HCILH Ch. 4
by camiChapter 4: Class Monitor
After Hou Mo got told off, his friend became agitated, instantly furious: “You’re asking for trouble, aren’t you?”
There were many athletes in this class, and their numbers made them feel powerful and confident. They stood up as if ready to fight.
Ran Shu wasn’t having it either and retorted: “Oh yeah? What are you gonna do?”
His attitude was just as aggressive—Ran Shu had never been afraid of such situations.
The homeroom teacher knocked on the desk and, in a surprisingly calm tone, said: “Do you think I’m dead or something?”
The athletes clearly feared the teacher, and they all obediently sat back down.
After all, this was their previous homeroom teacher.
Ran Shu sneered, secretly raised his middle finger at the one who was shouting, and stuck out his tongue in a mocking gesture.
His Brother Yu might not be able to fight a hundred people at once, but handling ten was no problem. So, who was afraid of whom?
Sui Houyu was used to Ran Shu’s behavior by now and didn’t stop him.
To others, it even seemed like Sui Houyu spoiled Ran Shu a little.
A few of the athletes sitting in front turned around dramatically, looked at Sui Houyu, and mumbled: “So that’s the famous Sui Houyu? I heard he was ugly, but he looks… kinda like a little milk bean.”
Another athlete added: “Yeah, he’s got a face you can’t stay mad at.”
Hou Mo, still smiling cheerfully, sat down and said loudly: “Teacher, I’m really well-behaved, but this classmate has a bad temper. I’m feeling so upset, boohoo.”
The teacher, a typical tough guy who couldn’t handle this exaggerated whining, replied coldly: “Cut the sarcasm.”
Hou Mo sighed: “Don’t worry, I won’t cause trouble.”
He seemed to be giving the teacher some face.
It also made Sui Houyu look a bit petty.
The teacher knew Hou Mo well and remarked: “You should be in Class Ten with the other athletes. There’s no need for you to be in Class Seventeen.”
This statement revealed that Hou Mo was actually a top student.
Class Ten was the best science class.
Hou Mo’s voice was still low and lazy, with a grainy quality that made listeners’ ears tingle: “No special reason. I did well in the exam, but there’s no scholarship. I just don’t want to waste any ink.”
Even Hou Mo’s friends were exasperated: “Senior Brother, you’re frugal to a new extreme.”
Hou Mo grinned but didn’t respond.
The introductions continued, but they got stuck when it came to one person.
The person sitting next to Sang Xian said: “Teacher, Sang Xian fell asleep.”
The teacher couldn’t be bothered to wake him and simply said: “Next person.”
Once everyone finished introducing themselves, the teacher wrote his name on the blackboard: Ouyang Ge.
A compound surname[1].
It had a bit of a martial arts vibe.
But being called “Gege[2]” was rather amusing.
Just as Teacher Ouyang Ge was about to say something, a large group of people appeared at the door.
Leading them was a female teacher, bringing two directors who had previously worked at Fenghua School. She looked into the classroom, then pointed at Sui Houyu: “Director, that student used to be in my class. I can vouch that his hair is naturally curly.”
This was Teacher Li, a beautiful and classy woman, the homeroom teacher Sui Houyu had at Qingyu High School.
One of the directors adjusted his glasses and looked at Sui Houyu: “Can we ask him to cut his hair shorter?”
Teacher Li sighed: “Better not. He tried short hair before, and it was terrible. It looked like worms were crawling all over his head.”
Sui Houyu was so shocked by this description that he started coughing, suddenly feeling awful about himself.
Ran Shu was equally horrified: “Sister Ling! Could you not describe it like that?!”
Upon seeing Ran Shu, Teacher Li told Ouyang Ge: “You should set up a separate desk for Ran Shu next to the podium. Otherwise, he’ll cause trouble for the whole class.”
Ran Shu protested loudly, but after one look from Teacher Li, he immediately formed a heart shape above his head with his arms.
Hou Mo heard his friend mumbling: “His hair’s naturally curly? I thought it was permed. How does it curl into brackets like that? Amazing.”
“Isn’t it styled with hair wax?”
“His hair looks so light and floaty—no wax, just natural curls.”
“Damn… Good-looking people can even pull off natural curls.”
Hou Mo laughed at that.
After watching Teacher Li leave, Ouyang Ge opened his notebook, ready to announce some things about the school’s merger. Halfway through, Teacher Li returned, this time with the principal, formally introducing Sui Houyu’s naturally curly hair to the principal.
Sui Houyu’s expression went blank—he felt like he was being shown off like a monkey.
As the introduction continued, a student from Class Ten rushed over to Teacher Li and said: “Teacher! You accidentally broadcasted through our class’s speakers. We heard everything you said.”
“Oh, oh, I’ll be right back.” Teacher Li quickly muted the mic.
Ouyang Ge sighed, searching his notebook for where he left off, and casually remarked: “The blond kid at the back of the class—your hair’s naturally blond, right?”
Hou Mo corrected: “Teacher, it’s ash-colored.”
“Does it make a difference?”
