Chapter Index

Chi Qingzhou dialed the local Dao Association’s phone number while the system was frozen in a glitch.

He reported the Wan Ying Temple thoroughly and then quickly called the police, reporting the case.

Once the police heard it was a murder case, they took it very seriously. They asked for the specific address and reminded Chi Qingzhou to stay safe.

“Don’t act rashly, wait for us in a safe place. We will be there soon!”

Chi Qingzhou promised and hung up the phone. He took another look at the Wan Ying Temple.

The group of restless ghosts seemed to be celebrating, swirling around a blurry soul. The soul was being torn apart, with wounds all over its body, and it no longer had the strength to scream.

If this continued, the soul would be scattered.

Chi Qingzhou put away his phone and tapped the three ghostly creatures he was holding.

    “Go knock on the door.”

The three ghostly creatures immediately perked up. “Yes, my lord!”

They quickly turned and floated over to the temple gate, standing outside, hands on their hips, cursing their fellow spirits inside with high-pitched voices.

“You bunch of scoundrels, you’re about to die! It’s a miracle you don’t have a graves and can’t be reincarnated. Otherwise, you’d have been reborn as animals! Stop messing around, hurry up and come out to greet the lord!”

The noise inside the Wan Ying Temple paused for two seconds before bursting into harsh laughter.

“Oh, it’s Fang Naokui and the others coming back.”

“Fang Naokui (Square head),what’s wrong with you? Why’s your head round now?”

“Did you handle the task? If you did, we’ll go collect the second payment tomorrow.”

“Hahaha, payment, payment, it’s been so long since I’ve tasted fresh flesh. Little girls’ flesh is the best~”

“Eh, where’s my clay tablet for recording? Where did that man’s cousin live?”

None of the ghosts inside took the three creatures seriously.

They laughed and searched around for the stone tablets.

The three ghosts were embarrassed and afraid that Chi Qingzhou would scold them for not doing their job properly. They immediately started yelling at their fellow spirits inside the temple.

The system, however, had a different focus.

【Cousin? Is that the daughter of Ma Xiayang’s uncle? Does this mean Ma Xiayang used his cousin’s life as a price for his wish?】

The system was confused. If that was the case, how did Ma Xiayang die? Shouldn’t these ghosts be looking for his niece?

Chi Qingzhou spoke in a calm tone, “Ma Xiayang’s wish had ten targets. He only paid with one life, Wan Ying Temple wouldn’t make such a losing deal.”

The system thought for a moment. 【Host, so you mean that although Ma Xiayang planned to use his cousin’s life as payment, that wasn’t enough?】

【Wan Ying Temple and he made an agreement, not officially stated, but after completing one of the wishes, they killed him immediately?】

    Chi Qingzhou nodded.

【Ugh.】 The system almost wanted to shake its head. 【He had ten targets, two lives probably aren’t enough.】

【Since he made those wishes, did he and his family get put on the death list?】

For example, Ma Xiayang’s uncle’s family, who had a poor relationship with Ma Xiayang, but was still related by blood.

Chi Qingzhou did not answer, clearly tacitly agreeing.

The system clicked its tongue, changing its view of Ma Xiayang from foolish to foolish and poisonous.

The cursing at the temple gate continued.

The three ghosts were furious and shouted insults, but they dared not enter.

They had just been reprimanded by Chi Qingzhou and their souls were injured, making them no match for other ghosts.

There were too many spirits in the temple, and if they went in, once their malice was discovered, they’d likely be torn apart.

Halfway through the cursing, the three ghosts began to regret it.

They had brought Chi Qingzhou here to involve their fellow ghosts, but Chi Qingzhou kept standing far away, refusing to step in. They didn’t want to face them on their own.

But they dared not back out.

After being in the same temple for so long, who didn’t know who was capable?

These ghosts looked fierce, but they were no match for Chi Qingzhou.

If they backed out now, they would be annihilated!

The three ghosts, caught in a dilemma, didn’t want Chi Qingzhou to think they were slacking off, so they raised their voices even louder, using the harshest words to poke at the fellow ghosts inside.

At first, the ghosts in the Wan Ying Temple just thought Fang Naokui and the others were dissatisfied.

They were Yin creatures, who hated the sun. Being called out to work during the day was surely unpleasant, so they cursed a bit—no big deal.

But as Fang Naokui and the others hit more painful spots, the ghosts inside the temple couldn’t take it anymore.

One ghost, more solid than the others and larger in size, showed a sinister expression. “Fang Naokui, what are you playing at? Don’t tell me you’ve got other plans?”

The three ghosts laughed sharply. “What other plans? We already told you the lord has arrived, but you didn’t listen!”

“A bunch of fools, daring to ignore the majesty of the lord. Just wait!”

What lord? Where did this lord come from?

The large ghost’s face changed, and it coldly glanced at them before tearing Ma Xiayang’s soul with a sharp motion.

