When he arrived at the CEO’s office, Simon Kim was looking at something on his computer. He only turned his gaze when Euihyun greeted him first.

    “Ah, you’re here?”

“Yes. I was told you called for me.”

“First, could you wait over there?”

He gestures toward the sofa with his chin, his eyes returning to the monitor. He remained fixed in his seat until the secretary brought drinks.

After a considerable time, he finally came and sat at the head of the table, taking a breath.

“Ha. So, how was the first shoot?”

“There were a lot of action scenes, so I was nervous, but thankfully, it went smoothly.”

“I heard the director was very satisfied?”

He glances at Park Hanyoung as he speaks. It seemed he had already received a report on the situation at the set.

“It was my first time, so I think he was just being encouraging.”

“Euihyun, your modesty is charming, but too much of it is no fun, you know.”

At the playful chiding, Euihyun lets out an embarrassed laugh. Simon Kim doesn’t stop there, adding, “the era of the goody-two-shoes is over.” Euihyun’s expression becomes even more ambiguous. He looked so flustered that, if left alone, he seemed about to apologize. Unable to watch any longer, Park Hanyoung intervened.

“By the way, what did you call us for today?”

“Ah, Manager Park, could you run a quick errand for me?”

    “Yes?”

“It’s almost dinner time, isn’t it? There’s a pretty decent Thai restaurant near here. I was hoping we could get a few things and eat together.”

Simon Kim added, looking at his wristwatch. Open displeasure appeared on Park Hanyoung’s face.

    “Doesn’t that place deliver?”

“The one thing that’s a shame about that place is that they don’t deliver.”

    “There are secretaries outside…”

“They’re not there to run such trivial errands. Mistaking a secretary’s true role is a big mistake.”

He conveniently forgot that he was the one who, last time, forgot that very role and asked for the same errand. At his blatant behavior, Park Hanyoung momentarily lost his words.

“Besides, I’m quite busy these days. I have a lot of work to take care of before my departure.”

“Then why don’t you go together and eat there? The food will get cold while it’s being brought here.”

“If I had the time to go back and forth, do you think I would be asking for this favor? Knowing you would hate it.”

He replies nonchalantly and holds out his card. Park Hanyoung doesn’t immediately accept it. Euihyun, awkwardly caught between the two, stretches out both hands.

    “I’ll go.”

But before his hands could reach the card, it was withdrawn.

“No, where in the world is there a manager who, because they’re inconvenienced, sends their artist instead? Moreover, doesn’t Manager Park know Euihyun’s preferences best?”

Since he was stubbornly insisting, there was no way to avoid it any longer. Park Hanyoung let out a long sigh and snatched the card. He then said, “I’ll be back,” and left without even taking their orders.

“Now, Euihyun and I are finally alone.”

“Ah, was there something in particular you wanted to talk about…?”

“Not necessarily, but I wanted to have a frank conversation, this and that. Aren’t you tired? You haven’t had any rest since <Salieri> ended, and now you’ve gone straight into a new project.”

    “I’m still enjoying it.”

“Your eyes are sparkling. Do you enjoy acting that much?”

Simon Kim shook his head as if he couldn’t understand. Euihyun just smiled in response without saying anything. Sometimes, he seemed like a perpetually new actor. No matter how desperate one was for something, if it became frequent and familiar, one would naturally become complacent, but he showed no such signs. Not just because he was his actor, but such diligence was an example to anyone.

Simon Kim clapped his hands once and then delivered unexpected news.

“I have some good news. It will be reported widely soon, but <Salieri> has been invited to the Berlin Film Festival. They say the chances of winning an award are quite high.”

    “Ah… That’s great.”

“Is that all you have to say? Anyone would think it’s someone else’s work.”

“I never imagined it, and I can’t believe it.”

“It’ll gradually sink in as things get more lively. The film festival starts in early February, so we’ll leave for Berlin around the 5th. Of course, Yiljoo and Director Park will also be attending. If we actually win an award, a long-term screening will become possible.”

He nodded diligently. However, he was still bewildered. Berlin, Venice, Cannes. Names he had encountered countless times before becoming an actor, but he thought he would never have a connection to them in his lifetime. Of course, it wasn’t surprising that Director Park’s film was receiving attention. The same went for Cha Yiljoo. It was just that the fact that he himself would be there with them seemed like a dream. Maybe it really was a dream.

His heart fluttered uncontrollably. However, the following conversation regarding Cha Yiljoo’s future plans instantly brought his heart crashing down.

“After the film festival, Yiljoo will also have to make a decision. Whether to focus on overseas activities as before, or to also work domestically. Last year, he specifically wanted to focus on domestic projects, and since it’s only been about a year, it wasn’t a significant gap in his filmography, so I allowed it. But due to the company’s circumstances, we can’t keep doing that. You understand, right, Euihyun?”

    “Yes. Of course.”

He quickly answered. He had already prepared himself for this. He knew all too well that Cha Yiljoo would eventually return to his place. It was something he had heard even before their feelings became mutual, and it was a predictable course of action, even without that. There was a wider stage waiting for him, so there was no reason for him to be tied down domestically.

But why was his heart suddenly feeling so heavy? It felt like a heavy lump of iron had fallen into his calm inner world.

Would he return to the same life as before? Until the year before last, the number of times Cha Yiljoo had entered the country could be counted on one hand. He would often come to Korea for promotional activities ahead of the release of his films and return immediately after his schedule ended. While he was here, he would also film commercials and photoshoots that he had contracts for. This was why the past year had been particularly meaningful for his domestic fans.

If things returned to the way they were, how many times would he be able to see Cha Yiljoo? He would continue to be busy, and his own situation was different now. He could make time somehow, but it wouldn’t be easy to coordinate their schedules. And how far would the physical distance be?

“I’ll have to talk to Yiljoo properly, but I thought you should be aware of this.”

    “…Yes.”

“I don’t know what Yiljoo will say. He’s such an unpredictable guy. Last year, he suddenly showed up and unexpectedly announced that he wanted to do domestic activities. I’m also worried that he might just decide to settle down here. I also wonder if I’m separating people who have just started. As a friend and as a CEO, I don’t want Yiljoo to neglect his work.”

    “I also don’t want that…”

“But as family, I hope he finds a way to stay longer with the person he loves. Not something that requires sacrifice from one side.”

He nodded silently. True love doesn’t necessarily have to be blind. The thought of being far away from Cha Yiljoo already made him feel sad, but he didn’t want him to give up his career. The damage from that would be shared not only by the two of them but also by everyone in the company, including Simon Kim. What value would there be in love that requires someone’s sacrifice?

For now, no clear solution came to mind other than a long-distance relationship. They say out of sight, out of mind. There was no guarantee that wouldn’t happen with Cha Yiljoo. That anxiety stemmed not from distrust of him but from a lack of self-esteem.

He clasped his hands tightly together under the table. An awkward silence hung in the air for a moment. Simon Kim broke the silence and attempted to change the mood.

“By the way, let me ask you one thing.”

    “Yes, go ahead.”

    “Why do you like Yiljoo?”

