by Cherry[Get rid of it, and go out and live as Park Dong-sik. That’s the condition I want.]
“Sister-in-law.”
At the sudden voice, Park Dong-sik looked up to see who it was. Kim Tae-han was sitting in front of him with a worried expression. After seeing his face asking “Are you okay?”, Park Dong-sik looked around. His mind was foggy from not getting proper sleep. Kim Tae-han had come to see Park Dong-sik after work, carrying lots of food in both hands.
“This is supposed to be famous bossam. Eat up.”
“Hey, didn’t I tell you not to bring anything that could be drinking snacks? I’m already dying for a drink.”
“Just hold back a little, for the baby’s sake.”
Park Dong-sik stared at the glistening bossam with a desperate face. This should be eaten with makgeolli or soju. Just thinking about it made his mouth water. Damn it. Let’s think of it as regenerating the liver. Being reborn with a baby’s liver.
Making this resolution, he took the chopsticks Kim Tae-han handed him and put the meat in his mouth.
“How is it? Delicious, right?”
“Yeah. It’s good.”
“That’s great. Our Happy should eat a lot too.”
When Kim Tae-han spoke to his belly, Park Dong-sik frowned.
“Who were you talking to just now?”
“Who else? Our baby.”
Park Dong-sik jumped up.
“That’s not even a dog’s name! And the baby already has a prenatal name. I picked it.”
“What is it?”
“Yuk(six).”
“Yuk?”
If he said “Six billion,” this guy would be suspicious.
So without much thought, he blurted out whatever came to mind.
“Yukgap-i.”
“…”
“What? Why are you looking at me like that?”
“If you don’t want the baby to hate you, change that prenatal name right now.”
Park Dong-sik’s mouth twitched. Happy or Yukgap-i.
“Did you go to prenatal education class today too?”
“I don’t need to anymore.”
“Why?”
Whatever Kim Jun-han had said, the classes were canceled. Meanwhile, Park Dong-sik had been losing sleep for two days thinking about his proposal. The amount he offered was an astronomical figure. More than he could ever dream of. Even though he should have said okay right away, he asked for some more time to think about it.
On the other hand, he was curious. Why did Kim Jun-han want the baby gone? Chairman Kim wanted the baby gone out of jealousy. Could it be…is he jealous that I might have Kim Tae-han’s baby, which would most likely mean I’d soon have more involvement with Kim Tae-han than him? Like ‘If I can’t have you, I’d rather destroy you!’ kind of thing?
Ah, that thought was so thrilling he nearly wetted himself.
But no matter how he thought about it, that wasn’t it. There must be some other scheme. Is he trying to divorce and make a fresh start? When he searched about the youngest of the Young-hwa Group, he found that the person was good-looking and well-educated. Honestly, the two of them would make a good match.
“Sister-in-law.”
Hm? When he looked up, Kim Tae-han wiped the sauce from his mouth with a napkin and smiled kindly. This guy was eating like a fool with food all over his mouth. His eyes were filled with warmth right then. Park Dong-sik felt a pang and avoided his gaze.
“Oh right, tomorrow’s your hospital appointment, isn’t it? They said we could see with ultrasound?”
“Yeah…that’s what they said.”
“Let’s go together. I’ll leave work early.”
“There’s no need for that. Just work. You’re new. Who’s going to like it if you keep taking time off?”
“I told the team leader. Said my partner is pregnant and needs to go to the hospital, and they gave me permission.”
He almost dropped his chopsticks. You crazy bastard. After cursing, Kim Tae-han even poured him water.
“You might get indigestion. Drink some water too.”
Park Dong-sik put down his chopsticks without accepting the water.
“Don’t come. I’m going alone.”
“Why? I’m the father.”
“How many times do I have to say it? It might not be yours.”
“But the possibility is highest. Isn’t it time to accept it?”
“Absolutely, absolutely not. Don’t make me say it again.”
Kim Tae-han, who didn’t seem like he would back down easily, nodded his head.
“Okay. If you don’t want me to, I can’t help it.”