Ma Xiayang screamed in pain, bending down sharply, struggling a few times before collapsing again, his soul barely holding on.

The large ghost wore a cruel smile and swaggered out of the Wan Ying Temple.

“What lord? Let me see what kind of thing it is!”

The three ghosts sneered inwardly, cursing out loud but not intending to stop the large ghost.

They actually hoped this guy would get punished by Chi Qingzhou just like they did.

Chi Qingzhou stepped out from beneath the tree’s shadow, and his shadow on the ground expanded into a massive form with each of his steps.

    The moonlight grew even brighter.

The large ghost glanced at the moon, feeling inexplicably dizzy.

Was it the moonlight that was too bright tonight?

It felt strange as if it had drunk too much.

Shaking its head in confusion, it looked away, and the next moment, a sharp whistle burst from its chest.

A flood of shadows surged toward it. It tried to run, but its entire soul felt as though it had been filled with dozens of pounds of liquid, already “drunk” and unable to tell east from west!

It thought it had turned around and rushed toward the Wan Ying Temple, which should have protected it. But in reality, the opposite happened.

The massive shadow engulfed it completely, and it felt like a piece of lard tossed into a hot iron pot, melting instantly.

Even though it had already lost its body, it felt as though it had grown bones and organs again in that moment.

The immense pressure was like a fine mesh strainer, crushing its bones and organs bit by bit.

For a few seconds, it even wondered if it had turned into a mush of chicken in broth, with the incense smoke on it being the essence that permeated the soup—delicious and nutritious, praised by anyone who tasted it.

Before it completely lost consciousness, it never saw who the “lord” the three ghosts mentioned actually was.

    But he even eats ghosts…

    So brutal!

Chi Qingzhou slowly spat, “What a strange taste.”

It was almost like a pair of leather shoes seasoned with barbecue sauce. He wasn’t sure whether it was an insult to the barbecue seasoning or to the leather shoes.

The system spoke nervously: 【Host, how do you know leather shoe’s taste? Have you eaten them?】

Chi Qingzhou gave the system a silent glance but didn’t respond.

The system hesitated, realizing its question wasn’t quite appropriate, and quickly changed its tone: 【Ah, not that. I meant, didn’t you promise the police to stay in a safe place?】

How did you suddenly come face-to-face with the ghosts in the temple?

Chi Qingzhou tilted his head slightly. “Yes, I didn’t go inside.”

He was still standing in a safe place.

    Isn’t that enough?

The system stammered, not daring to argue.

Chi Qingzhou didn’t press the issue, glancing at the suddenly quiet Wan Ying Temple and asking, “What is Su-Ge doing? Why hasn’t he spoken?”

The system replied awkwardly: 【I… I don’t know. Mr. Xing just detached the incense from them, then disappeared somewhere.】

    Chi Qingzhou: “Is that so?”

The system didn’t understand his tone, so it just answered repeatedly.

    Chi Qingzhou smiled faintly.

He stopped paying attention to the system and waved at the three ghostly creatures, signaling them to continue knocking on the door.

The three ghosts, who had witnessed the death of their fellow, didn’t dare slack off. They forced their trembling souls to step forward and taunt the others again.

But this time, none of the ghosts inside responded.

The three ghosts, desperate, switched to even more vicious language, but to no effect.

They didn’t like being taunted like this, but they were even more afraid of dying.

It was better to stay inside the temple and pretend to know nothing than to make those three beings shut up.

These ghosts had been hiding under the Dao Association’s nose for so long, they knew better than to show their cards.

So, despite the three ghosts’ incessant cursing, none of the ghosts dared to step out of the Wan Ying Temple.

The three ghosts were near desperation.

They didn’t want to die and didn’t dare to resent Chi Qingzhou, so they deeply hated the fellow ghosts hiding inside the temple who wouldn’t come out.

Their eyes, like venomous snakes, constantly glared at their companions in the temple. They were itching to act, even thinking of rushing inside and forcibly dragging them out to finish the task.

But they knew the temple was filled with too many ghosts, and going in wouldn’t necessarily end well. Both sides were at a stalemate.

Chi Qingzhou found it very interesting. He stood with his arms crossed, watching for a while before slowly speaking.

“Isn’t anyone willing to come out?”

The three ghosts shuddered, forced smiles on their faces, and promised to bring one out immediately.

Chi Qingzhou ignored them, his gaze falling on the now silent Wan Ying Temple, his expression pure and innocent as he smiled.

“Really, no one wants to come out and talk with me? If not, I’ll go in.”

The main hall of the Wan Ying Temple erupted in an instant, with the ghosts panicking and yelling at each other.

Chi Qingzhou’s smile grew even gentler.

He spoke in a tone almost coaxing, “I just want to have a chat. No ill intentions. If one of you comes out, I won’t go in. How about it?”