At the blunt question, Euihyun’s eyes widen. It was a given that Simon Kim knew about their relationship. But it was still surprising to be asked so directly. It was also awkward that Cha Yiljoo and he were practically brothers. Euihyun’s ears turned red as he lowered his gaze to his hands.

    “Well…”

    “Well?”

Simon Kim leaned in close. Euihyun lowered his head and mumbled in a barely audible voice.

    “…Because he’s kind.”

Simon Kim’s face contorts slightly. He asks incredulously,

    “Who is?”

    “Huh? Yiljoo…”

Euihyun innocently confirmed it for him.

“Euihyun, are you sure you understand the meaning of ‘kind’?”

He asks, just in case. Euihyun looks genuinely confused. Simon Kim lets out a long sigh.

    “I’m sorry. It’s my fault.”

    “Why are you saying that…?”

“I think I meddled where I shouldn’t have. If I hadn’t provoked him with my so-called advice, Euihyun wouldn’t have been so easily smitten.”

Even though he sounded like he was joking, half of it seemed genuine, but Euihyun, oblivious, just smiled. Simon Kim stared at him for a moment before uttering cryptic words.

“But there was one after all.”

    “Huh?”

“Someone like Belle. I mocked him mercilessly, but with you, Euihyun, it makes sense, I guess? That annoying fellow actually found one.”

To Euihyun, it was still incomprehensible.

He couldn’t ask for further details because Park Hanyoung returned. Simon Kim immediately opened the bag he brought and grumbled that it didn’t contain his favorite dish. Ignoring him, Park Hanyoung let Euihyun choose first.

“Euihyun, which one do you want?”

    “……”

    “Euihyun?”

    “Ah, yes.”

He snaps back to attention. But, not having grasped the gist of the question, he asks, “What did you say?” Park Hanyoung tilted his head and looked at Simon Kim. Simon Kim just shrugged as if he didn’t know anything. When he looked at Euihyun’s face again, a previously absent worry had settled there.

The cafe inside the Chunghwa Ilbo building was still deserted. It was during peak working hours, and the number of people who usually frequented the place wasn’t high. Euihyun took a seat in a quiet corner. It seemed alright to order drinks together when Kim Jihee arrived.

He hadn’t been able to meet her outside of official settings, using being busy as an excuse. In fact, today was also a sort of interview. Although it wasn’t his intention, he felt heavy-hearted as he seemed to be increasingly neglecting those around him.

Unlike usual, he kept his eyes fixed on the elevators. Soon, one of them arrived at the lobby. The doors opened, and Kim Jihee, who had been waiting inside, appeared. Spotting Euihyun, she waved her hand enthusiastically with a welcoming expression.

    “Have you been waiting long?”

    “I just got here.”

“You always say you just got here. What should we do? It’s supposed to be an interview, so should we go up to the office? Or just do it here?”

    “I don’t mind either way.”

“Then let’s talk here. There’s no one around anyway, and what else is there to do upstairs besides sightseeing? Actor Jung would be bothered too. No need to cause trouble.”

Having made her decision, Kim Jihee headed to the counter. Euihyun quickly followed. Then, refusing Kim Jihee’s offer, he insisted on paying for both of their drinks. After receiving the drinks, he even inserted the straws for her.

“You’re not trying to get away with this, are you? I’m going to get you to buy me meals every time Actor Jung does well, you know.”

“Yes, I’ll buy you a meal.”

“Why are you so readily agreeing? Anyway, what were you doing before you came here?”

“I’m in the middle of filming a new project, so I just came from the set.”

“I heard that it cranked in. How is this project?”

    “I don’t know yet.”

“I also saw the outdoor photoshoot Actor Jung did recently; it was very sexy and well done. Who knew such masculinity could come from this innocent face, huh? Congratulations anyway! I knew Actor Jung would do well.”

    “…I just think I’m lucky.”

“Too much humility is a disease. Or is it that you’re not satisfied with this level of success? Do you need to become a global star to gain some confidence?”

Kim Jihee playfully scolded him. But it wasn’t empty talk.

Lately, he had been thinking from time to time. How low the probability was for someone to recognize his talent, how slim the chance was for someone he had unilaterally liked to reciprocate his feelings. How difficult it was to have a company and colleagues who were like true family, not just in words, and acquaintances who would roll up their sleeves and help him as if it were their own problem when something arose.

In reality, all of that was a fortune granted to him because he was Euihyun, and because of who Euihyun was. But he himself wouldn’t dream of thinking that way.

“In a way, I’m curious. If there really are people who don’t change.”

Kim Jihee murmured softly. When Euihyun looked at her questioningly, she dismissed it as if it were nothing.

“Just talking to myself. Okay, then, from now on, the trending man, Mr. Jung Euihyun. Let’s start the interview. Are you ready?”

She skillfully changed the topic and turned on the recorder. The purpose of today’s interview was to catch up on his recent activities. Therefore, the questions didn’t deviate from that. During the question-and-answer session, both of them remained true to their respective professions as actor and reporter. As they talked, an hour passed quickly. After finishing her prepared questions, Kim Jihee said, “Good job,” and turned off the recorder.

Immediately after, Euihyun’s phone screen lit up. Because he had switched it to silent mode during the interview, only the caller ID was displayed without any ringtone. It was Cha Yiljoo.

    “A call? Answer it.”

    “Just a moment, then.”

After asking for her understanding, he answered the call. As soon as he said, “Hello,” a question flew at him.

    — Euihyun, where are you?

    “I’m out for an interview.”

    — Will it take long?

    “No. It’s almost over, but what’s up…?”

    — Does something have to be up?

He chuckled mischievously. Euihyun touched the back of his head awkwardly.

    “…No, not really, but.”

    — Let’s have dinner together. I got a recommendation for a good restaurant.

    “Where are you now?”

    — I’ll come to you. Where’s the interview location?

“I brought my car too. It won’t take long if I drive.”

    — Then one of us will have to wait. Since Manager Han will be driving this car anyway, I’ll ask him to drop me off on the way. Let’s meet there.

“Then would you mind coming to the Chunghwa Ilbo building?”

    — You’re with Reporter Kim Jihee? It will take about 15 minutes. See you later.

    “Yes.”

A smile spread across Euihyun’s face as he ended the call. Watching him, Kim Jihee teased him playfully.

“Anyone would think you got a call from your lover.”

    “Huh? Ah, no…”

“You’re so unusual, really. Even if you’re in the same company and friends, to go that far out of your way? If you think about it, Cha Yiljoo practically saved Actor Jung when that rumor almost blew up. Did you save Cha Yiljoo’s life or something?”

Kim Jihee expressed pure curiosity. He smiled faintly and said no. He also took the opportunity to express his gratitude for the past incident.

“Thank you for what happened back then.”

    “Me? What did I do?”

“I heard you wrote the article and helped me a lot.”

“Oh, that’s what I should do. Whether it’s true or not, there are articles to write and articles not to write.”

She waved her hand as if embarrassed. Then she finished the rest of her drink and tidied up.

“It looks like you have an appointment, so go ahead. Let’s have a drink sometime.”

“Yes. I’ll definitely make time soon to treat you to a meal.”

    “I’ll remember that. Contact me.”

As if feeling apologetic about leaving first, she hesitated for a while. He gestured towards the exit, urging her to go. Only then did she hesitantly get up and bowed her head. She also said, “I’ll contact you again.”

