    2. To Sehwa.

Calling it a will makes it feel somehow grand, but it’s something I do every day, so I’ve never really attached much meaning to it. I won’t die anyway, and it’s a document that will be discarded in a few days without anyone ever seeing it.

But while I was entering the usual will format, you called me. Behind your voice carefully asking if I had eaten and confirming I was returning on the scheduled date, I could hear Hae-rim and San-ho chattering “When is daddy coming home?” and I felt a little strange.

Since becoming a Major General, I can count on my fingers the times I’ve personally piloted a fighter jet, and this operation too will end with me just sitting at a desk killing time until I receive the results. But if I were to die. If I were gone and only you and the children remained in this world. If the last letter I left you was just a few stiff lines of notification… That thread-thin possibility kept weighing on my mind today, so I’m clumsily writing down what I want to say to you.

You might not remember, but long ago when you were carrying Hae-rim, I handed you a credit card, thinking I was comforting you in your struggles. You staggered up from your seat, hesitated for a long time, then picked up the envelope tucked in the flower basket, stared at the credit card inside for another long while, then slowly bowed your head.

Leaning against the doorframe and stealing glances at you, I was only thinking how pretty your drooping shoulders looked like they were soaked with water, and your pale, forlorn-looking neck. Not knowing that my insensitivity, which couldn’t even be justified by unconsciousness or ignorance, had cast you into hell that day.

What’s even more absurd is that if you hadn’t been overjoyed when you opened the congratulatory card on our wedding anniversary two years ago, I would have lived completely forgetting that such a thing had happened.

You said it was your favorite gift you’d ever received, and you smiled bashfully while reading that utterly blunt text over and over again. Seeing your eyes overflowing with affection for just one letter, I finally remembered how I had made you cry with that empty blank paper that didn’t even have a recipient written on it.

The reason I hugged you tightly that day, pretending to joke around, was because I couldn’t bear to lift my head in front of you. I wanted to ask for forgiveness, but it seemed ridiculous for me to apologize first for something you didn’t even mention, so I ended up saying nothing and letting it pass. But I’ll take this opportunity to say it: I was truly sorry then.

All the things that hurt you when you were young, all those words. I’ve resolved to carry them in my heart for life, but what’s the use of all that? What might be past for me could still be vivid nightmares for you, like yesterday.

And yet, receiving your love, I was able to exist not as a combat machine but as the human Ki Tae-jeong, and I was shamelessly happy.

Looking back, I always wanted to die. I went around everywhere saying my wish was to retire after decorating my uniform with many stars, but I think I actually wanted to die. I was tired of a body that became fine without recovery medicine, bored with the tomorrows I faced, opening my eyes as if nothing happened even after collapsing while bleeding profusely.

But these days, even knowing I’ll be fine soon, I look for treatment first. Physical pain still doesn’t bother me, but I’ve become afraid of dying. The reason is naturally you. Because I love you, Sehwa, so much that I no longer want to die, because I love you so desperately that I can no longer treat lightly even this formal will I’ve written and erased countless times.

As I’ve said repeatedly, I’m confident you’ll never know this document exists, but nonetheless, if I were to die, I hope you won’t cry too much. I hope you’ll grieve moderately and quickly be okay, blooming and smiling like an early spring.

Please tell Hae-rim and San-ho that I loved them very much, and that I’m very sorry.

    I love you.

    I love you, Lee Sehwa.

From your spouse, Lieutenant General Ki Tae-jeong, who is only two steps below the head of state, while you’re a second lieutenant eight ranks below me.

    End.