But his face still showed lingering attachment.
If I get rid of the baby, what would you feel? If I gave you the child, at least you wouldn’t abandon it like my parents, right?
Park Dong-sik, feeling sorry, wrapped some meat in lettuce and held it out to him.
“Eat.”
Kim Tae-han narrowed his eyes.
“This is highly suspicious. You never do this.”
Ah, this guy is quick to catch on.
“Fine, don’t eat it then.”
When he started to withdraw his hand, Kim Tae-han quickly grabbed it and brought it to his mouth. He deliberately nibbled on his fingertips too, making Park Dong-sik pull back in disgust.
“Hey!”
Kim Tae-han chewed the wrap while grinning mischievously.
“What a waste. I was going to eat Sister-in-law right up.”
In the midst of their bickering, Park Dong-sik suddenly remembered something.
“Wait here a minute.”
Rushing upstairs, Park Dong-sik came back down with a document and handed it to Kim Tae-han.
“What’s this? Our marriage papers?”
“Shut up. Just open it.”
Kim Tae-han tilted his head to one side as he looked at it. Hmm, he pursed his lips and turned to the next page.
“You know Kim Yoon-ah grew up in an orphanage, right?”
“I know. But why suddenly? Does Manager Kim want to find her parents?”
“Yeah…I tried to resolve it myself, but it’s harder than I thought. The orphanage where she stayed as a child is gone now, and there’s no one who knows anything about it.”
Kim Tae-han’s eyebrows raised as he studied the documents carefully.
“Hope House?”
“You know it?”
“I heard our foundation used to sponsor it. There was a huge scandal when the director’s corruption was exposed.”
Ah…Park Dong-sik was at a loss for words. At the time, Hope House was quite a large orphanage. People from all walks of life would come to take photos during the year-end. But this was the first he’d heard about Daesan Group’s sponsorship. That means I grew up eating food bought with Chairman Kim’s money. No wonder there’s a bitter taste in my mouth…
“Do you think we can find them…?”
“Of course, we have to help. Whose request is it?”
Looking at Kim Tae-han’s bright smile, Park Dong-sik felt like he was committing a crime. Would there ever be anyone else in life who would like me as much as you do? For a moment, he even considered running away with Kim Tae-han. But he soon gave up the idea. After all, it’s Lee Hee-soo that Kim Tae-han likes, not Park Dong-sik.
***
The doctor was a young alpha who had apparently been Lee Hee-soo’s gynecologist before. Though this was their second meeting since being rushed to the emergency room for bleeding, things were still awkward for him.
“How are you feeling?”
“Fine…”
“That’s good. By the way, didn’t Mr. Kim come with you? Usually, fathers come for the first visit.”
How can the father come when we don’t even know who it is?
One insists it’s not him. The other insists it is.
“Well, he is a busy person. Would you like to lie down inside? We’ll take a look with the ultrasound.”
“Doctor.”
The doctor turned around and Park Dong-sik’s mouth twitched.
[“In exchange, get rid of the baby too.”]
[“Erase it, and go live as Park Dong-sik. That’s my condition.”]
“Yes? Are you uncomfortable somewhere?”
He wanted to ask about the surgery, but the words wouldn’t come out of his mouth right then. Furthermore, this was Lee Hee-soo’s regular hospital and Madam Song knew it well, so if word got out wrong, it could cause trouble. If he was going to have the procedure, it would be better to do it at a different hospital.
Park Dong-sik shook his head, saying it was nothing. Then, lying on the bed, a nurse came to roll up his shirt and slightly loosen his belt. Seeing his somewhat tense expression, the doctor smiled.
“Don’t worry too much. It’ll be fine.”
Then he squeezed cold gel onto his stomach. Park Dong-sik grimaced at the unpleasant sensation as the doctor rubbed something that looked like a massage device on his belly.
“There’s a monitor in front. Just look there.”
Park Dong-sik stared at the screen the doctor was pointing to.