As he was leaving the cafe, the phone rang again. Euihyun answered it immediately and busily explained his parking location. His legs were already half-running.

A faint chuckle escaped Kim Jihee’s lips. She then shook her head.

    “So over the top, really.”

As soon as he went down to the underground parking lot, he saw Cha Yiljoo. An undeniable look of joy appeared on Euihyun’s face. He strode toward his car. Sensing his presence, Cha Yiljoo turned his head.

    “Euihyun.”

    “You’re here?”

    “Did the interview go well?”

“Yes. Where are you coming from, Yiljoo?”

“I had a photoshoot. It’s almost rush hour, shall we talk on the way?”

He said yes and took out his keys. Cha Yiljoo suddenly grabbed his hand.

    “I’ll drive.”

“No, it’s my car, so I’ll drive.”

He insisted on driving, saying, “Please get in.” He thought it was common courtesy, but perhaps even that was a preconceived notion. Cha Yiljoo chuckled and obediently headed towards the passenger seat.

    “Where should I navigate to?”

“I’ve already set the restaurant address.”

Cha Yiljoo connected his phone to the car mount. After roughly checking the route, Euihyun started the engine and departed. They slowly exited the underground parking lot and entered the main road. The car had a surprisingly smooth ride for its age. It seemed to be due to Euihyun’s steady driving habits.

The road was congested with the approaching rush hour. He had to wait for at least three traffic light cycles to cross an intersection. Euihyun’s car had already missed the green light twice. While stopped, Cha Yiljoo glanced sideways at Euihyun’s right hand. Then he suddenly extended his left hand. Euihyun looked puzzled at the approaching hand.

    “Why…?”

Cha Yiljoo didn’t answer, only lightly shaking his hand up and down. He soon understood his intention. But how could he…?

    “I have to drive.”

“The light is quite long, isn’t it?”

    “……”

Certainly, he wasn’t driving at the moment, and there shouldn’t be any problem. Euihyun’s right hand left the steering wheel. As if awkward, his fingertips trembled slightly. He placed his hand on top of Cha Yiljoo’s. Cha Yiljoo grasped that hand as if wrapping it once, and then quickly interlocked their fingers one by one. Then, gently stroking the back of his hand with his thumb, he asked,

“What did you do before the interview?”

“I had a studio shoot today as well.”

“Ah, right. You must be tired.”

    “I’m fine.”

    “I’m fine too.”

    “…Huh?”

“I feel like I can’t even lift a finger, but when I meet you, Euihyun, I forget all about it. It’s strange.”

    “Ah…”

He throws a straight ball out of the blue. Every time he does this, Euihyun doesn’t know how to react. Saying “Me too” felt too daring, given what might follow, and saying “Thank you” felt decidedly strange. While he hesitated, the light changed. The cars ahead began to move slowly. He looked awkwardly at his hand, held by Cha Yiljoo. He couldn’t even bring himself to pull it away.

Surprisingly, Cha Yiljoo released Euihyun’s hand willingly. However, as soon as they stopped at the next light, he took his hand again.

“Are you preparing for your departure in your spare time?”

“Manager Park has taken care of most things. I only have to pack my bag.”

“Are you looking forward to it?”

“I have this fluttering feeling in my stomach. I think it’s a mix of anticipation and pressure.”

    “Cute.”

    “No…”

“Being invited to a film festival is definitely an honor and something to be happy about, but honestly, I don’t particularly enjoy attending them. There are too many cameras and too many people. But this time, since I’m going with Euihyun, it feels different. It feels like going on a trip. I check the date every day, wondering if it’s still far away. Let’s request the same hotel this time. It’s strange for us to stay separately when we’re on the same team.”

Certainly, staying at the same hotel would allow them to have meals together and enjoy more free time after their schedules ended. Thinking that way, it really did feel like he was about to go on a trip.

“No, should I just ask for the same room?”

Cha Yiljoo muttered abruptly. His gaze was directed away from Euihyun, making it sound like he was talking to himself. Nevertheless, it was heard very clearly. Euihyun noticeably stiffened. The movement of his arm controlling the steering wheel was like that of a robot. His head was fixed forward, while his ears turned red without a moment’s notice. Even after they had already had sex, he was still the same. Cha Yiljoo quietly turned his gaze towards the window. The corners of his mouth, hidden by his hand, formed a long, upward curve.

Eventually, they arrived near their destination. The restaurant’s parking lot was already full. It seemed they would have to use a private parking lot or park on the street.

In the end, they parked in a lot about a 7- or 8-minute walk from the restaurant. After locking the car, Cha Yiljoo, who had gotten out first and was waiting, immediately took his hand.

    “Uh, there…”

“It’ll be hard to see at night.”

Reassuring the worried Euihyun, he put their clasped hands into his coat pocket. Since both of their coats were in similar dark shades, it probably wouldn’t be noticeable unless someone looked very closely.

The area was lined with restaurants, cafes, and bars. As such, there were many cars and people. It wasn’t the parking but this very fact that proved to be the problem, which he only realized after the incident unfolded. The passersby who had brushed past them began to turn around one by one. Some stopped in their tracks, glancing at them or stealthily following them. By the time he noticed the suspicious presence, he could hear the open whispers.

    “Isn’t that Cha Yiljoo?”

“Oh my, it is. It’s Cha Yiljoo!”

“Is that Jung Euihyun next to him?”

As he consciously looked around, a crowd was following them. Some even overtook them to get a clear look at their faces. Every one of them had a phone in their hand. He discreetly pulled his hand out of Cha Yiljoo’s grasp.

Customers inside the restaurant also started looking outside. Some even came out to watch. Like a swarm of bees, a large crowd moved along with them wherever they went. This made it difficult to even take a single step.

    “Hello! I’m a fan!”

“Where are you going? Are you filming something?”

They incessantly asked questions and talked to them. Even a single word from each person became a tremendous noise. It was utter chaos, with people claiming to be fans, people asking for handshakes, people taking selfies with them in the background, and even people live-streaming. He couldn’t ignore someone who was half-running after them, repeatedly extending their hand. As he reluctantly shook their hand, the crowd surrounding them stretched out their hands one after another. It seemed impossible to go to the restaurant in that state.

Cha Yiljoo, seemingly having the same thought, stopped walking for a moment. The crowd also stopped. The shutter sounds intensified. Even in this bewildering situation, Cha Yiljoo didn’t frown. He simply requested their understanding with his characteristic smile and polite tone.

“Excuse me. We’re a bit busy. We’ll be going now.”

Cha Yiljoo gently guided Euihyun by placing a hand on his back and changed direction. Euihyun quickly followed his lead. As they started moving again, some people from the crowd dispersed, while even more joined them. Even while walking with long strides, Cha Yiljoo smiled at the phones thrust towards him. He even briefly responded to some questions.

For Euihyun, who was being swept along by the crowd, it was unimaginable. He simply accepted the drinks, snacks, and other gifts thrust at him, nodding his head in response.

Then, someone suddenly grabbed the back of his coat collar. Euihyun stumbled momentarily. If Cha Yiljoo hadn’t immediately caught him, he would have certainly fallen backward.

