PSY CH 50
by LuluHe slowly ran his tongue along the inside of his cheek. For some reason, his mood shifted instantly. Even though he was the one who had a deeper relationship with Jooyoung, why did it bother him so much that Hangyeol had only exchanged a few texts with him?
Sex with Jooyoung had been unquestionably satisfying… but now, he felt something was missing, something unsatisfying. Watching Hangyeol texting Jooyoung only made it worse.
“Oh, that’s Uncle Hansoo.”
“Where?”
“Wow, he looks pissed off.”
The futsal court was built a few years ago when a park was developed along the stream. However, located at the far end of the park, near the road leading out to the town, it was always sparsely populated—there wasn’t much around except a convenience store and a gas station. The court and sports field had been built far from where most people lived, which was why people still had mixed feelings about it.
Seeing Hansoo suddenly appear there, everyone wore intrigued expressions.
“Joon’s dad! I’ll drive. Please don’t be like this. Okay?”
“Move! What the hell are you driving for!”
Not far off, a car with headlights on was parked. Hansoo roughly pushed a struggling woman aside and tried to get into the driver’s seat, but she kept stopping him.
“Do it while I’m still telling you nicely — get out of my way. I said get out!”
“No, no, Joon’s dad!”
“Damn it! Move!”
“Ouch!”
Hansoo didn’t just shove the woman hanging onto his waist—he went further and kicked her with his foot. The woman tumbled over, unable even to pull down her flipped-up skirt properly, crawling on her knees as she clung desperately to his leg.
“Wasn’t his license suspended?”
Junwoo, watching the scuffle, tilted his head.
“I heard he got caught driving to Busan not long ago.”
“I think so.”
“It’s a bad habit, that guy.”
Though they cursed Hansoo, no one stepped in to stop him. It was just a familiar scene for them—Hansoo’s violence and the woman getting hit.
“Was this funny to you?”
Dohyun frowned at the voice that suddenly popped into his mind. Back then, it had been the same. Everyone just stood back and watched; no one intervened. Only Jooyoung had pushed through the crowd to take care of Arin.
“For Joon’s sake, argh—!”
The woman got kicked again and fell into a messy heap. Hansoo opened the driver’s side door. Staggering, he grabbed the door frame to steady himself and yelled furiously at the woman.
“You walk, damn it… how dare you blocking the path in front of your honorable husband like the sky itself!”
His booming voice echoed loudly, and Dohyun put his phone down. Just as he slid back his chair to stand up…
“Uncle Hansoo! Enough already!”
Before anyone knew it, Hangyeol rushed forward and stood in front of the woman to block Hansoo.
Dohyun gripped the armrest and froze in place.
“Enough already!”
Hansoo, who had raised his hand into the air, faltered at Hangyeol’s sudden appearance. Though he had stood proudly with his shoulders back in front of the woman, before a younger man like Hangyeol, he lost his bravado and visibly shrank.
“Hangyeol, why… are you butting in?”
“Are you okay, Auntie?”
Hangyeol ignored Hansoo and turned to the woman who was now sitting on the ground. Her face was a mess of tears and sweat. Dirt was smeared around a fresh scratch on the nape of her neck, likely a mark caused by Hansoo’s shoe.
“Ugh… t-that’s… Hah!”
Hansoo, clearly unsettled, turned pale when he saw Dohyun approaching.
Dohyun stood in front of Hansoo. Outmatched both in height and build, Hansoo shrank like a candle flame flickering in the wind.
“Are you trying to drive?”
Dohyun grabbed the door frame. Hansoo, leaning on the door, staggered but managed to steady himself.
“Drive? No-no way!”
“Uncle! I saw everything. Auntie tried to stop you, but you kept trying to drive.”
Hangyeol, supporting the woman, cut in. Hansoo jumped up and wildly waved his hands around.
“No. I didn’t”
Hansoo, who just moments ago had tried to get into the driver’s seat, shamelessly lied, saying none of this ever happened. Every time he spoke, a strong smell of alcohol wafted from his breath.
“Auntie, do you need to go to the hospital?”
“Hangyeol, she’s faking it! It’s all an act!”
“Argh, uncle, cut it out!”
Hangyeol, annoyed, was fixing the hem of the woman’s dress when Hansoo snapped his mouth shut again and just rolled his eyes.
“The car keys.”
“Huh?”
