Chapter 37: Today is the Big Day

Another month passed, and the day Xia Ye was coming back finally arrived. Early in the morning, Han Mingxiu got Xia Li up from bed and started preparing. “We’re here to pick up Dad,” Xia Li, who had been silent up until now, suddenly spoke, clearly displeased. He didn’t like this woman. The last time he visited Han Uncle’s company, she had been there, always clinging to Han Uncle, calling him “brother,” and her scent was awful.

“I’m not joking,” she said, moving closer to Han Mingxiu’s ear and speaking suggestively, “I don’t mind that you’re much older than me.” She added with a smug tone, “I don’t mind that you have an illegitimate child.” Zheng Shuangshuang, as if thinking herself clever and wise, even exuded a sense of pride. “I’m willing to marry you. My father agrees.” The cinnamon scent grew stronger.

Xia Li, overwhelmed by the pungent scent, turned his head away, holding onto Han Mingxiu’s neck, burying his face into his shoulder. Han Mingxiu patted Xia Li’s back, trying to release some scent to soothe him, but since he had already sprayed the barrier agent, there was only a faint smell of cedar.

When Han Mingxiu heard Zheng Shuangshuang mention the words “illegitimate child,” his face turned dark as coal, and his frown deepened. The Zheng family wanted to climb the ranks of the Han family, and Zheng Shihua certainly hoped his daughter, Zheng Shuangshuang, would marry into the family. This Zheng Shuangshuang was another fool overly protected by her family. To speak so carelessly about an “illegitimate child” and “marrying down” in front of the Han family showed her ignorance of her position and worth.

When Zheng Shihua saw his daughter clinging to Han Mingxiu, he rushed over, just in time to hear the last sentence. He broke into a cold sweat. “Xiaoshuang, what are you saying? A girl should be more reserved. You’re making a fool of yourself in front of Young Master Han.”

“Mr. Zheng,” Han Mingxiu nodded politely to Zheng Shihua. As an elder, Han Mingxiu couldn’t be too disrespectful due to his upbringing, but that was the extent of the courtesy. “I have some matters to attend to, so I’ll take my leave.” Without giving the other man a chance to respond, he quickly walked away with Xia Li, leaving behind an increasingly upset Zheng Shihua and the completely clueless Zheng Shuangshuang.

Han Mingxiu made a small detour and walked to the other side of the hall. Xia Li struggled to get down and walk on his own, his face clearly unhappy.

“Xia Li, are you angry?” Han Mingxiu looked at the child and asked. He wasn’t sure if Xia Li had heard Zheng Shuangshuang mention the term “illegitimate child,” nor was he certain if Xia Li understood its meaning.

Xia Li turned his head away unhappily, pouting and refusing to talk to his Han Uncle.

Very well. Han Mingxiu was now very upset. He decided that once they returned, he would retract the proposal that the Zheng family had sent.

Just as Han Mingxiu was trying to calm down Xia Li, the child suddenly pointed toward a crowd ahead and shouted, “Dad…”

Han Mingxiu followed the direction of Xia Li’s finger and, sure enough, saw Xia Ye in the crowd. And, there was also the man who had appeared in his room early this morning.

That man was close behind Xia Ye, now affectionately hooking his arm around Xia Ye’s neck, lazily leaning against him. They were blocked by the people in front, not in a hurry, standing in line while chatting and waiting for the crowd to disperse.

Han Mingxiu saw Xia Ye being held, with his gentle brows and eyes curved in a smile, looking incredibly happy as he smiled at the man.