“Please don’t pull, you could get hurt. Please.”

While politely requesting, his gaze was fixed on that one person. The surrounding gazes all focused on them. Only then did the person release his grip and step back with an embarrassed expression. He didn’t apologize.

After that, Cha Yiljoo kept a firm arm around Euihyun’s shoulder as they walked. Because of the previous incident, no one viewed it with suspicion.

He didn’t know how they managed to get back to the car. Cha Yiljoo took the driver’s seat for the dazed Euihyun. Even as they tried to leave the parking lot, the crowd was still gathered at the exit. Unfazed, Cha Yiljoo drove slowly. Instead of honking at the people blocking the way, he leaned out the window and politely asked them to move. Finally, a parking attendant appeared due to the slow progress. He forcibly pushed the crowd back, threatening to call the police if they caused further commotion. At last, the path slowly cleared.

Even after they left the parking lot, Euihyun sat blankly for a while. Suddenly, Cha Yiljoo took his hand. He looked down at his hand, listlessly interlocked with Cha Yiljoo’s.

    “Are you okay?”

    “Ah, yes. A little flustered.”

“I was too naive, thinking about taking Euihyun somewhere nice. I heard it’s always crowded, but I thought it would be okay since it’s a weekday. What should we do now? Should we look for somewhere else?”

“No. At this hour, it’ll be crowded anywhere. Let’s just go home.”

    “That’s a shame. It’s a rare date.”

He sighed deeply and grumbled. Even when the light changed, he didn’t let go of Euihyun’s hand. As if to soothe his disappointment, he stroked the back of Euihyun’s hand with his thumb again.

“I’m okay. Just being able to see you, Yiljoo, makes me so happy.”

Suddenly, Cha Yiljoo’s hand stopped. At the same time, the car came to a sudden stop at the yellow light. His body, which had lurched forward, jerked back from the recoil. Cars in the next lane sped past. His startled heart pounded fiercely.

Looking blankly ahead, Cha Yiljoo repeatedly rubbed his forehead. A rather troubled expression settled on his face.

“Don’t say things like that so suddenly. We almost had an accident.”

A hint of laughter tinged his chiding voice. Euihyun, retracing what he had said, suddenly averted his gaze. He tried to subtly pull his hand away, but Cha Yiljoo stubbornly held on. He deliberately turned his head towards the passenger window. Even so, he couldn’t hide the redness that crept up his neck and ears.

After grocery shopping at a supermarket near his home, he prepared dinner. He decided on spicy braised chicken (dakbokkeumtang). He added chopped chili peppers and perilla leaves to the bubbling stew. A savory smell wafted through the air, and white steam puffed out of the rice cooker.

While Euihyun prepared the meal, Cha Yiljoo looked through a photo album at the dining table. Most of the photos were old. In particular, there were an overwhelming number of photos from his infancy and toddler years. It was evidence that Euihyun had once received the natural love of his parents in an ordinary family.

Cha Yiljoo chuckled as he looked at the baby pictures. He even tapped Euihyun’s chubby cheeks with his finger.

“You were quite chubby as a baby, Euihyun?”

“Yes. I heard I wasn’t fussy. I ate well and slept well.”

He responded while checking the seasoning. Staring intently at his face, Cha Yiljoo said, “Your eyes are the same.” At his strangely languid tone, Euihyun stood there blankly for a moment before returning to his cooking.

Flipping through a few more pages of the album revealed pictures from his school days.

“Now that I think about it, even public schools in Korea have uniforms, right?”

    “Usually from middle school.”

“Hmm. Everyone’s wearing the same clothes, similar hairstyles, but I’d recognize you right away.”

Cha Yiljoo pointed to a corner of a group photo. He was right. He then scanned a few more pictures from that time and muttered something cryptic.

“I thought it was unoriginal and irrational. But school uniforms aren’t as bad as I thought.”

“Since it’s something you can only wear then, looking back, it feels quite cute.”

    “Yes, you are.”

It somehow felt like the subject didn’t match. When he turned around, wondering if he had misheard, their eyes met immediately.

“It was around this time, wasn’t it? When you debuted as an actor.”

    “Yes. Probably.”

“I remember. This is the face you had. It’s nice to see it again.”

It felt strangely unfamiliar. It was like meeting someone he had met a long time ago, or like transcending time. Cha Yiljoo’s smile deepened. It was a warm gaze, as if he were looking at an innocent child.

Euihyun watched him for a moment and then quietly turned around. He scratched his chest with the back of his hand. Cha Yiljoo was undoubtedly looking warmly at his younger self, but his present self felt a tingling sensation as if he were receiving that gaze.

“I watched it again a few days ago.”

    “Which…?”

“<Lost Child>. I looked for it just in case, and I still had it.”

There were no more pictures in the album. As he regretfully closed the cover, he shared his thoughts on rewatching the movie.

“When I first saw it, I focused on the story and directing because you were an unfamiliar face and the acting wasn’t particularly smooth. But now, I can’t see anyone but you. Your naive expressions, your awkward gestures. It was enjoyable because they’re things I can’t imagine now.”

    “…Is that so? Dinner’s ready.”

As if embarrassed, he avoided the topic and set the table. Even as he set the spoons and chopsticks, Cha Yiljoo teased, “You couldn’t even look at the camera properly.” His playful reminiscing continued relentlessly until Euihyun asked him to stop.

Soon, a steaming hot pot was placed before them.

“It feels like it’s been a long time since I’ve had dakbokkeumtang.”

    “It’s a common dish.”

“True. But there’s nowhere to have it unless you make it at home. There are many restaurants specializing in soy sauce-based jjimdak, but somehow, this feels more heartwarming.”

Anticipation overflowed in his pleased smile. Euihyun fidgeted with his chopsticks, shrinking back.

    “It might not taste good.”

    “Why? It looks delicious.”

“It’s been a while since I’ve made it. I don’t make this kind of food to eat alone.”

“Then should we eat it often from now on?”

He smiled brightly and comforted him in his own way rather than with direct reassurance. Euihyun liked that kindness. He smiled quietly and nodded.

He served Cha Yiljoo some dakbokkeumtang first. Cha Yiljoo said, “I’ll enjoy this,” and put a piece of potato in his mouth. The soft texture and the right amount of savory flavor harmoniously broke apart in his mouth. Thanks to the long simmering, the spicy and sweet flavors of the broth had deliciously permeated the potato. The chicken, which had been boiled once to remove the fat, was particularly chewy. It was fascinating that the raw ingredients combined to create such a flavor.

    “It’s really delicious.”

    “I’m glad. Eat a lot.”

Euihyun, who had been subtly gauging Cha Yiljoo’s reaction, smiled with relief. Then he picked up his chopsticks and started eating. Watching him intently, Cha Yiljoo suddenly brought up an unexpected topic.

“My ideal type wasn’t someone who’s good at cooking. Meals can be taken care of outside. I’d rather buy my person all the things they like, delicious things, good things, than make them work hard.”

    “……?”

Euihyun stuffed his cheeks with rice and looked up. A quiet chuckle escaped Cha Yiljoo’s lips at the sight, reminiscent of a toddler.

