BPDSB Chapter 11: “Check Xu Xiliu’s background.”
by justmistyIn the villa’s study, the man stood in front of the window, quietly gazing out at the mountain scenery.
The mountain landscape was fresh and pleasant, with birds chirping and pine trees swaying like waves. The villa, located halfway up the mountain, from this angle, through the layers of green hills, just happened to overlook the bustling city below.
The traffic looked like rows of ants marching in formation, and the dense high-rises in the city center were like carefully arranged blocks. The glass curtain walls reflected white light, and even from such a distance, the brilliance of the city still caught the eye unexpectedly.
Qin Li’s gaze was fixed steadily on the tallest of those shining buildings.
The sunlight was just right, casting a golden edge on the man’s tall figure, yet he seemed completely isolated from that warmth. A chilling coldness surrounded him, and a fierce glint churned deep within his dark eyes.
After a while, Qin Li pulled the curtains closed, returned to his chair, and rubbed the space between his brows.
The villa was quiet. Compared to the previous hustle and bustle of the coming and going of servants, the new people were far more measured and would not easily approach the man’s living quarters. Outside was calm and still, not even the sound of footsteps could be heard, making the entire building seem even more desolate and lifeless.
However, compared to the previous noise, this current silence was more to Qin Li’s liking.
At the very least, he could find a sense of security in it.
A laughable sense of security from not being spied on.
Qin Li’s lips curved into a sarcastic, cold smile.
It had taken some time, but he had finally cleared out all the eyes planted in the villa during his bouts of mental instability, and replaced them with his own people. Qin Li was quite satisfied.
Although he was down and out, he had not fallen to the point of having to swallow his anger and tread carefully even in his own home.
His uncle had stretched his hand too far.
So greedy. Had he thought about what ending awaited him?
Qin Li thought darkly, imagining the reaction from the people back at the old residence once news from here reached them.
Ever since he was thrown here, the old residence had been completely taken over by his uncle. The old man was aged and no longer capable, easily deceived. And he, the once glamorous heir, had been cast aside the moment he fell ill, as if a layer of ash had immediately covered him, branded as useless and thoroughly discarded.
At first, he was still seen as a threat in his uncle’s eyes. The man often used the spies planted in the villa to monitor his condition. Later, perhaps seeing that he was in poor shape and always dazed, the uncle relaxed his guard. During this period, the man barely inquired about him.
Only occasionally did he ask through his spies, and upon receiving answers that he could stir no trouble, he was satisfied to let him be. He believed the threat was diminishing and focused all his attention on the Qin Corporation, hoping to replace him as heir and swallow up the massive entity that was the Qin family.
All of this Qin Li learned from the steward who had been drugging him.
The man confessed all his deeds after being bought off by his uncle. As for what followed, Qin Li learned through his own people within the Qin Corporation.
The other side truly wanted him dead.
Qin Li let out a cold laugh, looking forward to seeing the other man’s panic once this news reached the old residence.
Although that scene would likely not be visible. Qin Li tapped his knuckles on the table, the crisp sound echoing faintly, slightly eerie. He had made his purge quietly, with a suitable excuse, everything swift and silent. By the time his uncle truly realized, it would probably be long after the fact. But he did not mind letting the other party find out in another way.
He had been lying low long enough. It was time for some people to taste what he had endured.
Qin Li thought this, eyes filled with cold darkness, flashing with a devouring chill.
Suddenly, a shrill alarm rang out, the noisy and clamorous sound seemingly about to pierce through the roof, “ring ring ring” merging into a continuous din.
Qin Li’s thoughts were instantly interrupted.
He stared for a while at the foolish-looking husky dog-head-shaped alarm clock in the corner of his desk, then expressionlessly reached out and grabbed it, hurling it to the side.
The alarm clock, now smashed to the floor, was remarkably resilient, still ringing away with its relentless “ring ring.”
The tilted dog head on the floor, with its overly energetic googly eyes staring in Qin Li’s direction, was inexplicably infuriating.
Amid the annoying alarm, Qin Li shut his eyes tightly, and in the end, was still forced to lower himself and go over personally to switch it off harshly.
The world fell silent in an instant.
The door of the study was knocked a few times, and Uncle Zhong’s voice came from outside, “Sir, it’s time to take your medicine.”
Qin Li ground his teeth, his expression extremely foul. After holding it in, he finally let out a barely audible snort from his nose. Outside, Uncle Zhong, as if he had ears sharp as the wind, actually heard it. He pushed open the door and came in, holding a bottle of medicine and a glass of warm water.
“Sir.”
He handed the items to Qin Li.
Qin Li glanced at them, reluctantly and with a sour face, took them.
Uncle Zhong stood quietly to the side. When his eyes landed on the alarm clock lying crooked and pitiful on the desk, he smiled slightly, reached out, and set it upright again. The husky dog head now sat properly, its googly eyes bulging wide, its face full of silliness and an inherent air of provocation.
Qin Li saw it and choked.
His face grew even darker with gloom.
Uncle Zhong said good-naturedly, “Doctor Xu’s method is actually quite good. It reminds you when it’s time to take your medicine.”
Qin Li snorted coldly, completely ungracious.
“Is that so? I don’t think so.”
His gaze swept over the alarm clock, then returned with impatience.
That extremely noisy and ugly dog head was something his idle private doctor had brought over one day. Probably because the other party had seen through his act of using him to purge people, that fox, who was very good at pretending but inherently sly, was unwilling to let him take advantage without retaliation. Though nothing was said outright, his actions clearly aimed at revenge in every way possible.
Who knows where he found this alarm clock—it looked hideous, and was particularly obnoxious. Once it rang, the sound could pierce from the third floor to the first. The problem was, no matter how it was smashed, it stayed intact. Its durability was almost uncanny.
At first, Qin Li had been so affected by the noise that he actually had the impulse to contact the manufacturer to ask what materials it was made from.
Expressionless, he gathered the medicine into his palm, intending to down it all in one go.
But before he could, Uncle Zhong stopped him.
Uncle Zhong smiled kindly and pushed the glass of water closer, explaining, “Doctor Xu said you should take them one by one with water. That way you won’t choke.”
Qin Li stiffened slightly at those words, his handsome face darkening even further. He stared at Uncle Zhong, his voice cold and teeth clenched:
“I didn’t realize you listened to him so well now.”
Uncle Zhong had watched Qin Li grow up and hoped more than anyone for his recovery. He also knew that the man’s temper had been worn down by life, so he wasn’t angry. He smiled with squinted eyes and said, “Doctor Xu is doing it for your own good. If you follow the doctor’s instructions and take your medicine on time, your health will get better.”
Qin Li felt a headache coming on and closed his eyes.
To avoid being nagged even more, he gave up resisting and followed the instructions.
In the process, he crushed two pills out of impatience and had to have them replaced by Uncle Zhong.
Watching the man finish a full glass of water, Uncle Zhong left in satisfaction, gently closing the study door behind him so as not to disturb Qin Li.
Once again, only Qin Li remained in the room, his expression flickering in the quiet space.
Was his private doctor getting a bit too nosy?
Qin Li wondered.
He had cleared out everyone in the villa, yet overlooked this private doctor who had been with him since the onset of his illness.
Unknowingly, the other party had gotten involved in his diet and medication habits.
Now, even with Uncle Zhong, he had somehow earned a strong reputation.
What exactly did he want?
At this thought, Qin Li narrowed his eyes dangerously.
A moment later, he made a phone call and gave an order:
“Look into Xu Xiliu’s background. Send it to me later.”
