Chapter Index

Yan Yuzhou didn’t sleep well the whole night.

His mind was filled with images of Shen Ci being distant and disliking him. When he groggily woke up in the morning, his eyes were somehow already swollen, his throat was painfully dry, and he even found it difficult to speak.

Before leaving his room, he used half a bottle of scent-blocking spray to mask his pheromone scent. Only when he was sure he’d sprayed himself from head to toe did he finally open the door and step out.

He silently finished breakfast. Under Shen Ci’s puzzled gaze, he climbed into the back seat of the car, pressing himself tightly against the door, keeping as much distance from Shen Ci as possible.

Shen Ci was unhappy, yet there was nothing he could do.

He couldn’t demand that the omega he liked had to like him back. Besides, they only had a nominal relationship without any real connection.

He could only secretly hope that when Yan Yuzhou’s next heat cycle came, he’d have the chance to get close to this lovely, fragrant person again.

However, before the next heat cycle even arrived, that very evening, Yan Yuzhou didn’t come home.

    Over the phone, he said:

“Mr. Shen, Xiao Mu got drunk, so I’ll stay at the dorm to take care of him and won’t be coming home tonight.”

Fine. Not coming home. He’s learning fast.

Inside the dorm shared by Yan Yuzhou and Xiao Mu, the air was thick with the smell of alcohol. It wasn’t the grape-scented pheromones from Xiao Mu, but rather the actual stench of him being dead drunk.

“Zhou Zhou,” Xiao Mu burped, his eyes hazy, gazing at the double-visioned Yan Yuzhou before him, and giggled, “I’m so envious of you and President Shen.”

Yan Yuzhou looked at Xiao Mu’s clearly heartbroken expression and roughly guessed that he must have hit a wall with Han Yun, which was why he’d gotten himself drunk to such a miserable state.

“Alright, things aren’t as great between Mr. Shen and me as you think.” Yan Yuzhou reached out and took the wine glass from Xiao Mu’s hand, stopping him from drinking any more.

However, as soon as Xiao Mu saw his glass taken away, he simply grabbed the wine bottle nearby and tilted his head back, drinking straight from it with an air of “I won’t stop until I drink myself to death.”

Frightened, Yan Yuzhou hurriedly snatched the bottle from him as well.

“After the wine bottle was snatched away, Xiao Mu froze for a moment, then, as if feeling extremely wronged, buried his face on the table, his shoulders trembling as he started to sob.”

Yan Yuzhou placed the wine bottle to the side, pulled out a few tissues for Xiao Mu, set them by his hand, and used his other hand to pat Xiao Mu’s back, gently comforting him with each pat.

Once Xiao Mu had cried enough, he lifted his tear-streaked face, gave Yan Yuzhou an embarrassed “thank you,” took the tissues, and began to blow his nose.

“Zhou Zhou, I’m fine,” maybe because he’d had a good cry and vented his emotions, Xiao Mu’s expression finally eased a bit, his tone also relaxing a lot. He shrugged and continued explaining, “I just failed at confessing, that’s all, no big deal. Sneaking into his room and stripping to seduce him was my mistake. Him yelling at me and throwing me out was what I deserved. At first, I thought he’d go for that unspoken-rule type of thing, but maybe he just doesn’t like me enough. Maybe it’s just that my hips aren’t wide enough and I’m not good breeding stock—hahahahaha…”

Even as he laughed, Xiao Mu’s eyes became teary again.

Listening to Xiao Mu’s words, Yan Yuzhou’s mouth slowly fell open, and he was utterly shocked.

Was Xiao Mu really willing to go to such lengths for the person he loved? Even willing to be subjected to Han Yun’s “unspoken rules”? Yet his sponsor had firmly rejected him?

Yan Yuzhou blinked a few times, took a moment to process it all, then calmed himself down and comforted Xiao Mu. Only when he was sure Xiao Mu wouldn’t start crying again did they both wash up quickly, turn off the lights, and go to bed.

The room was still thick with the lingering scent of alcohol, filling Yan Yuzhou’s nose and making his mind feel slightly fuzzy and tipsy.