“But after meeting you, Euihyun, my thoughts have changed a bit. I like seeing you cook for me. When I eat warm food, I feel certain that I’m loved. When you wait for me to say it’s delicious and then smile happily, I feel like I have the whole world.”

He fidgeted with his chopsticks awkwardly. His gaze drifted away from Cha Yiljoo, landing somewhere vaguely on the table. He didn’t know how to react to the embarrassing words thrown at him without warning. Watching Euihyun, who couldn’t even chew the rice in his mouth, Cha Yiljoo continued,

“These days, I think about it from time to time. What if it were someone else sitting here instead of me? It’s something that hasn’t happened and will never happen, but even imagining it makes me feel so resentful that I can’t stand it.”

Euihyun’s head, which had been feigning composure, completely drooped. His ears also turned burning red. If Cha Yiljoo continued, he felt like he would really lose it.

    “Shall we finish eating?”

    “…Yes.”

Euihyun replied in a barely audible voice. The rice, which had lingered in his mouth and turned sweet, finally went down. Cha Yiljoo placed a carefully deboned piece of chicken in his bowl and resumed eating.

Those simple, small moments were happy. Because he had someone to share a two-person dining table and tableware with. Because there was someone who gladly ate the food he cooked in a large pot. And because that person was Cha Yiljoo. If everyone was given the same amount of luck at birth, Euihyun felt like he had used all of his to gain Cha Yiljoo.

He must have been staring blankly for a while without realizing it. Sensing his gaze, Cha Yiljoo chuckled and asked, “Why?” He shook his head and focused on eating. For some reason, he couldn’t taste anything.

After clearing the table, they drank freshly brewed coffee. The conversation naturally shifted to the project he was currently filming.

“What’s the filming schedule going forward?”

“Originally, the Nepal location shoot was scheduled for two weeks from now. But there were some issues due to attending the film festival, so I decided to join separately. These days, I’m mostly doing studio shoots, and I think I can wrap them up before departure.”

“That’s a shame. I wanted to see it in person at least once, since it’s your first attempt at playing two roles, Euihyun.”

“It’s nothing special. And you’re busy.”

“Still, it’s a shame that I can’t go and support my boyfriend who’s working hard day and night.”

They hadn’t officially started dating, but since they went on dates and had sex, it probably wasn’t much different. Nevertheless, he wasn’t yet used to being called a boyfriend.

As he idly scratched the handle of his mug, Cha Yiljoo suddenly reached out. When Euihyun stared blankly at him, he gently shook his hand. He shifted his left hand, which had been holding the mug, towards Cha Yiljoo. Unable to wait patiently, Cha Yiljoo captured Euihyun’s slow-moving hand. Then, as usual, he caressed the back of his hand.

“Actually, I have to leave early tomorrow morning. I have some contractual obligations left over there.”

He had heard a couple of days ago during a phone call that Cha Yiljoo had to go to the United States soon. Even so, it felt somewhat sudden. Schedules change depending on circumstances, and Cha Yiljoo must have had to adjust his schedule because of attending the film festival.

Was that why he had specifically come to see him today?

“…Ah, is it because of the matter you mentioned before? Then when will you be back?”

“I don’t think I can come back due to my schedule, and I think I’ll be moving directly from there when you leave for Berlin, Euihyun.”

Euihyun just nodded. He didn’t show any particular reaction.

“You don’t seem disappointed at all, Euihyun? We won’t be able to see each other for a full two weeks.”

“You’re going because of work, so I think it can’t be helped.”

He smiled with a hint of resignation. Being upset wouldn’t change the situation. He didn’t want to trouble Cha Yiljoo with something that wouldn’t work out.

Cha Yiljoo knew his personality well. In fact, he knew it too well, but he still felt a sense of longing. He longed for Euihyun to be more demanding.

Cha Yiljoo subtly pulled up his sleeve to check the time. A subtle anxiety appeared in Euihyun’s eyes as he glanced at him. If he remained silent, it felt like Cha Yiljoo would get up and leave right away. He wanted to talk a little more if it was okay. Since they wouldn’t see each other for a while, he wanted to look at his face for a long time.

Despite that anxious gaze, Cha Yiljoo stood up without hesitation.

“I have to pack and travel from early morning. I think I should get going today.”

Euihyun unknowingly stood up as well. Then he slowly followed Cha Yiljoo toward the entrance. Cha Yiljoo’s steps were unhesitating.

    “Are you… leaving already?”

Euihyun’s voice cracked. Cha Yiljoo stopped putting on his shoes and turned to look at him. A deep sense of regret was evident on Euihyun’s face.

“I want to stay longer, but you have to film all day tomorrow, Euihyun. If I start moving from early morning, you’ll definitely lose sleep.”

Cha Yiljoo explained calmly. He wasn’t smiling at all, but somehow, Euihyun had that illusion. After watching Euihyun hesitate with an embarrassed look for a moment, he finally put on his shoes. Then, saying “I’ll call you every day,” he grabbed the doorknob.

    “I’m okay, though.”

“Yes? What did you say, Euihyun?”

He tilted his head as if he hadn’t heard. Euihyun rubbed the back of his neck and once again stopped Cha Yiljoo.

“If you’re not uncomfortable, you can stay the night.”

“Not me, you’ll be uncomfortable, Euihyun.”

    “…I’d like you to stay.”

    “If you insist, Euihyun…”

Cha Yiljoo paused as if pondering seriously before coming back inside. He cupped Euihyun’s face in his hands and lightly kissed his lips.

    “Shall we do that?”

His beaming face looked incredibly satisfied.

When Cha Yiljoo came out of the shower, Euihyun was spreading out bedding on the floor. When Cha Yiljoo gave him a puzzled look, Euihyun continued placing the pillows and offered,

“The bed is too narrow. I’ll sleep on the floor. You sleep up there.”

“Isn’t this putting the cart before the horse? How can you sleep on the hard floor?”

“I sleep well even without a bed. It’s common in Korea.”

“It’ll be cold all night if you don’t at least lay down a mat.”

    “I turned on the heating.”

For some reason, he responded firmly. Cha Yiljoo watched Euihyun, who was persistently avoiding his gaze, then went and sat on the bed. As he placed the towel he had brought out on the nightstand, Euihyun quickly got under the covers and lay down. Then, turning his back, he said, “Goodnight,” without even turning off the lights.

This was… It was only going to make him more frustrated.

Cha Yiljoo obediently said, “Goodnight, Euihyun.” He turned off all the lights except for the bedside lamp. But he didn’t lie down immediately; instead, he leaned back against the headboard. There was no sound from Euihyun. Not even the rustling of the blankets could be heard.

    “Are you cold, Euihyun?”

    “…….”

    “It feels a bit cold.”

He murmured as if for Euihyun to hear, his voice directed at the back of his head. Then Euihyun, who had been quiet, started to toss and turn. Finally, he got out of bed. Cha Yiljoo barely suppressed a laugh and acted nonchalantly.

“Maybe there’s a draft coming in through the window.”

“Ah, this villa is quite old. Just in case the heated mattress cord came unplugged, I’ll check for you.”

He lifted the bedsheet. He checked the cord connected to the outlet and the temperature control device in succession. Everything was working normally. He even put his hand under the sheet. It was warm.