Seeing the confused reaction, Dohyun leaned over, holding the door frame, and glanced inside the car. The keys were lying all alone next to the gear shift.
“Come out.”
“Huh? Oh, okay.”
“…”
“Dohyun, a-are you going to drive?”
Hansoo stepped back, flustered, and asked belatedly. Meanwhile, Dohyun got into the driver’s seat, Hangyeol put the woman in the back seat, and then got in the passenger seat himself. Realizing the situation was going strangely, Hansoo hurried to the back seat.
Click. But no matter how hard he pulled the handle, the locked door wouldn’t open.
“D-Dohyun ah?”
“…”
“Huh?”
Not knowing what to do, he anxiously circled around the trunk and went to the passenger side. Still, Hangyeol hoped that maybe he could reason with Hansoo a little.
“Uncle, I’m going to take the car to the police station.”
Hansoo’s face froze in shock at the bright tone that didn’t fit the situation.
“Hangyeol ah! What are you two doing!”
“I’m just worried you’ll try to drive.”
“I’m not driving!”
Watching Hansoo stomp his feet, Hangyeol sighed with a pitying expression and said, “Yeah, I don’t believe you.” Then the window whirred up. Hansoo hammered on the glass, but the car left him behind.
“Auntie, are you really sure you don’t want to go to the hospital?”
Hangyeol turned his body toward the back seat and checked on the woman.
“I-I’m okay.”
“…”
“I’m not sure if it’s okay to leave Joon’s dad like that. His leg isn’t good either…”
Hangyeol couldn’t understand how the woman could still be worried about her husband, even after all those beatings. So, he muttered, “His leg looked fine to me, though.”
“Jung Hangyeol.”
Dohyun warned him in a low tone. Hangyeol pouted, “I mean, it just doesn’t make sense,” but Dohyun ignored him.
Driving down a quiet road, the car soon entered the city. While they were stopped at a red light, Dohyun pulled his shirt down and slipped his arm through the sleeve. The sweat-soaked fabric clung damply to his skin.
“Sorry for dragging you both into such an embarrassing mess because of me, Gyeol-ah, Dohyun-ah.”
“What for? Uncle Hansoo’s the one who messed up.”
“…He’s fine when he’s not drinking. Don’t be too harsh on him.”
As the woman still insisted on defending Hansoo, Hangyeol turned his body away sharply, a sulky look on his face.
“Ugh, seriously! This makes me regret helping. All because of you, Auntie.”
“I wasn’t blaming you two. I just… I’m worried, that’s all…”
“Which is basically the same thing, isn’t it?”
The light changed, and the car started moving again.
“I helped out because of something I felt when I saw Jooyoung-i hyung, but all you’re doing is killing the mood.”
“Jung Hangyeol.”
“I mean, Hwangdo.”
“Stop it.”
Hangyeol, who had been rambling to himself, immediately shut up. The car fell silent in an instant. The woman apologized a few more times, then eventually fell quiet, staring blankly out the window with a tired look in her eyes.
“…”
With his chin resting on his hand, Dohyun glanced at the passenger seat. Hangyeol, as if he’d never sulked in the first place, was grinning again as he texted someone. Even without asking, it was obvious who he was talking to.
“Yes! Jooyoung-i hyung said he’s coming to our restaurant this weekend!”
Dohyun’s hand flinched on the steering wheel. He scratched his chin with his index finger and asked casually, pretending not to care. His eyes stayed fixed on the road.
“When this weekend?”
“Sunday!”
Completely oblivious to the fact that Dohyun had just asked something uncharacteristic of him, Hangyeol beamed with excitement.
“…”
A faint wrinkle formed between Dohyun’s brows.
Hangyeol had been pressured by his parents into helping out at the restaurant. He didn’t particularly enjoy the work, so he never invited people over unless it was a really close friend. Despite his friendly personality, he had his boundaries.
“Oh yeah, Hwangdo, hyung has dimples, did you know?”
“…”
“They show right here when he smiles.”
Jooyoung’s dimples were long and shallow, only appearing when he smiled widely. That meant Hangyeol had seen him really smile.
Suddenly, it felt like something was stuck in his chest. All Dohyun had after futsal was a sports drink, but this discomfort felt like indigestion.
“…He’s coming on Sunday.”
Muttering to himself, Dohyun pressed the tip of his middle finger’s nail with his thumb—hard, over and over. He didn’t even notice the pain, not until the skin turned red, not until the soft pink flesh underneath was exposed.
