorrectly in her panic.
The femur was a straightforward, clean long bone; compared to the complex structures of nerves and muscles, it was relatively simple. Yet, they hadn’t anticipated the trap in this question. The blow was so crushing they didn’t even want to check their answers anymore—just felt like giving up and starting over.
At that moment, Wang Ziheng staggered out of the examination hall. He was the last examinee and immediately leaned on Bai Chengyu as he walked out. “Oh my god, by the end, my vision was all blurry,” he complained bitterly. “Whoever peeled off the labels haphazardly is such a bastard! The arrow next to the foramen magnum was missing, and I couldn’t figure out where the label was pointing. I just randomly wrote down posterior cranial fossa.”
“…The answer was foramen occipitale magnum—the foramen magnum,” Bai Chengyu replied, incredulous. “Wasn’t the label placed right beside the opening?”
“Is… is that so?” Wang Ziheng looked back at Liao Sheng, Li Wenting, and Wen Yuyi in confusion. “Did you all write foramen magnum too?”
Liao Sheng nodded solemnly, while Wen Yuyi, who had been sniffing, couldn’t help but laugh at Wang Ziheng’s clueless expression. Seeing her laugh, Li Wenting finally relaxed and patted Wang Ziheng on the shoulder. “Let’s go. No more checking answers or talking to Bai Shao. I’ll treat you all to a meal.”
And so, while Bai Chengyu excelled both in exams and matters of love, the fragile boat of friendship capsized without warning.
The midterms were finally over, leaving most students feeling utterly defeated.
When Han Junzhou arrived for the afternoon class, he was greeted by a crowd of dispirited students. Surprised, he asked, “What happened to all of you? The exams are done, and it’s Friday—shouldn’t you be happy?” He chuckled as he scanned the tired faces before him. “Why do you all look so drained?”
“Ai…”
“Don’t even bring it up…”
“I’m dead meat when I go home. My dad’s going to chew me out…”
The classroom was filled with complaints, with Bai Chengyu being the sole exception—he sat upright, his eyes gleaming as he stared at Han Junzhou.
Han Junzhou noticed and winked at him discreetly.
“Alright, the exams are over, and it’s too late for regrets now,” Han Junzhou said, picking up his textbook. “The purpose of exams is to help identify gaps in your knowledge so you can improve. I’ve already uploaded the grades for Secondary Gender Studies. You can check them in the results portal after class.”
He turned to write on the blackboard but paused when he heard the collective sigh from his students. Turning back, he added, “I’ve reviewed the papers. The questions this time weren’t easy—in fact, they were quite difficult. While some of you may be dissatisfied with your scores, overall, you’ve exceeded my expectations. Most of you passed, so don’t be too discouraged. At least I feel confident reporting back to Professor Chen.” He smiled warmly at the class.
“This time, one student performed exceptionally well. He was the only one in the entire grade to achieve a perfect score.” Han Junzhou’s gaze fell on his confident boy, and he smiled. “Bai Chengyu, well done. Keep it up. Good luck.” He nodded at Bai Chengyu in approval.
Being praised publicly, Bai Chengyu’s eyes squinted with joy as he grinned broadly.
Xue Ba, who had initially looked at Han Junzhou with equal confidence, was stunned. He realized that the teacher wasn’t looking at him and that the name announced wasn’t his. He froze, unable to process his shock. The rest of the students, hearing that someone had actually achieved a perfect score, were a mix of envy and even deeper discouragement.
Under the desk, Wang Ziheng was stealthily checking his grades on his phone. Staring at his score of 68, he couldn’t help but curse at Bai Shao. “Damn it, are you even human?”
Unbothered, Bai Chengyu raised an eyebrow and subtly waved the red string tied to his wrist, mouthing, “My lucky charm.”
Wang Ziheng reached for his hand to examine it closely. “Where did you get it? I’m going there next time to get one, too.”
Bai Chengyu quickly pulled his hand back, refusing to let him touch or even take a proper look. Smirking arrogantly, he teased, “Not telling you.” His expression was downright infuriating.
The classroom filled with envious and jealous glances from all directions. However, one particular gaze was especially hostile.
Xue Bingsheng had also been checking his scores under the desk. He had lost five points on the essay question. His response had been straight from the textbook—how could it be marked wrong? Glaring resentfully at Bai Chengyu, he couldn’t hide his unwillingness to accept the results.