“It seems to be working fine…”

At that moment, Cha Yiljoo’s hands reached out and cupped his face. Then, as if out of habit, he kissed him. He pressed his lips against Euihyun’s several times as he startled. Euihyun, who had been stiffly resisting, quickly softened.

“I think it’ll be okay if I hold you while I sleep.”

    “…That’s difficult.”

“I won’t have sex with you.”

Cha Yiljoo gently pulled Euihyun’s arm and assured him. After they had sex, he hadn’t been able to look Cha Yiljoo in the eye for a while. It was because he kept remembering the image of himself moaning in excitement. Moreover, because of the aftereffects, he had felt slightly unwell, so he hadn’t even considered it with his schedule ahead.

However, if they weren’t going to have sex, there was no reason to refuse Cha Yiljoo’s offer. It was cold, and Euihyun also wanted to feel his warmth.

After hesitating, he allowed himself to be pulled by Cha Yiljoo, who tugged his arm again. He was almost buried in his embrace, their backs and chests pressed together. Cha Yiljoo’s chin naturally rested on his shoulder. He could feel Cha Yiljoo’s body heat and pulse through their touching skin. As he nuzzled his head, their ears brushed against each other and softly intertwined. Just being this close made his heart pound.

Soon, Cha Yiljoo’s hand slid around his waist. He held Euihyun close, his entire palm cupping his abdomen. It made Euihyun feel restricted, but he tried not to be too conscious of it. Even so, he kept his head stubbornly fixed forward.

“You have to leave early, so go to sleep.”

“I guess it’s because it’s not my usual bedtime, but I can’t seem to fall asleep. Shall we talk for a bit? Is there anything you’re curious about me? Ask me anything. I’ll answer you.”

He suggested, pressing kisses along Euihyun’s white nape. After thinking for a moment, Euihyun cautiously began,

“I heard that the CEO’s mother raised you.”

    “Amanda?”

    “Is her name Amanda?”

    “Yes.”

“I’m curious about what kind of person she is.”

“She’s someone who’s lived her whole life without wanting for anything. So she’s bright, positive, doesn’t know failure or frustration, and is also very meddlesome. Sometimes she’s pure and innocent like a child, but she’s not irresponsible or frivolous. I don’t know if she’s a great mother, but she’s definitely a lovable person.”

    “You do love her, right?”

    “Of course.”

“Then, may I ask why you don’t visit her often?”

He asked after hesitating. Cha Yiljoo paused for a moment and then shrugged.

“When I meet Amanda, the hypnosis breaks.”

    “What does that…”

“She’s my benefactor and someone who knows everything about me. No matter how much recognition I receive outside or how bright I’ve become, she’s always worried about me. No matter how much I pretend to have overcome it, pretend to have forgotten everything, she’s still not at ease. Because it was so messed up. Do you know why I got into acting, Euihyun?”

    “No.”

“Because while I’m acting, I don’t have to be ‘me.’ No one says anything even if I completely erase and eliminate ‘me.’ In fact, they praise me for doing a good job. But that doesn’t work in front of Amanda. No matter how I pretend, to her, I’m still that seven-year-old boy who desperately needed help. I know that all that worry and concern is affection, but I can’t help but feel uncomfortable.”

Euihyun, who had been listening attentively, suddenly fidgeted. Cha Yiljoo watched him, wondering what he was about to do, as he slowly turned to face Cha Yiljoo and lie down. Staring directly into Cha Yiljoo’s eyes, he then lowered his gaze. He carefully touched Cha Yiljoo’s arm, which was wrapped around him.

“But now that you’re okay, shouldn’t you visit her?”

    “Hmm… I should, right?”

“Yes. It might sound like interference, but I think you should.”

    “Alright, I will then.”

He readily agreed and caressed Euihyun’s cheek. He then slightly raised his head and kissed him. Sweet breaths mingled between their joined lips. Euihyun’s eyes naturally fluttered closed. Sucking gently on his sweet upper and lower lips in turn, Cha Yiljoo slowly slid his hand down. His hand trailed down Euihyun’s chest, abdomen, and waist, then slipped smoothly under his shirt. The startled Euihyun flinched his shoulders.

    “I’ll only touch you.”

Soothing the wary Euihyun, he nuzzled his lips against his neck, now half-turned. As gentle kisses continued, Euihyun’s body relaxed. Seizing the opportunity, he grasped Euihyun’s chest, which he had been lightly stroking, and kneaded it deeply. As his nipples were repeatedly rubbed and grazed through the shirt, Euihyun began to let out shallow breaths. He turned completely onto his back.

Licking thickly along the exposed nape of his neck, he grasped Euihyun’s pants and underwear. While teasing Euihyun’s earlobe with his sharp nose, he slowly pulled down his pants and underwear together. The waistband of his underwear caught around the middle of his buttocks, and his compressed cheeks lifted elastically. He grasped the soft flesh in his hand and repeatedly nibbled on Euihyun’s white nape. Euihyun groaned but stubbornly pretended not to notice. The more he did so, the more he was kneaded, both above and below.

Finally, Cha Yiljoo’s middle finger slid into the crevice of his half-exposed buttocks. As he caressed the shadowed dip, his fingertip touched the soft opening. He traced each and every wrinkle around it. At the ticklish touch, Euihyun protested as if complaining.

“Nn, you said you wouldn’t do that…”

“It’s not sex, so it’s okay. I’m just giving you a massage.”

Cha Yiljoo retorted shamelessly and subtly pulled up Euihyun’s shirt. The hem rolled up to the nape of his neck, fully exposing his smooth back. He nipped at his sharp shoulder blades, causing Euihyun to flinch. Slipping his hand under Euihyun’s arm, he rolled his nipple and licked the spot he had just bitten, making the ridge of his spine stand out even more. Caressing his twitching thighs, he planted kisses along his straight spine. His chin touched the curve of his buttocks. Cha Yiljoo willingly opened his mouth and bit down on the firm flesh. At the faint pain rising from his buttocks, Euihyun buried his face deeper into the pillow.

He coated his finger with saliva and brought it to the narrow opening. Just by circling the entrance, the fine wrinkles smoothed out and then reappeared.

Quietly holding his breath, he pulled down Euihyun’s underwear to mid-thigh. Then he spread Euihyun’s rounded buttocks apart. The skin stretched, and the small opening slightly parted. Euihyun, who had been enduring until then, grabbed Cha Yiljoo’s arm.

    “Yiljoo…”

“I heard that stimulating the prostate improves blood circulation, have you heard of that? It washes away fatigue and makes you feel refreshed quickly.”

He explained nonchalantly and pushed his finger in. Euihyun’s hand, gripping his arm, tightened. While soothing him with “Shh,” he slowly moved his finger back and forth, loosening the opening. He also pressed kisses repeatedly against Euihyun’s heated ear. Euihyun clenched his teeth and suppressed his moans. Even when Cha Yiljoo said, “It’s okay to make noise,” he stubbornly shook his head.

He diligently prepared him, adding fingers one by one. Instead of using lubricant, he took his time, massaging the opening and the surrounding delicate skin over and over again. While doing so, he repeatedly nipped and kissed Euihyun’s waist, sides, and buttocks.