He thought of Shen Ci. Perhaps, in a villa without his pheromones, Shen Ci would be more at ease. Gently pressing his hand to his chest, he felt a faint pain there, but he forced himself to ignore it, repeatedly reminding himself, “For Shen Ci’s sake, this is what you should do.”

In the days that followed, he found every excuse he could to avoid returning to the villa. Eventually, he simply called Sister Song and asked her to pass on his message to Mr. Shen.

After several days, even though he was convinced that what he was doing was right, there was still a certain place in his heart that felt empty.

Until one day, Shen Ci appeared directly beneath his dorm building.

On the last day of military training, after the inspection concluded and with nothing else to do, at midday, Yan Yuzhou finished lunch in the cafeteria and was walking back to his dorm. When he arrived downstairs, he saw that blindingly flashy Rolls Royce.

Even though he couldn’t see inside the car, Yan Yuzhou could just sense that Shen Ci was sitting in the back seat, staring at him.

With his heart trembling, he walked over and opened the car door under the ambiguous gazes of the dorm supervisor and several passing students. Yan Yuzhou feigned calm as he got into the car, thinking that since it was midday and he might be sweating, his glands could easily start secreting pheromones. He bit his lip and silently rolled down the car window.

This way, maybe Shen Ci would feel a bit more comfortable.

Unexpectedly, what greeted him was a pair of eyes filled with displeasure and disappointment.

“Yan Yuzhou, what exactly do you think you’re doing?” Shen Ci’s voice was like a sheet of ice, making Yan Yuzhou shiver uncomfortably even in the scorching heat.

Omega rejection syndrome was, after all, Shen Ci’s personal matter. Yan Yuzhou thought, “I can’t just honestly say, ‘I know you have this condition, so I feel for you and want to make things less painful for you,’” right? So, after a brief moment of consideration, he carefully replied, “School is about to officially start, and I’ll have classes every day. I thought that living in the dorm would be more convenient. This way, you also won’t need to have Xiao Wang drive me back and forth every day.”

Shen Ci’s expression changed. Perhaps the words “moving into the dorm” had truly provoked him; his throat felt as if a ball of fire was burning painfully. For a moment, looking into Yan Yuzhou’s indifferent, impassive eyes, he felt a sense of powerlessness from the inside out.

It seemed this omega wanted to stay far, far away from him.

Shen Ci felt a deep sense of self-mockery in his heart. Shen Ci, oh Shen Ci, what good is it to have cured your illness? What good is it to have a 100% compatibility rate? In the end, to him, you’re just a free suppressant for his heat cycles to play with. Any other time, he’d probably rather pretend he doesn’t know you.

Even so, he couldn’t quite accept it. Within a few seconds, his voice turned hoarse and dry as he spoke, his gaze filled with wounds. “Do as you like. But today, Grandfather asked us to come home.”

Yan Yuzhou’s lips moved slightly, a pang of discomfort rising in his heart. So, it’s that time again when Shen Ci has to endure all kinds of discomfort just to put on a show of affection with me?

With a pale face, he suppressed his heartache, nodded, and forced a dry smile. “Alright, then I’ll go upstairs and change clothes before coming back down.”

After getting out of Shen Ci’s car, Yan Yuzhou’s steps were unsteady as he returned to his dorm room. He took off the clothes he was wearing and changed into something clean and fresh. Then, he picked up the scent blocker on the table and sprayed himself from head to toe for a full minute.

When he got back in the car, he noticed that, at some point, the window had already been rolled up again. Yan Yuzhou figured he’d sprayed enough scent blocker that it wouldn’t bother Shen Ci, so he didn’t roll the window back down.

Up front, Xiao Wang, the driver, focused on driving while the two people in the backseat sat lost in their own thoughts. Yan Yuzhou simply stared out the window, as if no one in the car mattered to him.

Suddenly, Shen Ci spoke. “Zhou Zhou.”

The moment he was addressed so intimately, Yan Yuzhou’s eyes instantly filled with hot tears.