Even looking at the screen, he couldn’t distinguish what was what, but among it all, a small black mass caught his eye. The doctor pointed to it with his mouse pointer.
“Fortunately, it’s well-positioned. Can you see it, here?”
That’s the baby? It’s so small….I wonder if it has eyes, nose, and mouth yet…Just then, the doctor tilted his head and brought his face closer to the screen. His expression turned somewhat serious as he pressed slightly on the belly. Is there something wrong?
“Oh…there are two?”
“Two-ri?”
“Haha. Lee Hee-soo, your sense of humor has improved while I haven’t seen you. Two. Twins.”
Park Dong-sik stared stupidly at the doctor’s face, unable to close his mouth, which was hanging open at the moment. He thought it was a joke, but looking carefully at the screen, there did seem to be another dot-like thing.
“There’s quite a difference. In cases like this, one might not make it, but let’s wait and see. It’s too early to say for certain, but there are definitely two on the ultrasound. We’ll see more clearly next time. You’ll be able to hear the heartbeats then too.”
It was unbelievable. I’m pregnant with not one but two babies? Park Dong-sik shook his head with a serious expression on his face.
“That can’t be. There was only one rabbit?”
“Pardon?”
Ignoring the puzzled doctor, Park Dong-sik thought to himself, Twins…Why did it have to be two when we don’t even know who the father is? Then suddenly, lightning struck his brain.
“Doctor.”
“Yes?”
“This is just curiosity, but…is it possible for twins to have different fathers?”
“Different fathers? Why?”
“Well, someone could have sex with two alphas on the same day.”
“That’s usually rare. Unless they’re a terrible scoundrel.”
Ah, he almost grabbed the doctor by the collar and cursed him out.
“I’m just curious….I’m naturally inquisitive.”
“Hmm….It’s not impossible.”
Park Dong-sik brightened.
“Really? Such a thing exists?”
“Maybe one in 10 million. The problem is that it’s less likely than getting struck by lightning and winning the lottery at the same time.”
“But it’s possible.”
“It’s rare.”
“But not impossible, right?”
“It’s practically impossible.”
“But still higher than the chance of dying in an accident and entering someone else’s body?”
At the last question, the doctor’s expression changed strangely.
He moistened his lips once, and after a pause, opened his mouth.
“Are you still taking antidepressants these days?”
The doctor clearly thought Lee Hee-soo was talking nonsense because he’d lost his mind. Feeling it would be pointless to say more, Park Dong-sik got up from his seat. As he was getting down from the bed, another question occurred to him.
“Let me ask just one last thing.”
“Go ahead.”
“Is genetic testing possible before birth?”
“It exists but it’s illegal. And not very accurate. Usually, alpha and omega can confirm through intercourse. During relations, if the father isn’t the biological father, the baby in the womb will show rejection symptoms.”
Park Dong-sik muttered to himself. “Should I try alternating between the two? But Kim Jun-han wouldn’t do it? He’d probably shoot me dead on the spot. Damn, if I get shot and die, all the money and everything goes down the drain.”
The doctor, who had been watching, turned around with a serious expression and quietly wrote something in his chart. Park Dong-sik belatedly stretched his neck and called out to the doctor.
“What are you doing?”
“Haha. Don’t worry about it. Just making a quick note.”
“I’m not mentally ill. Don’t write weird things there.”
“I know. Lee Hee-soo-ssi is perfectly fine. It’s normal to be more sensitive during early pregnancy when you’re physically and mentally tired.”
“You’re not writing that Lee Hee-soo is a crazy mental patient, are you?”
“Absolutely not. And even if there were any illnesses, it’s not something to hide, but something to get treatment for. Especially with mental illness, early intervention is important. These days there are many different approaches besides medication.”
His rambling seemed suspicious. Park Dong-sik strode over and snatched the doctor’s chart out of the other man’s hands. The surprised doctor turned around, and Park Dong-sik glared at the chart with a frown.
“H-Hee-soo-ssi?”
Park Dong-sik handed the chart back to the doctor while grinding his teeth.
“Damn it, it’s all written in English…”