When the resistance of the opening subsided to some extent, he pulled out his penis. His already erect penis gently touched the loosened opening. The opening twitched, taking the tip in and then releasing it. Meanwhile, the pre-cum gathered at the tip of his urethra smoothly coated the wrinkles of the entrance. Watching the sight, Cha Yiljoo languidly licked his lower lip and slowly pressed his hips forward.

At the shallow but definite feeling of penetration, Euihyun’s hands clenched into fists. Leaning down to kiss him, Cha Yiljoo whispered sweetly,

“You’ll be able to sleep well.”

He was thoroughly armed with shamelessness. Immediately after, his penis pushed about a third of the way in, parting Euihyun’s buttocks. Euihyun’s shoulders and thighs tensed simultaneously at the sensation of the dense mass expanding and pushing inside. His fists also turned white.

Lest his fingernails dig into his palms, Cha Yiljoo interlocked his fingers with Euihyun’s. Then, nibbling on the nape of his neck, he repeated shallow thrusts. At the subtle sensation of his insides slowly spreading and contracting, Euihyun’s back shuddered. With the gentle, spreading pleasure, his face also slightly furrowed and then relaxed repeatedly.

    “I won’t overdo it.”

Cha Yiljoo reassured him, repeatedly kissing his nape and ear. With each thrust, he also deeply stroked his perineum. With his incredibly careful movements, his heated penis smoothly slid in and massaged the inner walls. Unlike their intense sex, it really felt like he was getting a massage. A languid warmth melted through his entire body.

    “Nngh, mm…”

“It feels unexpectedly good to be lulled like this, right?”

Cha Yiljoo lifted the corners of his mouth and pressed his body close against Euihyun’s back. His weight, scent, warmth, and breath all washed over him. With the constant faint stimulation, the inside of Euihyun’s groin subtly swelled. Nibbling on his soft earlobe, he continued to move his hips smoothly. The blanket covering them moved with his rhythm.

    “Nn… mmngh.”

Even though he tried to hold back, muffled moans escaped him. With the deep, tingling sensation, his whole body relaxed helplessly. A pleasant warmth emanating from his groin spread languidly throughout his body. His eyelids soon grew heavy.

Cha Yiljoo continued his leisurely thrusts and pulled Euihyun’s interlocked hand closer. He pressed kisses on each of Euihyun’s fingers intertwined with his. Perhaps he had fallen asleep, as Euihyun only breathed evenly, his back rising and falling slightly. Only when Cha Yiljoo’s penis pushed in did soft groans mix with his breaths.

Cha Yiljoo softened his gaze as if looking at something infinitely lovable.

    “Sweet dreams, Euihyun.”

He woke up to the vibration. The surroundings had become bright at some point. Was it already morning? He slowly blinked his eyes open and fumbled on the bed for his phone. Without even checking the caller ID, he answered the incoming call.

    “Hello?”

    — Euihyun, did you just wake up?

    “Ah, Manager Park!”

He was instantly wide awake at the sound of Park Hanyoung’s voice. He immediately checked the time on the bedside clock. 7:30 am. As his mind cleared, he remembered his filming schedule, which started at 9:00 am.

    — I think I’ll be leaving in about 30 minutes. I’ll call you when I arrive in front of your house.

    “Okay.”

He quickly sat up and ended the call. Silence immediately descended upon the room. He was about to go to the bathroom when he glanced back at the rumpled bed. Cha Yiljoo, who had fallen asleep with him, was already gone. He seemed to have felt Cha Yiljoo getting up at dawn, but because he had been sleeping so deeply, he couldn’t be sure.

He decided to contact him later and started preparing to leave immediately. As he was about to go outside, he noticed a sticky note on the bedroom door.

    Good morning, Euihyun.

It was clearly written by Cha Yiljoo. It wasn’t anything special, but he stared at it for a while. A silent smile spread across his lips. He carefully smoothed out the corners of the note with his palm and put it in a drawer. He didn’t have much time to get ready.

He immediately opened the door and went out. The gentle aroma of coffee greeted him first. He was about to head straight for the bathroom when he stopped at the coffee machine. There was another sticky note like the one he had just seen.

    Have a cup of coffee.

    Don’t skip meals.

He found another note on a nearby frying pan. He opened the lid. A Spanish omelet, which looked like it would make a hearty breakfast if slightly warmed, was prepared. With spinach, bacon, potatoes, and eggs mixed together, it seemed to be nutritious as well.

His heart tingled at Cha Yiljoo’s thoughtfulness. He couldn’t hide the smile that kept spreading across his face.

He went to the bathroom to wash his face first. As expected, a note on the mirror greeted him.

Have a refreshing start to your day.

He brushed his teeth while staring at the note. As he glanced to the side, he saw his face grinning foolishly in the reflection. Feeling embarrassed, he lowered his head and focused on washing up. As he was leaving the bathroom, he carefully dried his hands, lest the note get wet.

He turned on the stove and warmed the omelet. He also heated the coffee Cha Yiljoo had made and filled a mug. With the plate in one hand and the mug in the other, he went to the living room. He habitually sat down in front of the TV to watch the news.

As soon as he sat on the sofa, a quiet chuckle escaped him. There was another sticky note on the TV screen.

    See you in Berlin.

It seemed like Cha Yiljoo knew his routine all too well. He went to the TV and removed the sticky note. He carefully smoothed out any slightly creased areas.

Returning to the sofa, he turned on the TV. The channel was set to a cable broadcast. An entertainment news program was airing. His gaze was drawn to the news of the film <Salieri> being invited to the Berlin Film Festival. Footage of Cha Yiljoo appearing at the airport early that morning was then broadcast.

Cha Yiljoo’s face looked relaxed. He smiled and waved leisurely at the cameras pointed at him. He was merely greeting the cameras. But perhaps because he was facing the television, it felt like he was greeting Euihyun himself.

What confidence. Chiding himself, he ate the omelet Cha Yiljoo had made. The seasoning was just right, and the potatoes and spinach were soft, making it easy on his empty stomach. His hungry stomach was quickly filled. As he finished with a sip of fragrant coffee, it felt like his everyday routine had become special.

As he was clearing the dishes and brushing his teeth again, the phone rang. The caller ID was Park Hanyoung, as expected.

“Yes, Manager Park. I’ll be right out.”

He briefly ended the call and left the house. As he took out his keys to lock the door, he saw the final sticky note. His eyes, which had widened in surprise, softly crinkled.

    Have a good day :—)

Carefully peeling off the note, he whispered softly,

    “I’ll be back.”

He didn’t know how many years it had been since he had last uttered those words. A tingling sensation spread through him, and his chest swelled with emotion. He felt like he could do anything today.

    🎥

Studio 2, Seoul Comprehensive Film Studios. Filming for the movie <Himalaya> was in full swing. <Himalaya> depicts the story of a father and son who reunite after overcoming a 25-year time gap in extreme conditions. As the word ‘Himalaya’ is a combination of ‘hima,’ meaning ‘snow’ in ancient Sanskrit, and ‘alaya,’ meaning ‘abode,’ vast snowy landscapes were planned throughout the running time.