Hou Mo’s friend chimed in: “Don’t make it hard for Gege. He doesn’t even have a girlfriend. If he can’t tell lipstick shades apart, how could he tell hair colors?”
Ouyang Ge clicked his tongue and looked at Sui Houyu. After making eye contact, he continued: “Sui Houyu, right?”
He had Sui Houyu’s file in front of him, reading through it quickly.
After learning that Sui Houyu was in his class, Teacher Li had taken special care to explain how unique he was to Ouyang Ge—basically forcing a ten-minute briefing on him.
Sui Houyu responded with a simple “Mm.”
Ouyang Ge said: “You’ll be the class monitor.”
“I refuse.” Sui Houyu replied immediately.
He hated trouble the most and was unwilling to do anything. He had never been a class cadre since he was a child.
“You won’t have to do much—just handle discipline. If you sleep during class, the whole class can sleep with you. If you don’t sleep, no one else can.”
Then, pointing at Ran Shu, Ouyang Ge asked: “Ran Shu, right?”
Ran Shu quickly replied: “Yes.”
“You’ll be the deputy class monitor. Help Sui Houyu. If anyone misbehaves, you yell at them.”
Ran Shu was momentarily stunned, then nodded, quite pleased.
This teacher had a bit of a mischievous side.
Sui Houyu had mania and is full of energy. He only slept about five hours a day, never during the day.
Letting Ran Shu yell at people would definitely drive them crazy.
Ouyang Ge continued: “Hou Mo, you’ll be the academic representative.”
Hou Mo was taken aback: “Isn’t this a little too much?”
Ouyang Ge replied: “You’re in charge of collecting assignments from the athletes. If they don’t hand them in, I’ll hold you accountable.”
The athletes groaned in unison. They were starting to think there was something deeper going on here, though they weren’t sure what. All of them looked to Sui Houyu and Ran Shu for answers.
After assigning the other roles, Ouyang Ge said: “In a bit, the class monitor can collect everyone’s name list and clothing sizes. For the last column, write down your previous school.”
Since the schools had merged, new uniforms would be distributed.
Qingyu students would get Fenghua’s sports uniforms, while Fenghua students would receive Qingyu’s formal uniforms.
Sui Houyu didn’t want to do it, but Ran Shu eagerly went to get the list—he loved having a title.
Sui Houyu decided to leave the task to Ran Shu.
He planned to talk to the homeroom teacher later and resign from the class monitor position.
Just then, a loud wail came from the neighboring classroom, and someone even started shouting.
Ouyang Ge listened for a moment and said: “It seems the other class just found out the news.”
Ran Shu, curious, asked: “What news?”
Ouyang Ge gave a little warning: “No causing trouble.”
Hou Mo caught on after exchanging a glance with Ouyang Ge. He coughed lightly and said: “No causing trouble.”
This warning was aimed at the athletes he knew well, adding an extra layer of stability.
The atmosphere in the class became more and more tense.
“The school has arranged for you to undergo five days of military training with the freshmen.” Ouyang Ge finally revealed.
Despite being somewhat prepared, the class still erupted in disbelief: “What?!”
“We just finished military training in first year, and now we have to do it again in second year?”
After finally quieting them down, Ouyang Ge continued: “The freshmen will train for two weeks. You’ll only do five days, which will help you get to know each other and build team spirit. You didn’t do your first-year training with your current classmates, did you?”
Ran Shu, so flustered he could hardly speak, said: “I don’t care about getting to know them or team spirit—this is unreasonable!”
Hou Mo agreed: “This is unnecessary and a waste of time.”
Ouyang Ge ignored their protests and told Sui Houyu: “Sui Houyu, record the clothing sizes for the uniforms. The school will issue camo short sleeves.”
Sui Houyu reached out, grabbed the form, and tore it up, scattering the pieces casually into the air. The fragments fluttered down, a relaxed gesture that sharply contrasted with the tense atmosphere.
The athletes, who usually didn’t get along with Sui Houyu, surprisingly started to whistle.
Ouyang Ge looked at the students and suddenly smiled.
As soon as he smiled, the athletes fell silent.
Ouyang Ge then said: “I forgot to introduce myself. I’m the P.E. teacher, and I’m also in charge of the school’s special training program. My main focus is Sanda. If you’ve got any issues, we can settle them in the Sanda training room.”
One of the athletes quietly reminded Sui Houyu: “Dude, our P.E. teachers here have won competitions. They’re not bluffing.”
Sui Houyu ignored it.
Hou Mo suddenly spoke quietly to Sui Houyu, “Oh, and by the way, Gege is also the director of the school’s Moral Education Department. When he’s free, he likes to sit in the last row of the classroom, sometimes for the whole day. He might even end up being your deskmate.”
Ran Shu, thinking he had secured the best seat, was suddenly startled and widened his eyes at Hou Mo.
Even Sui Houyu looked shocked, glancing at Hou Mo in surprise.
Then they both looked back at Ouyang Ge, realizing that they probably weren’t joking.
This teacher seemed like a real challenge.
Ouyang Ge raised his hand and handed out another form. Ran Shu looked back at Sui Houyu, got up to take the form, and walked back with a sigh—a sign of a compromise.
