In the fishing village of Sojakdo, Hwang Jangyeop is a young fisherman renowned for his skill. He’s a notorious rogue with a sharp tongue, little education, and a reputation for bedding any woman he locks eyes with, yet somehow his reputation isn’t all that bad.

On a cold night, Hwang Jangyeop takes in Yeom Gijeong and his younger brother, who are fleeing their father’s ruthless violence, giving them shelter for the night. From that moment, Gijeong keeps catching his eye, and before long, a budding affection for him begins to grow in Hwang Jangyeop’s heart.

“I’m going to Seoul. It’s the only way to live like a human.”

Meanwhile, Yeom Gijeong dreams of escaping his violent, alcoholic father, his runaway mother, a younger brother who still needs care, and the oppressive shackles of poverty. Through relentless effort, he gains admission to his desired university, but practical obstacles ultimately prevent him from enrolling.

Having lost his life’s goal and living listlessly, Gijeong disappears one day while Hwang Jangyeop is out at a big market in town with Gijeong’s younger brother. Learning of Gijeong’s departure, Hwang Jangyeop spends days sitting at the harbor, waiting for him. In time, he takes on the responsibility of raising the young boy Gijeong left behind.

Seven years later, Gijeong, who swore he’d return, indeed reappears before Hwang Jangyeop…