Euihyun played two roles in the film: the protagonist, ‘Chansung,’ and his missing father, ‘Changin.’ It was undeniably a leading role. That’s why he felt a heavier sense of responsibility than ever before.

The scene they were filming today was the part where ‘Chansung’ falls into a crevasse after getting separated from his group. Wire action was essential. The production team actively suggested using a stuntman, but they didn’t stop Euihyun, who insisted on doing it himself. They seemed grateful for his dedication.

It wasn’t his first time doing wire action. However, as with the filming of <Monster>, there was always a high risk of injury, so he had been preparing by attending action school in his spare time. Thanks to that, he had become quite accustomed to relying on wires and maintaining his balance. He had gained confidence that he could do even better this time.

He finished his preparations and headed to the set. The blue walls surrounding him first caught his eye. A 10-meter-high structure stood on one side. A giant air mattress was also placed at the point of impact. Various equipment, including a jimmy jib camera, would be used for this shoot. Perhaps due to the tension before the challenging shoot, the staff members all had serious expressions.

He entered, deliberately greeting them loudly with, “Hello, everyone.” Director Moon, who had been giving instructions point by point with a serious expression, greeted him.

“Yes, hello. How are you feeling today?”

    “I’m good.”

“Aren’t you scared now that you see it in person? You have to jump down from up there. Seeing it from here and actually going up there are two different things.”

“I’ve done it a few times before, so I think I’ll be fine.”

“If you feel even slightly hesitant, let me know. We have a stuntman prepared just in case.”

“Wouldn’t using a double restrict the editing? You wouldn’t be able to use any close-up shots where my face is visible.”

    “That’s true.”

“Then I’ll just do it myself.”

Euihyun firmly asserted his will. While his proactive attitude for the sake of the film’s quality was appreciated, the production team couldn’t help but be worried. If the lead actor got hurt, the subsequent schedule would be completely messed up. However, his pure ambition as a director was no different from Euihyun’s.

After some deliberation, Director Moon decided to trust Euihyun’s will and experience. The wire team staff were immediately called.

    “Here, connect the line.”

First, he put on the harness to which the wires would be attached. He then put on his original filming costume, a mountaineering top and jacket, over it. When the wire was pulled out through the back, it blended in seamlessly.

    “You can go up now.”

The assistant director personally guided Euihyun. A ladder was connected behind the structure. He climbed up step by step. The martial arts director, who was waiting at the top, held out his hand. Since they had met often during practice, they naturally conversed to ease the tension.

    “Hello, Director.”

“Come on up. How are you feeling?”

    “A little nervous.”

“Since the height is greater than when you practiced, the impact on your body will be that much greater. Are you sure you can do it properly?”

    “I’ll try.”

“Good. Then I’ll explain the movements, so listen carefully. Euihyun, you’re in a situation where you’re swept away by an avalanche, right? What would a person do when a huge avalanche comes from behind? Instinctively, you’d run. Then you fall into the crevasse. You’re not diving. Keep this difference in mind. During filming, they’ll blow wind instead of creating an actual avalanche. I think you can start acting according to that timing. Relax and just do as you practiced. The wire is connected, and there’s a mat, so don’t be too scared.”

He nodded carefully. If an actor gets hurt during filming, the morale of the entire production team drops. Since he had refused a double and volunteered to do it himself, he wanted to finish it safely and successfully.

    “Camera test!”

A moment later, the assistant director’s voice rang out. In response, Euihyun stood tall on top of the high structure. The staff members checked the wire connection again. When he looked down, everyone was watching him with worried expressions.

    “Euihyun, are you ready?”

    “Yes!”

He replied loudly. When the director made a circle above his head, he followed suit. Soon, even the martial arts director went down the structure. Now, Euihyun was the only one left in the air.

The standby status was checked one last time through the staff’s walkie-talkies. Then, the slate was clapped, and Director Moon shouted through the megaphone,

    “Ready, action!”

He had been holding his breath and released it all at once. As a result, his breathing became unsteady, and his shoulders trembled. Suddenly, wind blew from behind him. It was strong enough to make his clothes and hair flutter. With a sense of foreboding, he flinched and stiffened his body. The wind became fiercer and fiercer. He slowly turned his head in response. His face, as if facing a real avalanche, was filled with shock. The color drained from his face as if by magic.

The staff member in charge of the wire, watching for the right moment for the fall, started the countdown.

    “3, 2, 1!”

Following the countdown, he turned around in a daze and ran. He desperately ran, swinging his arms wide. Even with nowhere left to step, he didn’t hesitate. When he heard the word “Jump,” the ground disappeared beneath his feet, and his body plummeted downwards. The air mattress rapidly approached.

He instinctively closed his eyes tight. At that instant, the wire pulled taut. His body, which had been about to hit the mattress, was instantly pulled up into the air. As the harness tightened, a sharp pain shot through his chest, shoulders, and back.

    “…Ugh.”

A muffled groan escaped him. Strength momentarily drained from his limbs. At the cut sign, the wire attached to the crane slowly loosened. Euihyun, who had been dangling in the air, was lowered onto the mattress.

The staff rushed over and supported his shaking body. Only after he was completely down on the mattress did the pressure disappear. The assistant director quickly handed him a bottle of water. He took it absentmindedly, and then suddenly, his back throbbed. He rotated his arm slightly, and as expected, worried voices arose.

    “Euihyun, are you okay?”

    “Ah, yes. I’m fine.”

He quickly got up and dismissed their concerns. His shoulders and back were stiff, but he didn’t show it. He had experienced such muscle pain countless times during practice. He deliberately diverted the attention focused on him towards the filmed footage.

    “Did it come out well?”

“Well, the gravity doesn’t feel quite right. I think the wire reel timing was slightly off. I know it’s tough, but can we do it one more time?”

    “Yes, okay.”

    “I feel bad about this.”

“No, it’s alright. I’ll do it again until you’re satisfied.”

He readily accepted the director’s request and asked if he could go up now. The staff members were dumbfounded. The reason wire action takes a long time is partly due to equipment preparation and safety checks, but it’s often because of the actors. It’s because you can’t force someone who’s mentally shaken.

“Why don’t you take a break?”

“I’ll do it now before I lose the feeling. I think if I rest even for a moment, I’ll lose my focus.”

“Then there’s no other way. Let’s do it quickly and get it over with.”

Director Moon chuckled, shaking his head, and gave instructions to the staff.

    “Prepare for another take!”

    “We’re going for another take!”

The floor director repeated his instructions so everyone could hear. The set was quickly reorganized.

Euihyun went back up the structure. Taking deep breaths, he recalled the sensation of falling. He had never experienced falling from a high place, but he had once slipped and fallen into water when he was young. He seemed to have flinched momentarily and then frantically struggled. Recalling that moment, he waited for the cue sign.

    “Euihyun, one more time!”

Director Moon, having completed all preparations, called for attention. He nodded vigorously so that those below could see. At the word “Ready,” he quietly held his breath.

    “Action!”

The wind blew from behind him again. As before, he realistically acted out the situation of encountering an avalanche. As if facing a house-sized avalanche, he froze in surprise and then stumbled backward. His eyes widened, and his mouth fell open. Then, at some point, he turned around and ran for his life.
